I am sitting here in USA.
I am unable to understand what is the crises, and what alternatives to this crises.
Lets hope a new kind of leadership emerges through this crises.
I am tired of seeing the politics of Kursi since 1980.

“We’ve been gifted with a crisis”, is appropriate account.
The growth of ‘mad persons’ is enormous, blessing coming out of the crisis. More collaboration is required to make a decisive thrust to end this agony. “Keep your anger alive”, the title of some article and truly make a sense in this situation.

we all need to combine our efforts for the restoration of ‘constitutional judiciary’(as of November 3) , because human rights, rule of law, free media, democracy and all signs of liberal society will emerge eventually.

Benazir should insist on the emergency/martial law roll back before agreeing to enter the general election -- because it is NOT the general election but a general's election.

Going for election under the emergency or martial law will be demeaning, disdainful and disastrous for PPP -- it will be beneath the dignity of a leader of her caliber.

[-- it will be beneath the dignity of a leader of her caliber.] Huh! Maybe you do not know. No politician in Pakistan has any dignity whatsoever, least of all BB.

at least on t.v., i have been watching thugs of jamiat tulba-i-islam protesting - ms. sarwar wants these nutcases and their mentors in power? or perhaps that completely baigharat woman, benazir bhutto - a convicted felon

the only probems i have with musharaf is that he acted too late to deal with these religious fanatics and has given amnesty to crooks like benazir - she has been prostituting democracy for years as a cover to loot the national treasury.

musharaf should resign - not because he has been a failure, (in fact he had done enough good and his goof-ups are limited) - he should resign to shift the focus from himself - so that one can deal with real problems - kiyani should take over - mullahs/taliban should be sent to houriland and benazir and mian sahib should be give the boot.

what is wrong with p.p.p - why cant they get rid of this woman - she is supposedly the only champion of democracy and at the same time her party's "chairperson for life" - is p.p.p that khusi? - they have no other leaders, execpt this vile individual

beena bibi,

........ if it will help the cause - whtever that might be - i too would like to register my support for the resistance ....... where do i sign up ? ....... i will also bring tahmed along to wave a flag and maybe participate in a dharna on the sidewalk as long as they are providing cocacola or pepsi ..... we are sorry, but unlike imran khan we cannot go on a hunger strike at this age - we get cranky if we miss breakfast .........

long live the revolution !

Author,

You are right on the dot. Something has definitely stirred in the soul of this nation. You have identified many factors leading to this change such as the lawyer's movement, May 12, and the Nov 3 assault on judiciary/media, but there's a further and more important factor. This is the sudden and shocking realization of civil society that this is 'it' - the final straw - it is now or never.

Let's see if it snowballs into a mass movement. I hope it does.

The problem with civil society has always been that they've been confused with what they want and how. With unclear goals, and vague priorities, they have been picking off the fruits of foreign supported dictatorships - while paying lip service to universal values like human-rights, democratic norms - at the same time completely forgetting with disdain that they live in Pakistan which is a bit larger, a bit more complex, and a lot more diverse than the minuscule civil society - world they live in.

When Jamia Hafsa was incinerated just 4 months ago along with all men / women/ children inside by the same musharraf, this very same civil society was silently gloating in his support. Now that the same musharraf has obliterated the superior judiciary and media, civil society suddenly sees itself losing all basic rights.

Are basic rights of banner waving secular civil-society elites fundamentally different from those of some habit-clad stick-wielding nuns? The former certainly appear to think they are. Fact is, both are (were in latter's' case) equally the citizens of Pakistan and enjoy/ed the same protections under the constitution of the country.

Has any of the civil society recognized even now, after we've slipped so far and so fast, that if they had resisted rather than supported the Jamia Hafsa massacre, the current situation may never have arisen?

I suspect they still don't have a clue.

Truth is, civil rights in Pakistan were buried in the Jamia Hafsa compound and the building (read Federation of Pakistan) demolished on top of it.

In the meantime, as you would know, the Jihadis (miscreants / shiddat-pasand/ askriat-pasand/ dehshat-gards etc, take your pick) do not regard any enemy too big or too powerful - and they have absolute clarity. Not only in what they want, but also the means to get it.

As I always say, may the best man win.

the resistance

... this reminds me of a day, a long long time ago, when atish was young and i used to smoke at least three or four joints a day ... okay, sometimes five or six ...... anyway, one fine day i woke up, had a joint or two and decided that i had had enough of the capitalist dogs and their lackeys the petty bourgeois .... i was also fed up with the imperialist war in vietnam and the exploitation of the proletariat by feudal lords and factory owners ..... i had recently discovered that dialectical materialism was the way to go and that political power belonged to the people ........

......so, like i was saying, i smoked a joint or two and set out with comrade rafi to take part in the rally being organized by the mazdoor kissan party on the mall in lahore ...... i think it was may first - it was hot ..... we didn't have enough money for a rickshaw so we decided to walk ..... by the time we got to mohammad ali firejumper's tea khoka at the moghalpura railway bridge, we were hot, thirsty, tired and down to our last k2 filter tipped cigarette ...... luckily, comrade rafi had a khata with mohammad ali so we sat down to have a pepsi and smoke our last k2 cigarette ....... then we had a bun kabab and some samosas and listened to lata singing "inhi logon nay" on the gramaphone ...... mohammad ali asked us if we wanted a bhara hua cigarette ........ he was a friendly sort of guy and you would never have thought that he was capable of setting himelf on fire and jumping into a tub of water from a twney five foot high platform at a mela ...... anyway, we accepted and stayed to have three or four ...... by then the sun had set and we went home .......

......... i have always wanted to join another revolution

Has it not dawned on chowkies that it is the Grand Old Party of hamidm that forced Musharraf to allow freedom of the Press in Pakistan? Why people continue to lie about this issue? With billions of dollars from the west in their back pockets the ruling elite could only assure this much freedom of speech. Let us give the devil its due, shall we?

Yes beena bibi, it is a crisis, but pakistanis have nothing to do with it. They can do what they want, but the decisions will be taken in washington.

Whether it is Nawaz should take part in the elections or whether it should be coalition, take your pick and it makes no difference.

Talk to uncle sam if you can.

The paki crisis is a crisis for the yanks, and the pakistanis are simply the pawns, as the pakistanis themselves admit.

The jihadis are due to the yanks, the attack on lal masjid is due to teh chionese brothel operators, and the waziristan is due to the yanks....where are the pakistabnis in this crisis..

We all know that there is a crisis in pakistan. YLH is not seen on chowk, obviously a new leader of pakistan is emerging from the crisis. Another is that Osama and company are quite on the events in pakistan. Clearly, they can see what is coming for them in waziristan.

#14 Posted by jayp,

Clearly, they can see what is coming for them in waziristan.

Please elaborate. What's coming to whom in Waziristan?

The pak army backed by the predators are coming to get the osamas of waziristan and hence they are keeping a low profile, to make themselves disappear.
