Thanks kedarnathji
In fact, in 1956, perhaps India or a few more third world country held the Soviet Union in some awe; the western block did not care very much about the soviet position on different international issues. To make the narrative complete, the Soviet Union of 1956 was more or less Iran of today with nukes. A good straw man to help the Western geopolitical interests and a nuisance to keep around for keeping some chicken hawks in line…..
Afa bihari idiot is concerned..I am not going to rub it in. He will just eat his own sh1t....
For sophomoric historical info, here is a good place to start
http://www.spartacus.schoolnet.co.uk/COLDsuez.htm
Margaret Thatcher, The Path of Power (1995)
“As I came to know more about it, I drew four lessons from this sad episode. First, we should not get into a military operation unless we were determined and able to finish it. Second, we should never again find ourselves on the opposite side to the United States in a major international crisis affecting Britain`s interests. Third, we should ensure that our actions were in accord with international law. And finally, he who hesitates is lost.”
Thanks kedarnathji

Indian foreign policy was based on the following perspctives.
1. Historical persective based on the Great Bharat Versha that included the entire subcontinent less South India. Both Ghandi and Nehru felt that India had a magnificient past and at the right time India could reclaim it.
2. International Balance of Power in which Nehru always emerged as a Socialist and more biased towards USSR. Because he did not want to be labelled as SURKHA, he called this policy of political economy as Fabian Socialism.
3. A strong defence capable of metting punishment to small neighbours [Tellis] and absorbing independant states.
4. Pakistan; that challenged India in multiple ways viz a viz extreme ideological positions, likelihood of Indian Muslims supporting Pakistan, likelihood of Pakistan falling back to India within the first few years.
5. The Historic Predisposition of threat from the North.
To meets these ends of policy the following myths were created.
1. Peaceful Coexistance. Though many indians will have to explain how it can be explained in annexation of states like Goa in 1963.
2. Non interference. Though many indians will have to explain how it can be explained in annexation of states and quarantine of Pakistan when Pakistan tried to develope alternate ports to Calcutta in East Pakistan.
3. Non Alignment

#32 Kedarnath
Ama Kedarnath,
With all due respect, there is not a single fact in that link you provide that contradicts a single fact in #31.
The Suez crisis ended in essentially a humiliating retreat by the French & British and especially by the Prime Minister Eden. The British sources like the one you quote are certainly not the most candid, reliable or objective on what caused them to back down.
Of course, they would claim it was out of consideration for the Americans!
Need I remind you sir, the Britons were well aware of the US opposition BEFORE they hatched this plan – but went ahead anyway. Why do you think they kept it a secret from the US in the first place?!!
[…Jews were still a second-class minority in those days…]
This paragraph of yours indicates your failure to understand #31. Yes, of course, there was very serious discrimination against the Jewish folks in the US back in those days. It was precisely BECAUSE of that discrimination that somebody (even a Presidential candidate) would consider it a political liability to be taking “their” side in a war in which “they” were the aggressors – hence Eisenhauer’s extra angst at the war beginning exactly a week before the date of the election!
Those who have further interest in this topic should check out the book entitled Khrushchev’s Cold War by Alensandr Fursenko and Timothy Naftali, published 2006.

Ama yaar, don`t cry. Your reference is indeed sophomoric. Read the book I listed earlier for the benefit of Kedarnath.

[...Both Ghandi and Nehru ...]
dude, who the heck is ``Ghandi``?... you are consistently misspelling the simple name ``Gandhi``... is that intentional?

Abey saaley, Teri bizli bhi gul ho gai hai kya?!!
Let us see if the moron HP has even read that book I listed, or whether the hot-pecker is limited to his sophomoric sources only!

I have completed my quota of ``dirty words`` for the day. I got to go to bed now.
Good night everybody.
Except HP.
Read the book, HP!
And CVS has a sale on facial tissues that you will need to wipe all those tears of humiliation!

The most important part that you missed:
Indian foreign policy was designed and still fighting to thwart the long held British and American policy to maintain Pakistan as ``a check on Indian potential ``.
Obviously, most of the Indian foreign policy stalwarts (some here too) had no Idea what the Indian potential was.
Indian potential was something first the Brits, and now the American keep as a major secret......
Here is a money quote from potential_null the Idiot Indian foreign policy guru.
“Act as a check on India’s potential” conspiracy theory in a nutshell….
“Pakistan (in the form of a separate nation in its current position, always balancing against India rather than bandwagoning with India) was seen as necessary for the protection of British interests. Subsequently the Americans have taken over the hand the British were playing.
From the Anglo-American perspective, Pakistan’s major utility is to act as a check on India’s potential and an instrument for modulating India`s actions. ``
Hehehehe…..

[..they just pay lip service to various things and then screw you pakis in the a$$... you know that by heart - don`t you... :)...]
Mohar yaar, it is just amazing to see how much jealousy and envy the pakis have towards India. Each of the paki posters whether it is ali1, bulleya, urstruly etc are insanely envious of India`s superior position in the subcontinent. They can see the formidable economic and military strength and the genuine recognition of India by the west (e.g. the civilian nuclear deal). They just cannot stomach it. One of them rants about India not being a civilzation (go figure!!), the other talks about aloo-gobhi and what not!! Its pathetic.

urstruly HP BJK everyone is missing the point here.
MAJinnah is the one we should give credit to for the foreign policies followed by India and Pakistan. His agile and nimble mind forsaw the events happening today, and created a niche for the nation (re:Urstruly interact #2).
Nehru gandhi etc just followed in his wake................
wake up and smell the kaafee people

Urghhhh
Dude - watch some sports, adopt a son, go on a hunting trip... do something, you are killing us here with your effiminate observations... :)
