salim mian,
..... i don't mean to be cruel when i poke fun at OUR holy prophet (pbuh and his camel).... i do it to innoculate my fellow moslems against the onslaught of insults from danes, dutch, swedes and other islamophobic infidels ....... once they are used to taking insults from a fellow mohammedan, they will learn to ignore the dastardly dutch and refrain from burning motor cycles in lahore ........ my theory is that we moslems get insulted easily because we suffer from low self esteem ..... shoaib akhtar and irshad manji are the only two good things happening for the ummah at present .......

hamidumdum2 sahib re: #25,
You are one of my favorite interactors on FP. I love the way you seem to stagger to and fro and manage to get your point across. Seriously, janaab, you would be even more effective if you left out the horrible insults to Our Holy Prophet (PBUH). You come across as one of those horribly horrid Hindus - just a lot funnier, I must admit.

"booze not boom" should be the new slogan for muslims..

dr cheema sahib: so, in the Australian language it is g'day, not goodday. Of course. Hope you enjoy life with the wives on Australian beaches (wives = waves in the Australian language, as I learnt from a young lady from that country many years ago who was passing through Lahore..but that is another story..

#64 hamidm: i would be self-righteous if i claimed to have been perfect all my life. but that is not what i am saying. what i am saying is, if something is not good for your health (or, as in case of wine, has negative effects that far outweigh anything its positive effects), it doesnt make sense to glorify it. Real men dont need martinis to be cool, James Boond notwithstanding.

nb,
.... red wine headache is blamed on all sorts of things: tannins, sulphites, histamines, tahmed's self-righteous sermons and low testesterone levels ..... nobody knows because some white wines are higher in tennins and other stuff ...... i have found out that pinot noir doesn't give me the old headache and it tastes good ! ..... some old wives like tahmed also say that buying by the glass is a bad idea - oxidation and all that .......
...... try pinot noir and if that doesn't help give up drinking in this world and wait to dip into the streams of red and white wine that flow through heaven ...... did you hear that the shias can drink red wine because they consider it to be the blood of hussain ? ..... all they have to do to make it kosher is say three kalimas and two 'ya alis' and blow on the goblet ..... amazing!

G'day it is, tahmed. I'd never recommend more than two drinks a day, and don't drink more than three- that too once or twice a month- myself.
Alcohol does help drop inhibitions, and while too much of that can be a bad thing, as everyone knows, it is a lubricant to the smooth functioning of society in small quantities. Clearly, some people can't drink in small quantities and such people are better off not drinking at all.

#56 dr sahib: drinking to "relax" is the worst possible recommendation you could make, even if one was to take seriously your distinction between alcoholism and "drinking to relax". it would not be surprising to hear that from an illiterate truck driver, but it is sad to hear it from a surgeon!!
as a doctor, shouldnt you be advising people that a much better way to relax than drinking is to do some exercise, take a walk, take a nap?

tahmed, wine in moderation does extend life. There are multiple studies, including some that are RCTs-randomised controlled trials, which are the gold standard of evidence. I'm surprised a health fiend like you hasn't heard of that.
It is one of my everlasting regrets that red wine tends to give me migraine. I try to make up for it by drinking pomegranate juice and eating blueberries.

Re: # 54; tahmed sahib
here is an excerpt
from one such study; many in many parts of the world all indicating the sam e results
btw: what is drinking alcohol got to do with alcoholism? One drinks (in moderation) to relax, enjoy life etc
alcoholism, OTOH, is a disease where the whole thing becomes a 'compulsion'; the two are different
as they say...enjoy!
[Jefferson Study Shows Red Wine More Heart-Healthy Than Gin
When the choice is red wine or gin, choose red wine – at least when considering your heart’s health.
That’s according to a recent study by researchers at Jefferson Medical College (JMC) of Thomas Jefferson University in Philadelphia, who compared the effects of drinking either red wine or gin on several biochemical markers in the blood. Red wine contains many complex compounds including polyphenols, which are absent from gin. The researchers found that drinking red wine had a much greater effect in lowering levels in the bloodstream of so-called “anti-inflammatory substances that are risk factors in the development of heart disease and stroke.
The results, which appeared recently in the journal Atherosclerosis, didn’t surprise co-author Emanuel Rubin, MD, who led the study.
“It’s clear from these results that while drinking some form of alcohol lowers inflammatory markers, red wine has a much greater effect than gin, says Dr. Rubin, Distinguished Professor of Pathology at JMC.]

and while you are re-thinking, it would be good if you could confirm, rather than ignore, the many other problems with alcoholism i mention in #52.
#54 Posted by tahmed32 on May 14, 2008 5:40:46 am
#53 dr cheema sahib: that is absurd. please think a bit harder as a trained medical practitioner, and then come back and tell me that your claim that wine extends life is "well authenticated".
