The Non-Existent Tourist’s Guide To Pakistan

Skirmish of Wazir/Mehsud/Burki Tribes against British Army in enlightened and civilized colonial era Tribes were mostly led by Faqir Appi, who was Wazir. Syeds (Mullahs) in Wana were instrumental for wheeling/dealing and keeping Wazirs, Mehsudes, and Burkis united, intact and motivated against British. An ordinary Pathans has to consider himself the best therefore he would not allow anyone else to lead him even if he is Pathan. Though Pathan does not have Piri/Murdi or Feudalisms like rest of Indo-Pak particularly Sindh/Punjab because they were never Part/Parcel of enlightened and civilized British Royal India. Nonetheless they respect/regard only Syeds after themselves in the whole universe.
Few clans from Syeds, Wazir, Burkis and Mehsud, being weak hearted could not face the heat, so therefore quietly came down and opted for enjoying the peace and cool life in adjoining area of Bannu, DI Khan, Lucky Marvat and Mianwali. These fleeing clans were welcomed by British. Presently mostly from these fleeing clans are well settled and have average education and some power in Pakistan. Those in hill always look down and still taunt their cousins for their forefathers rent seeking behavior. As a return those fleeing clans of Wazir, Mehsud and Syeds like rest of Pakistanis (especially Husain Haqani) consider those in hills backward, evil, uncultured, uncivilized, terrorist and considers themselves enlighten, modern and forward looking.
Those freedom living tribes are still bearing US/Western Defacto-Colonialism with help of local Establishment. These tribes does not understand that resistance against might, struggle for truth is obsolete as it does not pay any more in this land of pure cartels. By the way, what good Faqir Eppi did by fighting against our colonial masters if compared with collaborators and middle men who still rule and control our fate, I mean Establishment. Generally it is considered that it is feudal class who collaborated with Colonials for exploitation/deprivation and they are main beneficiaries of that era till today. There is true to some extent, however it is a smoke screen to cover various other cartels, mafias and other brute forms of feudalism. Feudalism is rampant in every walk of life of Pakistan. Do not you think a DCO till recently lived/acted like a royal feudal? What about SP, he seems to be Generation Next Feudal. Big dirty fishes of Pakistan i.e. 50-60 Business mafias/cartels controlling II Chundrigar Road and Mall Roads (mostly beneficiaries/ blue eyed of East India Company) are also feudal in nature. As a simple example just Google the reason for vast fortune of Agha Khan. So called poor class political parties like MQM also rely on feudal violent tools for exploitation and deprivation. Do not you think well-heeled acolytes university professors are not feudals. Go and see their dirty politics and leg pulling which they do for petty gains. I have never been impressed by Deeni Madrasha/Mullah but what about clerk cloning Macaulay’s plants (Western Universities/College) in name of education, enlightenment and progress. I leave rest all such white collars feudal to your imagination in every sphere of life.
Most of the tribal clans coming down to settled area were naïve and not smart, and intelligent like Saifullah Family fore fathers. Saifullah father Faizullah was shepherd, however he sided with Colonial Royal Army against Waziri/Mehsud/Burki tribes in Wana/Meran Shah. Saifullah Marvat and his father was first Muslim League in Lucky Marvat area since 1930s. Aslam Khatak (Brrother in-law of Saifullah) was also among first Muslim League in adjacent Karak District since 1930. He along with Chaudery Rahmat Ali while in Cambridge on British Royal Scholarship. They coined the name of Pakistan. Aslam Khatak and his family main services for British Royal Army were against Ajab Khan Afridi (Dara Adam Khel). Gen Ali Quli Khan (Musharaf competitor for CAS back in 1997) is nephew of Aslam Khatak and one of his brother in law was Governor. Saifullah family share a vast fortune of more than 25 concerns like Lucky Cement, Mob link, General Tires, Nissan Ghandraha etc. It is such irony that most of the Army/Air Force units which are fighting now in Meran Shah, Wana and other tribal areas have also fought with same tribes/clans till 1947. Another big irony India is fighting in held Kashmir for last 30 years and how many times they have used Jet Fighters for bombing Kashmiris. Azad Kashmir held today by Pakistan was not liberated by Pak Army and Air force rather liberated by same clans/tribes who are sometimes labeled as Taliban, uncivilized, dirty Naswar eating Pathans, and according to Nadeem Paracha (The Dawn Writer/Aaj TV anchor) a pseudo-intellectual think that in north/tribal area no woman live and only men/goats live.
Some time I feel crippled when I think about my Identity. When I am unable to read my mother language and unable to related to my profound history which has been made irrelevant and meager. I can hear this history in local songs and it is off course trouble some for local establishment (various economic/political/feudal/bureaucratic cartels controlling II Chundrigar Road, Mall Roads and Constitution avenue) but also international establishment (Jews/Zionist/US/UK). Though we will not find any consensus on the definition/causes of terrorism but there is 101 % agreement on ethnic cleansing of all those who in one way or other resisted colonial five/six decades ago or still think of resisting neo-colonialism or their imposed local cartels of business/politics/bureaucracy/identity. In Pakistan, in every walk of life those people are in control, whose forefathers in one or other way helped British or East India Compnay. Rest all are masses, they does not count anywhere. While for last fifty we are crushing those people who were/are against local and international establishment or show any such inclinations.
In defacto-colonial society like Pakistan most of roles are supposed to be clerk type, which are boring, insignificant and monotonous. These roles/opportunities are never impressive. With passage of time procedures policies and work practices have become obsolete, are against simple rational and mostly based on mistrust, difficult to extent where pity/ordinary jobs are accomplished with huge wastage of time, money, manpower and resources. The biggest motivation in life is work and trust, however most of the time, our productive work pace is dead slow and unrealistic. Pakistan was supposed to continue inherited colonial state structure. Therefore middle/lower classes in general and poor most in particular are exploited and deprived at multiple levels on pretext of various merits, standards, ethics and unseen Berlin walls erected by our colonial masters. Our pre-1947 pseudo freedom fighters and so called god fathers did not have vision, capacity or planning for these issues. Muslim league was Sarkari League from the first day of its origin. The main objective was to create faithfulness among Indopak Muslim for British Royal Establishment. Similarly ANP and Congress at that time were preaching non-violence meaning that you do not fight against British Raaj. We were/are victim of the LAW OF NECESSITY even before our birth. This so called politics/democracy/voting is for fooling the Masses. It does not implies that Gen Mush, Zia, Ayub are better than Zardari, Nawaz, BB and other stuff. They all are pawns among thousands pawns controlling whole Muslim world for the their Western Masters.
Unquestioned and unconditioned subordination is expected in every walk of life Due to same colonial traditions. While all corrupts (various economic/political/feudal/bureaucratic cartels controlling II Chundrigar Road, Mall Roads Lhr/R-Pindi/Pesh/Queta and Constitution Avenue) will enjoy, control and set the rules of games. They will exploit masses in name of democracy, identity, merit, logic and history. Crippled honest masses will be expected to be a tiger, who will able to bear rotten system for whole life, dodge the corrupts and avoid all temptation against all natural forces. The only way to survive is absolute conformist behavior, and any deviation/difference on any issue/crisis/identity is not tolerated. Most of our state rules/laws/ traditions/norms are decades old and date back to colonial era therefore mostly irrelevant and inapplicable. As a result middle and lower classes in general and poor most in particular are manipulated according to corrupts (various economic/political/feudal/bureaucratic cartels controlling II Chundrigar Road, Mall Roads Lhr/R-Pindi/Pesh/ Queta and Constitution Avenue) politics, whims, goals, personal agenda and likes/dislikes. Wrong practices are justified by these corrupts by other wrong practices. Our colonial social set up expect/support/ promote only conformist roles. Role redesign opportunities or change in such colonial societies like Pakistan are limited by design. The narrow range and depth of social roles does not have any space for innovation or change. For past 60 years, it is not coincidences or masses errors that every time we have laid flat in front of US or West.
Shahzeb Khan English Lecture in GC University in one of his article writes about the same in DAWN that “Few of us know that tens of thousands of British officials were denied reappointment in their home country once India and Pakistan won independence in 1947. They were not terminated but were disallowed to work because they were considered unfit to work in a free and democratic country. The context of colonisation influenced working habits of these officials while they were in India. These officials considered themselves part of the metropolis and that they were there only to govern the subjects of the colony. This notion was accompanied with a set of ‘skills’ which these officials were supposed to internalise. After they arrived in India, they were indoctrinated with the ideas of 'superiority' and ‘inferiority’ of Indians they were supposed to govern. “
Any rational and thinking animal in such colonial society, will consider honest/sincere growth/existence in Pakistan, out of context, irrelevant and wasteful not only for honest/sincere and his family but Pakistan also does not need such people. Only Idiots and super idiots thrive, who are well connected and fattest. If any honest continue to live in Pakistan as honest/sincere, he lead boring, static, hypocritical life and this feeling constantly pinches him like wearing a shoe of small size than his foot. On other hand, if he leaves for abroad, he start from zero and have to work really hard for his existence some where else as second grade citizen without any noble IDENTITY. At this juncture in our national life, we Pakistani have to redefine our original identity based in Islam and Land (Punjabi/ Sindhi/Balochi/Pashtoo), which will burgeon our potentials and endow our faculties for more exacting. We have to shed our colonial identity (insecure and fragile) imposed on us. We should undertake a fresh challenge, an IDENTITY -altering venture that allow us to paint the happenings and experiences of our existence and our dreams on a broader canvass. I rest our IDENTITY dilemma for your kind comments, expert advice and candid opinion. I can bear facts without sugar coating.

I foresee years of conflict around the world as followers of exclusivist world views face the inexorable march of science. I foresee a triumph of those ideas that value experiential knowledge and universality. New religions will have to learn to respect the old and also respect the right of the individual to choose. Eventually there can be only one religion, that of truth and humanity.

It is fascinating how people justify their situation even if they must side with their oppressors. In India this has happened countless times. Some of the worst tyranny on the Hindus was imposed by new converts. In Kashmir, Sikandar's minister Suha Bhatta, a new Muslim, abetted his king in the forcible conversion of the Hindus. According to the historian Ferishta, Sikandar ordered that only Muslims be allowed to reside in Kashmir. Those who tried to flee the valley were cut down by armed soldiers at mountain passes.

Another interesting case of a different type is that of Muhammad Iqbal, the poet and originator of the idea of Pakistan. His grandfather Sahaj Ram Sapru, a revenue collector, embezzled funds and when discovered the Afghan governor, Azim Khan, gave him the choice of death or conversion to Islam. Sahaj Ram Sapru chose life and, assuming new names, he and his family moved to Sialkot in the Punjab. Later Iqbal never acknowledged his native Kashmiri and Indian tradition that his grandfather had been so cruelly forced to renounce.

Perhaps this reveals that terror wins. The victims wish to be like their tormentors. Which is why the descendents of the American Indians, who were treated with such monumental barbarity by the Spaniards, wish to forget their native heritage. But such amnesia leads to a weakening of the spirit, a loss of purpose, confusion about ends and means. To progress all are alike; it recognizes no religion, only a search for truth. Those who would not be true to their past will not be able to recognize the truth about the future.

You had a nice tourist visiting Karachi in 2002. Do you remember him. He was in one piece while coming but while going back he was in two pieces in a body bag. I am not sure abut the later part, but we all saw on a video he becoming 2 pieces.

It was a witty piece in places but, I must ask, was it really necessary? Self-hate is the worst form of hatred.

IF (and it is a big IF) the imbeciles who run the blighted country were bright enough to invest heavily in promoting tourism--and building the necessary infrastructure to go with it--Pakistan could have a booming tourist industry in 10 years.

Despite my previous assertions I think you have a very valid point. Sometimes there can be far too much pandering and undue importance given to women's issues and I also agree all this (at least in the educated east and west) is very disproportionate.

I think the issue was that sometimes your posts were a little out of context to what the article was/is about; this can at times lead to a sense of irritation on the part of some ineteractors which, I am sure you'd agree, can be counter productive.

May I recommend an article perhaps, or even an ilog or a thread on UnPlugged. I am sure your message IS important and there would be many who'd want to discuss this issue ..... albeit at times in their own, individualised yet intellectually refreshing ways.

While "mistakes" might have been made, the major players were not the "left" in Afghanistan that brought it to the condition we see today, the major cause of its condition today is the US using the Pak Army and the ISI and the mullahs. The left and the mullahs don't see eye to eye, and regardless of the concessions made by the left those with ulterior motives i.e. the US (whose backyard Afghansitan was not unlike the SU, who wanted moreso to keep the US (using the mullah cover of the countryside)out of the area rather than dominate it for the sake of reaching a warm water port (as was speculated), would have acted. We saw what happened to ZAB and how after every concession to the Mullah they wanted more and more, this is not how a country is salvaged or the left mainstreamed, it is how they are either coopted or butchered by the powerful interests, and do not forget that the left tries to incorporate the people into the power equation unlike the powerful interests that use them to maintain the current structure.


The fault was not with the left, and the lefts policies didn't fail in Pakistan or any other place, the fault was with a much better organized and powerful opponent who using the local thugs could get what he desired, the left was made to fail and regardless of the "lack of mistakes" or compromise would have been made to fail. Now, when the US seeks escalation into Pakistan of its farcial WOT, look how it reacts to any attempts to "consider the countryside"- suggesting that it all be ignored and no deals made....This my friend was the anatomy of the problem: the US wanting to punish the SU in its own backyard, the SU deeply trapped in the US farcial (cold) world war, understanding this and then intervening, thus falling into the US trap, before this even when Afghanistan went with a begging bowl to the US, the US ignored them. Their interest was viz a viz the SU, and they are not so "benevolent" to let the SU act and then do their part, they preempt and seek to escalate, like they are doing in Pakistan, they seek to set traps- you are being too forgiving of the US actions in that area that has reduced Afghanistan to the stone age graveyard it has become.

while you may be in a position to cast the first stone, i for one certainly am not!!

I totally agree with hamid mian that masadi should be banned for ever. As an interactor, he creates disharmony, and goes beyond the bounds of plain decency. To get his point of view across, he uses foul languages, and that has been flagged by many. He constantly and continuously uses foul languages towards many interactors. This style of interaction is definitely against your interaction guidelines at chowk. Please do whatever is necessary to get rid of this interactor, so that most of us who come at the chowk can enjoy interacting on this site.

The Fading American Economy:

According to the Bureau of Labor Statistics, the US economy lost 98,000 private sector jobs in March, half of which were in manufacturing. Today 13,643,000 Americans are employed in manufacturing, of which 9,849,000 are production workers.

Government employs 22,387,000 Americans, 8,744,000 more than manufacturing. Even the category leisure and hospitality employs 13,682,000 Americans, slightly more than manufacturing. There are as many waitresses and bartenders as production workers.

Wholesale and retail trade employ 21,467,000 Americans. Professional and business services employ 18,036,000 Americans of which 8,368,000 are in administrative and waste services. Education and health services employ 18,699,000 Americans.

Financial activities employ 8,228,000 Americans. The information sector employs 3,010,000. Transportation and warehousing employ 4,532,000. Construction employs 7,338,000, and natural resources, mining and logging employ 751,000. Other services such as repair, laundry, and membership associations employ 5,516,000 Americans.

This is the portrait of the US economy according to the Bureau of Labor Statistics. It is an economy in which government is the largest employer. Manufacturing employment comprises just under 10% of total employment and about 12% of private sector employment. Everything else is services, and not particularly high level services.

Is this a portrait of a super economy?

To help answer the question, consider that US imports in 2007 were 17% of US GDP, according to the National Income and Product Account tables provided by the Bureau of Economic Affairs. In contrast, the BEA industry tables show that in 2006 (2007 data not yet available) US manufacturing comprised only 11.7% of US GDP.

If US imports actually exceed total US manufacturing output by 5% of GDP, it does not seem possible that the US can close its massive trade deficit. Even if every item manufactured in the US was exported, the US would still have a large trade deficit.

The NIPA and industry tables from which the percentages come are not calculated identically, and I do not know to what extent differences might exaggerate the differences between the percentages. However, it seems unlikely that mere calculation differences would account for US imports exceeding US manufacturing output.

If the US cannot close its trade deficit, it is unlikely that the US dollar can remain the world reserve currency. If the dollar were to lose the reserve currency role, the US government would not be able to finance its annual red ink budget by borrowing from foreigners, as the US saving rate is about zero, and the US would not be able to pay its import bill in its own currency. The rest of the world continues to hold depreciating US currency, because the dollar is the world reserve currency. The dollar is certainly not a good investment having declined dramatically against other traded currencies.

From March 2007 to March 2008 the US economy created 1.5 million new jobs (in services). Legal and illegal immigration and work visas for foreigners exceed US job creation.

During the current school year, 3.3 million high school students are expected to graduate. If we assume that half will go on to college, that leaves 1.6 million entering the work force. College enrollment in 2007 totaled 18 million. If we assume 20% graduate, that makes another 3.6 million job seekers for a total of 5.2 million. Clearly, immigration, work visas, and high school and college graduates exceed the 1.5 million jobs created by the economy. Unless retirements opened up enough jobs for graduates, the unemployment rate has to rise.

The US unemployment rate is creeping up, and according to John Williams, the official unemployment rate greatly understates the real rate of unemployment. Williams has followed the changes that government has made to the official indices over the years in order to spin a more politically palatable picture. Williams uses the original methodology prior to the decades of spin. The original way of measuring unemployment indicates the current rate of unemployment in the US to be 13%, much higher than the 5.1% official number.

Williams also calculates the CPI according to the same way it was officially calculated prior to the recent decades of spin. Williams estimates the current CPI at 12%, three times higher than the official 4% figure.

Williams reports that upward growth biases built into GDP modeling since the early 1980s "have rendered this important series nearly worthless as an indicator of economic activity." Williams estimates that US GDP growth has been in negative territory during almost all of the 21st century. The notion that the US is just now entering a recession is nonsense if we have in fact been in recession for most of the 21st century.

America's post-World War II economic dominance was based on the destruction of other economies by war and socialism. It is a different world now, and Americans have given little thought to the economic challenges of the 21st century.

PESHAWAR: Allied troops’ movement on Pak-Afghan borders in North and South Waziristan has geared up.

Hundreds of Allied troops armed with their choppers, tanks, mortars and high-tech weapons have arrived at the Pak-Afghan borders, while the tribesmen viewing the situation threatening have started shifting from the bordering areas. Sources said that hundreds of Allied troops armed with their helicopters, tanks, mortars and high-tech weapons have started arriving since last night near the bordering areas Ghulam Khan, Shawal, Amir Chapsar and Alwara. Allied forces warplanes were also seen hovering over these areas, sources said.

Following the arrival of Allied troops and hovering of the aircrafts in the sky, the tribesmen fearing the worst have started evacuating these bordering areas.

Genuine tourist attaractions are there in FATA and they should be publicised. One of them is the p[ak army training of teh surrender ceremony, drilled into teh head of every paki soldier. here is one such ceremony, that should have been a big tourist attaraction, paki army men surrendering to the jihadis, and the paki army camp being blown up.

Militants in Hangu loot, blow up FC fort

KOHAT, July 14: Militants blew up a Frontier Constabulary fort in the Shinawarai area of Hangu district on Monday night after looting arms and ammunition.

Witnesses said that about 250 militants had besieged the fort, 30kms from Hangu town, and asked FC personnel to vacate it or face action.

After some time, the personnel decided to leave the fort. They were given ‘safe passage’ by the assailants.The militants entered the fort and loaded their vehicles with arms and ammunition. “Later, they planted explosives in the fort and blew it up,� a local man said.

"There is hardly any patch on earth to which these people do not lay claim over one pretext or another. Last year I was exploring Taragarh fort that overlooks Ajmer town from atop a hill. This was the historical fort where Prithviraj Chauhan lived in a palace. It was occupied by Ghuri after he killed Chauhan. A terrible massacre of Hindus of Ajmer followed with the usual "religion of peace" offering of mass rapes, arson and capture of women as sex slaves.

The fort is reached via a narrow road that winds uphill to the fort entrance. When I reached the fort along with SHQ, I was shocked to see a full-fledged Muslim colony inside with lot of goats running around. There were many vehicles parked around carrying J&K number plates. There is apparently a Muslim "dargah" inside. I was curious. A dargah right inside Prithviraj Chauhan's fort? Since when?

The entire area looks scary with so many long-bearded Muslims around. Two Muslims followed our car all the way from the base of the hill to the fort entrance on a motorcycle. Watching them in my rear view mirror on that deserted road, I was quite nervous as to what is going on. When I reached the top, my wife was literally screaming at me to get the hell out of there before something nasty happens and we get mugged.

I U-turned the car, drove some distance and halted midway downhill where the BJP government has created a monument to Prithviraj Chauhan. There, feeling safer, I asked a Muslim guide loitering near by as to what was the white structure inside the fort on the hill top and what were so many Muslims doing there? Why is the fort not a national monument and why a Muslim colony has taken over the entire fort?

I was told by the Muslim -- who seemed to be a tourist guide waiting for tourists like us -- that the dargah was there even before Prithviraj's time and Prithviraj's father had offered a chaddar on the mazaar. I found this laughable, but I was curious. So I did some research as to who the dude really was and how his dargah came to be right in the patch where Prithviraj's residential palace should have been.

I found out that he was actually Mohammad Ghuri's military commander who took over the fort and started living in Prithviraj's palace. Once his entire garrison had left the fort to go to the countryside collecting taxes from the peasants. Prithviraj's brother Hari Raj saw his chance to avenge the loss of his kingdom and death of Prithviraj and Samyukta. He along with a small band of trusted men struck in the night in a guerrila raid and slaughtered everyone inside, including Ghuri's commander. Then Hari Raj quitely dissappeared to his own kingdom of Ranthambhore. It is this military commandar's grave that has now become the "dargah of revered saint."

The Muslims are very concious of the significance of the fort (but the Hindus are ignorant of their own history). This fort was the first city they captured in Hindustan and they are sitting there deliberately even today, refusing to move out. If the government as much as tries to erect a statue of Prithviraj inside the fort, they are ready to riot. It is a hopeless situation.

Anyway, I asked this Muslim guide about why the Muslims are sitting inside the fort when it is a Hindu structure and why have they monopolised the entire area? He said that the fort has always belonged to them. I said but there were no Muslims in India before the arrival of invader Ghuri. The man got angry. "We have 64 thousand prophets that Allah sent before Mohammad," he said. "And two were from India. Our prophets were in India even before the Hindus and we have more right to the country than them." Disgusted and amazed by the explanation, I just left him standing there and drove away. Take any patch of land on this earth, and Muslims have a story to stake claim to it."

This is happening in India, one can only guess what might be happening in Pakistan?

If Islam does not reform and Muslims do not change then it will be everyone's dharma to exterminate it.

Wonderful article Nadeem. In addition to being funny, this article shows a great amount of introspection and self-criticism. Something sorely lacking in south asia. People seem to prefer to blame the CIA, RAW, ISI, and god knows who else for their problems. Suicide bombings in Pakistan? It must be those dastardly Indians allying themselves with the jihadis to screw us over. Anything to avoid "humiliation".
