I must say I don`t really get some of the ineracts and their relation to the piece.. ? I really enjoyed reading the story. I like the metaphors you`ve chosen; the icy winter reflecting the inner world of the protagonist; the chilly sense of loss and lonliness juxtuposed to the supposed warm hearted merry season. Good job..

Note: most electric blanket manufacturers strongly recommend not falling asleep while it is on, for safety reasons.

Man Found Frozen in Snow Bank -- you did not wish it was your ex husband -- or did you? -- while rubbing your cold feet against the old electric blanket?
you write very well -- very compelling.

The title and the teaser misled me into thinking this was a bleeding-heart, take-care-of-your-local-panhandler-or-feel-guilty sob story! (So much for my guessing powers!)
It is simply a sad story but it is very heartfelt and is very sensitively written! Breakup of a relationship is sad any time but hurts particularly bad during what for the rest of humanity represents the season of happiness and for some merely the season of loneliness!
Usually the wife is always the last one to know. But the reality is as you seem to have hinted here the reason the wife is the last one to know is she usually overlooks, on purpose, the signs of trouble. Most females are much more emotionally invested in relationships than the males statistically speaking (and clearly there are exceptions), so most wives then try their level best to protect whatever semblance of the relationship remains, and to not face the reality so the structural weaknesses which might be present, and are responsible for her predicament, tend to get ignored on purpose.
Such structural weaknesses are usually present well before the relationship gets formalized. It is rather sad the way most women try to rationalize with thoughts such as he fell under a spell. as if the man did what he did under anything other than his own volition. If the roles were reversed few men would try to make apologies for the woman they would simply say what a hussy! and move on.
There is no way to control another human being, period and to make them into something that WE wish them to be. And all living together represents a compromise because all living which involves breathing IS compromise and the only thing one controls and CAN control is what one can pour out.
And sometimes even that is not fully controllable. :)
Besides, all men are creeps! :(
Wait a minute. That did not come out quite right!
