dost-mittar #130: ``I hope that you would agree that museums are the repository of the cultural/hisorical/civilisational heritage of a people..``
...i actually don`t believe that museums are such repositories....museums, even in advanced countries, contain a microscopic fraction of information about the various cultures and histories of civilizations....first of all, it is difficult to collect that information...secondly, it is difficult to maintain it in museum....civilizations can be spread across thousands of miles and social domains....museums are barely a few rooms...
....i just completed a tour of french musuems...downtown paris is filled with them....however, even the great Louvre and D`orsee contain but a tiny fraction of historical classics of paris, much less france and what to talk of europe....
...a better criteria in my opinion are books and writings....also where literacy is low, i would suggest songs and stories and dances and cultural customs.....clothes and food etc....these record and define a civilization in amounts thosands of fold more detail than any museum could...you are not going to learn much about the culture of punjab (or even taxila) by touring that museum...you will learn about it by touring the town and meeting the people and listening to their stories and reading the writers of the area.....
.....i would have to say, language is the best and most difficult and detailed defintion of a civilization......it takes a very very long time for a language to develop....it defines a civilization developing in an area, independent and isolated from its surroundings.....it is in langauge that people of civilizations communicate, dance, sing, tell stories, write their history, understand their religions etc.....
....and south asia, like europe, has so many langauges, each defining a historical civilization which brought those languages into existence....do keep in mind, singular civilizations will always move towards one method of communication and language and not towards multiple methods......if india was a historical civilization, its communities wouldn`t have chosen the difficulties and complexities of defining tens of languages.....they would settle on one......
...musuems are nothing but an after-thought created by tourism departments........
``...how can it be distinct from West Bengal, anyway?``
this is correct......bangladesh is actually half of a complete civilization...the other half being bengal in india......much like west punjab is half of a civilization, the other halves being in india (and in pakistan`s portion of kashmir, which though geographically in kashmir, from a civilizational point of view is in punjab)......

``...what you are refering to is an abstraction of this term....in that sense, all of us are a part of a human civilization.....however, country does not equal civilzation..... ``
Let`s move from the abstract to the concrete. I hope that you would agree that museums are the repository of the cultural/hisorical/civilisational heritage of a people (please note that I am using the word `people`, not any geographical boundaries). Now, I will invite you to go and visit the museums in Peshawar, Taxila, Lahore, Delhi, Calcutta, Bombay and Chennai. You will at once notice the similarities of the statues, ornaments and jewelleries displayed in these cities in the North, South, West and East of the subcontinent. I can say this with some authority because I have visited all but one of these and have read about the one that I have not visited. I have also visited the Dhaka Museum and, notwithstanding your claims about Bangladesh being a distinct civilization (how can it be distinct from West Bengal, anyway?), the artifacts displayed there are no different from those in the other museums.
So, my friend, the people for whom maintaining civilizational heritage is a profession also believe in this `mythical` subcontinental civilization, which, for better or worse, is generally known as Indian civilization.

Dude - entire brit land is already converted into curry... it seems goras can`t down their beers without a plate of chicken tikka with heengu allover it.... and here you are, trying to be more loyal than the king, waxing eloquence on salmon stuffed with crab...
don`t get me wrong - I enjoy salmon stuffed with wahtever, but even if we don`t like it - curry is slowly taking over... smell of hingu is all over the place... and let`s face it - without hingu, there won`t be no grandpa gopinath, and therefore no hamidm... hingu is what made you... and now that hingu is taking over the world, why are you cringing?... take pride in it...
don`t wallow in self-pity, hingu is what made you, hingu will set you free... to paraphrase RSS slogan: ``garv se kaho, hum hingu hein``:)

dharma, Genius Number 765, 875, 987.001 from India #123 Read this that I wrote in #64: but these religious rituals (hindu/muslim) seem a bit too convenient substitute for the more important things I think (i.e. cheat the customer, burn the bride, attack the minority, then go dip in the ganga, or toss pebbles at the devil and promise ``never again`` and God will wash away your sins.. Then repeat the process again the following year and become a ``double haji`` or a ``double guru`` or something.
Now repeat what you wrote in #123 below. And add ``cant read either`` to your other qualifications (lying etc.). Now, you can go to hell. :-)

Things would be better if they just learned to clean up after they cook the food. They never open windows after cooking that dog doo, never air out the house or even close the bedroom doors or the dress closets while cooking the food. The result is the stink present in every haldi milk drinker. It is not only in what they wear but also in cars and everything else they touch. Have you noticed even chowk smells so gross after so many of these guys visit this place?
You go to any Chinatown and in Hong kong, strong Chinese food smell is every where but you will never find a Chinese stinking up the whole theater or the office by his/her mere presence.
In this God`s country, water is an easily available natural resource. Unlike India, it is also delivered via tap but dog dooers just hate to use it for more than once in a year and that too in a pail....
Some civilization....

swarrier,
Out of respect for you I read the article but I guess you never read it or how could you possibly missed this:
``The FAQ section suggests that cancer patients gradually work up to a daily dose of eight grams a day, some 40 times the amount consumed in the average Indian diet. Most pharmaceuticals, in contrast, are meted out in milligrams. At one point, the Web site had even asserted: ``By the end of eight weeks, a significant improvement is expected.`` Asked whether he was worried that any side effects might emerge at a dosage of eight grams, Aggarwal said that small clinical trials at other institutions have dosed up to 12 grams and that patients would have notified him if any untoward effects had occurred with the dosage recommended by M. D. Anderson. The researcher, who takes a curcumin pill every day, shuns the caution typical of investigators before well-controlled, large-scale clinical trials have been conducted. ``People take a lot of other supplements, and I don`t think you need anything else if you`re taking this,`` Aggarwal says.
Now answer one more question. If the spices were so good, then average age in India, china or whosoever uses these gross spices would have been 150 years. One look at 90% Indians can tell you that they suffer from multiple diseases...the reality is that India has the most number of diseases present in the whole world...Indians even beat Sub Sahara nations in that regard.
Ever wonder why 90% of viruses originate from China?

hp,
........... i don`t know about other aspects of indian (and paki) civilization, but the food is so bad that it has to be overpowered with all kinds of spices ........... and with a few exceptions it looks like a pile of god doo gone bad .......... regardless of what it is - aaloo keema, chicken makhani, chicken biryani, aaloo ghost, palak paneer, kofta, dosa, idlee, sambar, aaloo aaloo - it all tastes the same ......... unfortunately the spices seem to be addictive and after 3 or 4 days of eating civilized food like chateaubriand and salmon stuffed with crab and asparagus, one begins to crave for the foul smelling haldi, ginger and garlic goop .............. the only saving grace for us pakis is that we don`t use heeng and consequently don`t smell as bad as the average hindoo ...........
