I agree with you on the basis of current reckoning; but things change and who knows, in 15 -20years, there may be a different set of geopolitics, dominated by China in the same way as it is by the US now. And, even you may get Heidi Klum as your second wife, if you convert to the right faith, or even Kulhari's. :)

very good post, majumdar dada # 16.

There is anti-India rhetoric of Resident Non-Indians and then there is reality.

DM sahib,

What India lacks expertise is in the core reactor which will have to be outrightly imported or built in India by domestic subsidiaries of the likes of Areva and eventually by L&T and BHEL et al under licensing arrangements.

The rest of the stuff like civil work, electricals, balance of plant and turbines can be done by local vendors. It will also make the whole stuff cheaper.

Re: IPI

The pipeline will benefit domestic petro players in Western India to a much greater extent and the elder Ambani dominates the petro landscape here with his Jamnagar unit.

But I dont think the N-deal in any way reduces the need for additional gas, IPI or otherwise. N and gas are substitutes ONLY for power and the requirements for power are enormous. And of course gas can't be substituted by N- for fertilisers, chemicals or as domestic/auto-fuel.

Regards

What does India lose by "losing" Iran? Is Iran owe biggest oil supplier and does it give us special deals below going market rates?

DM Sahib, I want to have Heidi Klum as my wife #2 but it ain't gonna happen. So the Pakistanis can ask for whatever they want....but they are not going to get it.

Plus, I have a better chance of my wish coming true than Pakistan does.

There is this silly need among some people to draw parity between the two countries. There is none. There hasn't been for a long time. So please....stop this charade.

Australians are flip-flopping on the issue; it seems that there are internal differences in the govt. There are reports that Australia may reverse its decision on Uranium supplies. I believe Canada is a supporter of the deal and it has very large supplies of Uranium; we also want to sell our Candu reactors.

Not just the small guys, big guys in India are behind the project. Reports suggest that condition for anyone bidding for the nuclear project would be that 30% of the contract value will be sourced from within India. Actually, they should make it a minimum of 30% and the amount of work sourced to India should be one of the selection criteria.

Pakistanis have been asking for equal treatment from the time in 2005 when the negotiations for the deal started.

Yes, there is big money behind it. This is why Amar Singh - an Anil Ambani man, was so active in supporting the govt. at the time of the no-confidence motion. I wouldn't be surprised if Advani's opposition to the deal stems partly from the fact it reduces urgency for the Iranian pipeline which is heavily backed by Mukesh Ambani who is closer to Advani.

Ekal contd...
Furthermore, China is very much against India coming closer to EU and USA. They have used CPI and CPI(M) to pull the rug under the current Govt. The Ambanis have spent enough money to keep the Govt. alive. BJP was the jocker in the pack. I wish, BJP behaved different way.
Couple of concerns - US is against closer tie between India and Iran. If India have to work at the whims of USA, India will loose Iran, and that will be kind of bad for India....
How Cuba, Venejuela and other NAM countries view this, that has to be noticed. A F15 or F/A-18 manufactured in HAL site, if used against Iran or Cuba or Venejuela, will look very ugly for India.

I would have preferred Europe rather than USA taking the initiative and go for joint venture with India....

Dash...
You are correct. But, Howard had very positive attitude towards India. The current Labour Party is something different...

Re: # 2
Ekal...
Yes man...Mush, Gillani all have begged to Bush for similar deal. Now, China is pitching in.

You are looking into US$20bn of nuclear trade alone, but mind that, it may be likely that India will be next manufacturing hub for Westinghouse or GE?
India can be part of NSG to provide Thorium based technology and fuel for FBR programs, on which India is banking heavily.
Bush have already urged that, India can not be kept out side mainstream nuclear research bodies like ITER ....

All the political parties know, why US is going for the deal. USA likes to use India as low cost manufacturing base for high tech segments like Space, Defence etc..., which was so far Russian monopoly.
India have the basic capability of research and manufacturing in these sectors. USA wants to leverage that, like that of IT and Semiconductor research of HP,Intel, IBM, Cisco, Motorola....
So, it is highly unlikely Pakistan will come into the picture just for the sake of Pakistan having couple of nuclear reactors....

Ha Ha ha...nicely said...
Anyhow, China has to keep the morale of it's pet dog, high. Otherwise, it will not try to bite the gentleman living next door.
Anyhow, China has got tight slap at NSG. More to come. Now USA,UK, Russia, France and Japan is with India. If Howard would have been in Australia, he would have supported India.

The big guys may get the tender, but the execution would be done by the local manufacturers.

compare this with the coming of Honda and Suzuki to India- they sell the cars but it has spawned thousands of ancillaries in technical collaboration with others.

And look who is talking !! For these mullahs , there is no need to toil for those business opportunities when you can just force Islam and take away their millions.

In the end it is India that is all set to gain.

“China wants N-deal for Pakistan – The Daily Times September 09, 2008

I admire Chinese diplomacy. They score easy points with Pak masses. They know full well that NSG will not approve such a deal in near or far future.
