I cannot respect an artist who choses to be alienated from his roots under peer pressure or suffering from complex ...... Jagjit sang a few not unforgetable songs in Punjabi.....

It all depends upon how much Ghazal and who you have listened to.
Mehdi Hasan is without doubt the best.
The golden period of Pakistani Music is mostly related to Ghazal with names like Suriya Multanekar, Farida Khanum, Malka Pukhraj, Ustaad Amanat Ali.
I have listened to Ghazals of Ghalib By Jagjit Singh in drama Ghalib. It is impressive but not classical. I am not fortunate enough to listen to Jaggit Singh.

I would agree with urstruly and naqsh. By ghazal one has usually thought of something sung/voiced along the lines of Ghulam Ali and Begum Akhtar's singing.

The qeustion is: Has jagjit singh now done enough to create his own authemtic ghazal style, separate from the traditional one?

The situation is something like what old timers feel about sehgal (sp?). Sahgal admirers looked askance at the singing styles of new breed such as kishore, rafi, and mukesh. And if one listens to sahgal (after the initial shock) one realizes why he continues to be worshipped by by many. But then rafi et al made tneir own way forward.

Jagjit, being practically alone, has had nowhere near that much of a transformative effect, but he might have had some effect - bringing ghazal to a much larger audience. For many people now ghazal means mainly jagjit singh and very little of anything else.

Jagjit is an incredible artist and a class in his own. But his voice is more suitable for Geet rather than Ghazal.

teri ek negha par nisar hai.
We were teenagers then and suddenly this Nahid Niazi poem was eclipsed by Jagjit's Baat Niklay GHi to phir and 'Jag ne cheena mujh se mujeu jo bhi laga piyara'.
His quality comes out in the backdrop that he had to compete with singers like Ghulam Ali, Mehdi Hassan and Asad Amanat. He was an instant hit with youngsters here.

Re: # 9 I do not know the site which give his rendering of Gazals by Galib. Saigal has Voice which works very well with little gloom and and sings with great passion of poem.
This may be probably due to time. Mr. Saigal probably died in in 1943 ( ? ).It is long time and must have less and less fans due to time. Most young people may not have listend him is my belief but just heard about him. If some body knows it will be great benefit to all listners.
Good day

harish,

idiotic comments don´t change facts. any ghazal connoisseur
will tell you that mehdi hassan and ghulam ali are in a different league to jagjit singh. nothing to do with nationalities. begum akhtar was indian last time i checked.

Re: # 3 To Pinku Pundit:

You have a valid point! How can one accomodate half naked girls.

But Why do you say the that Bollywood movies are financed by the underworld? I find itdifficultto believe that.

Can we please quit the india Pakistan debate from ghazal at least?

Sure. But someone had to make Naqshbandi happy; I did it.

Jagjit is just great! ... I watched Mirza Ghalib recently and I felt finally someone did justice to Ghalib's poetry .... especially "hazaaron khwahishein aisee ..."
