Excellent write up!
This could be panacea for Amo-Pak WOT side effects. This idea will be surely helpful to the peaceful minds who are struglling with their pens and voices while govt and media had failed in developing and delivering any such message effectively. A great idea and food of thought.

Quin sahib had mentioned another interesting scholar of Islam who had eliminated (or signficantly reduced) violence in Oman by re-interpreting the Quran. He might be able to repost that information here.

Excellent and informative article. I find it incredible how so many Pakistanis still dont get it - these arab and central asian and taliban thugs are merely using islam to gain power. This is becoming more and more clear with the passage of time.

..... it is a good thought but unfortunately most jihadis cannot read and their leaders, who can, write their own interpretations, tafseers and what not ...... otherwise, our own prophet-in-training, tahmed (ra), has been putting forth his benign and sissified version of the koran for years which has fallen on deaf ears ....... the only converts he has so far are me and a pacifist hindoo named eklavya .......
isa sahib, good try, but this dog don't hunt ...

"You cannot decide who is Muslim or who is an unbeliever"
In other words there can be a person who professes even atheism but he may actually be more muslim than a bad Muslim person who even though professes Islam is not actually a Muslim. And determination by "you" to decide who is Muslim is not possible. Muslimness is not human-computable function.

Hamidm: I am watching aaj-tv and here are two ads I just saw -
1. Sound of mullah yelling "Allahhhhhh-o-Akbar". Is this a call to prayer? A military charge taking place? No...it is an ad for a cell phone. In other words, Islam being used to market goods.
2. A voice says "Soorma laganaN sunnat hai." Is this one of Naqshbandi's aalims discussing theology? No...it is an ad for..Soorma.
So - dont expect reason or common sense (which is all one needs to understand that what passes for Islam in Pakistan has nothing to do with the Quran) to come between the "monim" and his lust for power or (in the case above) and his marketing efforts.

This is a really interesting topic. Here's the link to the new yorker article by Lawrence Wright about Fadl that you mentioned:
http://www.newyorker.com/reporting/2008/06/02/080602fa_fact_wright
Even if Dr. Fadl's writings doesn't make thousands of Talibs suddenly lay down their arms, it's still a very good thing that one of Zawahiri's closest associates is writing something like this.

Dear writer,
I am not sure whether you are an apologists for these extremely dangerous people or simply a liberal trying to find a palatable conservative. It really doesnt matter, your alternative is just another circular method to get to the same, killing innocent people in the name of religion.
This is not the first time nor will it be the last when people with extremist views and violent methods have tried to impose their viewpoint on others, nor has there been a dearth of moderates trying to find balance in society. But the real solution has always come from a state that offers better alternatives, the will and means to impose rule of law. Point being, we need the state to take responsibility and religious lobby to be subservient to the state.

"Point being, we need the state to take responsibility and religious lobby to be subservient to the state" you wrote.
The article points to one practical way of getting to this.

i will have to look this up and see what context there is to these points... 90% of the times things on the net or media are said without stating the context they were spoken in which misleads ppl...
the point here is that the talibans fighting in afghanistan are fighting a just war, they had a govt which was forcefully toppled.. there was peace and war was declared on them. al qaeeda i dont know much about but what they say on tv sometimes and elsewhere makes a lot of sense, they just dont want usa to interfere in muslim nations, which is very fair, i think its something even china and venezuala are saying and if they are poked like usa is poking muslims i have every reason to believe they will send a few bombers to wash dc.. so long story short you barge into someones house and expect them to offer you tea is an alien thought...
every muslim agrees that civilains should not be attacked and this thought is not alien to taliban and al qaeeda, so to assume that every bombing done is by them is ignorance. we must always get our facts right before blaming someone, sadly the western media has created such a hype that even god fearing muslims sometimes fall into its trap and start pointing fingers to fellow muslims..

I am amazed at what all the hoopla is about? Did we really have to wait until 2007 for Hazrat Fadl(SAW) to tell us this?
Dear author, any number of believing, practicing, muslims could have told you all this since they were 10 years old; and they have been shouting themselves hoarse doing exactly that since 9/11/2001.
Unless your point is that the only person that the murderous lot would listen to has to be a certified former loonie from amongst themselves. But, in that case, why should this enlightened and moderated Principia Jihadica be made compulsory reading for all and sundry? Do you really believe that all madrassahs are necessarily indoctrinating their students to indulge in violent mayhem?
Jihad, including armed combat, is a valid course of action according to the beliefs of Islam under certain circumstances. The failure, at large, is to confuse Islamic jihad with the present fasad, which it is not. Now I don't know if St. Fadl had this epiphany, on the road to Cairo, that the baby needs to be thrown out with the bath water, or it is something which you are advocating as a value added enhancement to his entirely trivial discovery. Either way, it is completely bogus.
Lastly, we need to realize (the Quran already tells us this) that fasad only breeds fasad. Why else do you think it is insistent on endlessly repeating that Allah(SWT) Abhors fasad, and that He(SWT) Abhors mufsideen?
Whiners should not insist on throwing rocks at the bee hives. The bees are not known to have taken a course in logic 101.

Dear Writer,
I can't believe such a pathetic piece of crap....Jihad/war/self defense/realization of self forwarding/or perhaps a form of aggression has been used by every race, creed, religion, empire known to mankind....why is it that all of a sudden it becomes such a big deal when people in our country resort to it in a more radical passion. The only reason why we control part of Kashmir is because of these terrorists. We can never defeat India or any other force any where in the world with out these ruthless killers.... Doesn't matter where they come from..egypt, saudi arabia, or even Africa, they are all fighting for a reason and it looks like they are winning and believe me once they win, they are not going to be just a bunch of stupid thugs with out laid out flat form to which sort of rule they would resort to. They will probably be admired for their bravery to win and then the type of the ruling.....let's see it might be a while but it is a definite certainty.
