Pakistan gunships pound Taliban, Al-Qaeda amid US pressure

MIRANSHAH, Pakistan (AFP) - Helicopter gunships pounded militant hideouts in northern Pakistan as the military scoured mountainous areas on Friday for 16 missing soldiers believed kidnapped by Taliban rebels.

As the United States called for greater efforts against militants using Pakistan's remote Hindu Kush mountains as a base, the military said at least 10 Al-Qaeda and Taliban fighters were killed in the air attack on Thursday.

The operation also involved ground forces in the restive North Waziristan region near the Afghan border, where military strikes on militants, suspected of launching attacks, have taken place all week.

"The miscreants killed in Thursday's strike were local militants allied to Taliban and Al-Qaeda," a security official told AFP.

Military spokesman Major General Waheed Arshad said security forces were focused on squeezing out the militants, who have both local and foreign fighters among their ranks.

"There is no planned operation going on in North Waziristan but we are responding with greater force against militant attacks on security forces now," Arshad said.

Arshad said the military was hunting for 16 paramilitary soldiers who went missing early Thursday in South Waziristan.

But Arshad said the stepped-up action in the border areas was not in reaction to pressure from Washington.

"The action is not being done under any outside pressure," Arshad said(HAHAHAHA...stop it arshad....you're killing me here....HAHA...). "We know Al-Qaeda is present in the region, there are Taliban elements and their local supporters and we are acting against them in our own national interest.

In a separate incident Friday, helicopter gunships bombed a suspected militant hideout at Boya, west of Miranshah, the main town in North Waziristan, but there were no immediate reports of casualties, a local security official said.

US is stuck up badly between the Democrats and Republicians sharing powers apart from the upcomming nominations and elections domestically. In all this the New US Vision seems to me comming from a blind man.
US Stategy (Bush's,NeoCons,Hawks) stategy is now to somehow involve Al-Queda in Iraq - so they are comming up with a new term 'New-AlQueda' . They know Al-Queda works for American Public and they are somehow hyping it up.
Statements from Homeland Security Adv. and others are part of the stategy to bring Al-Queda inthe fore front. I call it a American Bluff and nothing more!

There's delusional and there's paki delusional...

In pakiworld, the imaginary parallel universe where paki delusions are reality, India has 22 wars and Pakiland only has a minor skirmish with miscreants(as the paki government calls them)..

in reality, the "miscreants" killed more than 200 paki soldiers in the last 2 weeks, the paki army is using artillery and helicopter gunships against the miscreants, and the paki army used white phosphorus to kill a thousand school girls(who, presumably, were miscreating)

India is a democracy, yet there are 22 simultaneous wars of attrition being fought with the center.

Can u write down 11 of those here?

US played role in decision reversal

WASHINGTON, Aug 9: The United States played a key role in steering President Pervez Musharraf away from declaring a state of emergency in Pakistan and the acknowledgement of this role came from no less a person than President George W. Bush himself who urged the Pakistani leader to focus on free and fair elections in his country.

“My focus in terms of the domestic scene there is that they have a free and fair election, and that's what we've been talking to him about and hopeful they will,” Mr Bush said at a White House news conference.

Meanwhile, the US State Department confirmed that Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice had telephoned President Musharraf and discussed Pakistan’s internal political situation.

“They talked about the ongoing political developments in Pakistan. They had a good conversation,” State Department spokesman Sean McCormack said.

Diplomatic sources told Dawn that Ms Rice made two telephone calls; the first at 5 p.m. Washington time on Wednesday and the second on Thursday morning. Her conversation with President Musharraf focussed on the possible declaration of a state of emergency in Pakistan and the general’s refusal to attend a tribal jirga in Kabul, the sources said.

When asked if Ms Rice’s telephone call had influenced Gen Musharraf not to declare a state of emergency, Mr McCormack said: “I'll leave it to Pakistani officials to describe President Musharraf's thinking and how that thinking may have evolved.”

The spokesman said the US has an interest in a Pakistan “that is on the pathway to greater economic openness and freedom and reform, greater political openness and freedom.”

When informed that a Pakistani minister had confirmed, in an interview to a private television channel, that President Musharraf intends to declare a state of emergency, Mr McCormack said the minister had since “revised and extended his comments to say that there is no plan at this point to impose a state of emergency.”

At the White House, Mr Bush said he had seen media reports about an “emergency declaration” but he had “seen no evidence that he (President Musharraf) has made that decision.”

Mr Bush also indicated that the question of a possible US military strike at Al Qaeda targets inside Pakistan came up for discussion when he telephoned President Musharraf on Aug 4.

“I have indicated to him that the American people would expect there to be swift action taken if there's actionable intelligence on high-value targets inside his country,” he said.

This statement signals a softening of attitude in Washington this issue which lately strained relations between the US and Pakistan.(softening attitude? huh? this is like finish your peas and don't make me say that again..)

In earlier statements, senior US officials had clearly said that if they had “actionable intelligence” about the presence of Al Qaeda leaders inside Pakistan’s tribal territory, they will launch direct military strikes at those targets instead of waiting for Islamabad’s permission to do so.

“Now, I recognize Pakistan is a sovereign nation, and that's important for Americans to recognize that,” he said. “But it's also important for Americans to understand that he (Gen Musharraf) shares the same concern about radicals and extremists as I do and as the American people do.”(peas are good for you so just shut up and eat them up..they're good because I say so...)

Mr Bush said that when he spoke with the Pakistani leader, he reminded him that “we share a common enemy,” extremists and radicals who would like to harm both the US and Pakistan.

“In his case, they would like to kill him, and they've tried,” Mr Bush added. “I have made it clear to him that I would expect there to be full cooperation in sharing intelligence, and I believe we've got good intelligence sharing,”

Masadi is good in sense he has understood the dilectics of usa politics. As he has proved many times politics nothing but concentrated economics. He is not liked by people as he goes to the source and for that you have to travel against currents and people feel to resist current is wrong. American politicians are turning the screws on Pakistan because their politicians have finally (and rightly) come to the conclusion that democracy is the only elixir to extremism. This recent amendment (Pressler-II) is a manifestation of America's new 'tough love' policy on Pakistan.

How can such tripe make it to the Front Page of Chowk ?. Farzana Varsey could burp and produce more substance than this extreme exercise in insulting our common sense.

India is a democracy, yet there are 22 simultaneous wars of attrition being fought with the center. Bigotry and extremism is not only a tradition, but is institutionalized and enshrined in it's religion.

US has a long and proud tradition of dictating the sort of democracies that the third world can enjoy. Millions of people have died trying to resist US puppet regimes. Palestinians voted for Hamas, but with carrot and stick, they are now being taught to make the 'right' choice.

Pakistan, india and whoever else can have clowns for presidents and a Paper/Rock/Scissor system of govt --as long as we continue to serve US interests in that region. Simple as that. Violation of human rights, democracy and proliferation of weapons are just tools for the State Dept. to use under the 'stick' part of the equation.

The answer is to circle the wagons and stand as one, united against the imperial designs. Don't do it out of fear of reprisals. Do it as a matter of principle. The bully shall be vanquished.

Pakistani leadership need to convey to usa its minimum demands for our help .Without our help sprecially as a supply line from karchi to A.Stan and oil food and all logistic support is pakistani. All oil comes from Pakistani refineries to fuel war machines. All pakistani driver keep supply and fuel and armament in ready position for use by american and allied forces. American airmachines are flying from pakistani bases and Pakistan is taking all blame for colateral damages done by american pilot airmachines firing blindly missiles.
We need to give understanding to usa status quo is not good and can become worst so following minimum things need to be done.
1. Force A.stan govt to formalize "DurandLine" as international border with watertight treaty.
2. America should put pressure on indian rulers that all aid to India will come to stop unless proper acceptable solution to pakistan is not arrived.
3. Give trarrif preference for pakistani textile product to combat extremisim.
4. Either cancell treaty of Nuclear plants with India or give same stuff for pakistan.
5. Do not offer f-16 type weapons to India and withdraw pakistan specific measures for checking Pakistani progress on fight against terrorism and delink all help from all conditions as creates backlash against american support by govt of Pakistan.
6. Give equal weightage to both countries for consideration stop partial behavior to neighbour to east and west.
7. Get our economy decoupled from usa as they treat us as slave and like beggar get attached to better rising sun economic locomotive of china economy.
8.USA needs to sign free trade agreement like China.
When we are making all concessions even at cost of future problems it reasonable to ask to usa to fist deliver or war against terror ( which is war against Muslims) will come to halt. It should not be threat but we should be ready to face hardships ( money wise) so will not get embroiled in fatricide like Iraq where believers are destroying each other .

ISLAMABAD: The treasury and opposition members in National Assembly (NA) Wednesday have made it clear on US that one billion Muslims will turn into suicide bombers if the holiest places of Makkah and Madina are attacked and warned Vetican City will not remain secure if any such threat is materialized.

They said this unanimously while participating in debate on foreign policy. Opposition legislator Ghulam Murtaza Satti said US was pursuing double standards. Those talking of launching any military offensive against Makkah and Medina are accursed. This will not happen nor will we allow it to happen.

Treasury member Rozina Tufail said Benazir Bhutto was striking deal with government and was seeking guarantee from US. If US presidential candidates are giving offensive statements then our candidates can also say that Vetican be attacked during the election campaign in the upcoming elections ", she added.

JUI-S legislator Hamid ul Haqqani said Muslim Ummah was facing the situation the sketch of which was presented by the last prophet Hazrat Muhammad (PBUH) 1400 years back.

Pakistan-US Policies
Treasury and opposition parliamentarians Wednesday kept on their criticism at the American attack threats to Pakistan and also remarks from an American Presidential hopeful to attack the Holy Cities.

The National Assembly, Lower House, continued debate on the anti-Pakistan statements from the U.S presidential candidates, and the several members asked the government to quit the US-led coalition.

The lawmakers said there is no need to be afraid of the U.S as its boat is now "sinking".

They also criticized the U.S aid to Pakistan which has been linked to its performance against terrorists.

Maulana Hamid-ul-Haq Haqqani of Jamiat Ulema-e-Islam said the U.S is creating unrest in this region to serve its interests.

He said a conspiracy is being hatched against the country and due to President Musharraf's policies the entire nation has been suffering.

"We are shedding blood of our own people by branding them as terrorists, which is regrettable".

He underlined the need of dissociating Pakistan from international alliance against terrorism.

The ruling party member Ejaz Ahmad Chaudhry said that the U.S destroys the country it befriends."The fate of Shah of Iran and Saddam Hussain is a lesson for others".

He said the U.S has been badly defeated in Iraq as it was defeated in Vietnam."The US presidential candidates who are issuing irresponsible statement against Muslim holy places should be declared in-competent for the post".

MNA warned that no Muslim can tolerate attack on Muslim holy places of Makkah and Madina.

He called for handing over power to democratic forces.

Maulana Fazal-e-Subhan of Mutahida Majlis-e-Amal (MMA) said that operation in Tribal Areas against the local people and in Lal Masjid were carried out to appease the United States and the government has made unsafe country's western borders due to its wrong policies.

He said in result of these wrong policies a gap has been made between the people and the army and Pakistan has gone into isolation.

Qari Gul Rehman of MMA stressed the need to improve relations with neighbouring countries and called for convening joint session of the both House to formulate a foreign police that could protect Pakistan's interests.

Dr. Farida Ahmed of MMA criticised the foreign policy and said due to the weaknesses Pakistan is facing threats.

She urged to convene a conference of the Islamic countries to devise a common strategy to safeguard the interests of Muslims and holy places.

Dr. Farid Ahmed Piracha of Jamaat-e-Islami emphasized the need to strengthen Pakistani relations with the Muslim, Asian and African countries and adopt policies that could help promote peace at international level.

He said the parliament has never been taken into confidence by framing foreign policies that is being run by a single person and it only aims to protect American interests that need to be revised.

Maulana Muhammad Khan Sheerani of MMA in his speech proposed revision of ties with the United States and said it is working to promote its own agenda as the International Court of Justice in 1986 had declared America as the only terrorist State when it ruined Nicaragua.

He emphasized the need to make Pakistan more active in the regional cooperation organizations and work for promotion of peace.

However, it is perhaps time for Pakistanis to tell the Americans that if they are really serious about making progress then they need to understand and do more.
