This is what our heroes have bequeathed us in 60 years. Yet we continue to worship them, and nobody ever criticises them for their role. If history remains static, how can we create new ideas and thoughts? There is need to assess the very foundation of this country and make an attempt to develop a new basis on which to build our destiny. If we continue with the same old hackneyed ideas, it would be disastrous to say the least.

There is no doubt that myths guide a nation. It is the myth of Gandhi that makes ex-president Kalaam an eternal india hero, who left the presidential palace with two suitcases in hand.

It is the myth of the gaznavi who stole from the somanath temple a pak hero that makes Benazir who has billions in swiss banks a pak hero waiting for her return, so is Nawaz who was exiled with 50 suit cases of personnel belongings apert from the billions in banks.

Port-of-Spain: A book on Mahatma Gandhi by a Trinidadian has raised a new debate on the relevance of Gandhian philosophy in the 21st century.

Darryl Naranjit's "Truth and Power: Gandhi's Political Philosophy" gives a cogent analysis of the political, economic, social and spiritual strategies of Gandhi in his quest for equality for the Blacks and Indians in South Africa. It also studies Gandhi's struggle in India and how he helped to dismantle the British empire.

In the introduction to the book, published by Just World Publications, Naranjit says: "Underneath the simple words and phrases (of Gandhi) that appear almost as platitudes, there is a meaning, a philosophy that challenges modern Western Thought at its core. This book is written as an attempt to uncover the meanings hidden in those simple words and phrases."

The above item indicates the universal and timeless relevance of Gandhi to the world.

There are people. bigoted people all over teh world in praise of gandhi. It does not mean that relevance of jinnah has declined. and I quote

Use the correct terminology, it is not self talk, it is called internal dialogue, and it goes on all the time. When the mind is silent, that is what teh meditations are all about, one is in communion with the soul. When the internal dialogue is loud and others can hear, they are called nutters, but for all others the internal dialogue goes on and that is what continously validates our view of teh world. When that changes, the person changes.

It is true that this process is valid at a collective level also, especially in the economic field, and a lot of the IT success of india is due to the hype created. There is nothing wrong with it, it is the cultural symbols and myths that drive mankind.

All the paki bashing that goes on teh chowk is primarily intended to sink any sane pakistani into despair. The pak news papers are also doing a good job, with abolutely no positive news items.

This is brilliant. One always suspects that a nation's psychology is so very much like an individual person's own psychology but to label a nation's public discourse as its self talk is a masterstroke. Opens so many avenues of thinking!
