Well as much as I despise Muchharraf of the analphile sect, I must say that the vakeel and hence the ragtag opposition and the hapless avaam must accept the SC decision as grudgingly as Muchharraf & co. did in July.

If the opposition has enough moral capital invested in the hearts of the populace then they need not even have to "organisez" or ask the avaam for an uprising. It is always spontaneous and the leader is lead by the people at his/her back & not according to his/her dictates.

If anyone in Pakistan truly represent the sentiments & the ethos of Pakistan ..it is the chaudhry bradraan.Like the Syed Braadraan of the mughal times, these king makers have political savvy and acumen which would put a Chanakyaa to shame. Same with Sheikh Rashid, and Maulana Faz-ur-Rehman..the ability of Muchharraf to retain them and squeeze all their talent for whatever is their worth speaks volumes of his own devious mind as well.

It is time that the "opposition" now let the events take its course. Muchharraf will stay as President as long as Bush is
in the white-house. Just review the "election" of our "leaders" & pay special attention to the month & even the date when they assumed office. That would be an eye-opener itself. If democrats do not win, BB and PP stand no chance in nov. 2008 as well.

What most of us do not realize that Pakistan & Muslim lands are the new chessboards on which the Democrats & Republicans play their pastime games.Now that Latin America is now free of their great-game psyche. It has nothing whatsoever to do with either ideologies or economics anymore.

....i still fully and whole-heartedly support imran khan....true support is when one supports someone, when they are not popular......and i have supported imran khan, when he is still down and out......would take him over any of the political bozos, any day.......

p.s. he is not a family friend.....i have only met him once or twice.....a couple of people in ppp are........if you do a google on, "romair" "imran" "family friend," as you are prone to do (or if you ask arjun to do it for you), you will find the following:

benazir forced to make a deal, with musharraf, on his terms...i.e. he puts the corruption cases against her in cold storage (but does not drop them), like he has done with chaudhries, so he can keep her on a leash.....he does not agree to dropping the three time prime minister rule (otherwise nawaz sharif becomes eligible also)....

...he agrees to give, "full support" to her party in the election......in return, she agrees to not oppose his candidacy as president......

so musharraf is president, and some guy from ppp (amin fahim?) is prime minister......benazir will not let any of her genuine leaders, like aitezaz ahsan become pm, as they will become more popular than her......

......this leave the uniform.....i suppose now musharraf does not have to take off his uniform......but the country will become too unstable if he doesn't......and ppp will not support him, if he doesn't.........so he takes off his uniform........

where does that leave nawaz sharif......nowhere, stuck in saudi arabia.....unless his party can win the election.......

where does that leave the maulvis......neither here nor there....niether part of the govt., nor part of the opposition, fully......

so the, "moderates" in the form of musharraf, benazir and altaf bhai (with chaudhries thrown in) will run the country......while the conservatives and religious right (imran khan, nawaz sharif, maulvis) will be in the opposition.......exactly what many people on this site wanted......specifically the expat community........

one big problem, though.......each one of the ruling moderates, has come into power, with huge cases of constitutional or financial corruption in their resumes.......so they will not last long.......

going by what has happened today, musharraf does seem like the out-smarter and this article seems accurate.......now, he can actually say that an, "independent" supreme court has legitimized his rule, which it has (the same supreme court that ruled against him, despite threats, in the cj case).......

Stuka, my response to your pet theory (i.e. Pak Army created Hindu hegemony myth) are just two simple questions:

1. Did Indian Army invade Kashmir in January 1948 or not?

No. It went to Kashmir on the invitation of the Maharaja.


2. Did India invade East Pakistan in Dec 1971 or not?

It invaded East Pakistan as a response to Pakistani air attacks on Dec 3 1971.

I willingly concede that India is seeking hegemony. How does the provision of murabbas of land, extra resources etc. to senior Army officers prevent that hegemony? The Indian Army has succesfully met Indian national security goals (probably more so than Pakistan Army) with a fraction of pay, perks and never taking national power.

.... based on what i have heard from some of the lawyers on geo and ary, i think they have the stomach for another 'movement' .... i think they will quite down once musharraf takes off his uniform and bb comes on board (remember, a lot of lawyers like aitizaz are ppp guys)......

......... all in all, it won't be a bad outcome if bb becomes the pm and everyone gets a share of the peanuts in the bandar-baant that is sure to follow ....

Mush & Co are totally indebted to Kaaf league and MMA for this judicial decision, makes matters worse going forward. Nothing changes in Pakistan, the only factor constant in this equation is Waardi rules, rest follow.

That depends on who is holding the crystal ball. If she believed in democracy, she would've given Kashmiris the plebiscite her dad promised first. Indira didn't get a rat's rear about democracy in Pakistan. She attacked East Pak only to avenge her father's defeat at the hands of Jinnah. In her first speech after the war, she said the "Two-Nation Theory" has drowned in bay of bengal. That kind of sums up her motivation for the war.

Handing AQ Khan to US, Indira establishing democracy in Pakistan, foreign powers de-nuking pakistan, etc... Can you Indians ever discuss anything without daydreaming?

If we ignore the lawyers' movement, then Mushy's re-election seems like a foregone conclusion. Fazlur Rehman probably knows the NWFP resignations will hurt MMA more than Mushy.

But Imran, Nawaz and Qazi have exerted enormous pressure on Fazl to resign. They are probably banking on a stiff agitation from the Black Coats.

This is a big gamble for the Mullahs. They only have 1 week to launch a national agitation against Mushy. If this move fizzles out, Mushy will strike a comfortable deal (on his terms) with BB and boot the Mullahs out of power in NWFP.

He and his daughter made serious mistakes on pakiland... after walking all over east pakiland in '71- she should have taken over west pakiland and neutered your military once and for all... by now - you pakis would be walking tall with a democractic nation - right?

Anyhoo - on paki nukes, I am just laying out the possibilities... when AQ Khan is handed over to uncle - he will spill the dirty beans all over, there will a lot of pressure to de-nuke pakiland or else... Mushy will demand a price for the job and that's it...

With everything that has happened in pakiland - this can't be that far-fetched... :)
