How is the Pakistani Government different from an occupation force? It charges us taxes, more vehemently and irrationaly than the British Raj, and Pak Gov remains more unaccountable to us than the British Raj.

The current system of central government is very similar to the Jazia System of Muslim Occupation Forces of the past. Where they would occupy people, and let them live in Peace if they paid Jazia which was a form of ransome. AND THEN YOU WONDER WHY IS THE WRIT OF GOVERNMENT WEAKENING!

You guys seem to come from a class where you cannot fully understand the problems being faced by an ordinary people.

The Tax on mobile prepaid card was just one example of governmental fleecing. Government is fleecing in more than one ways. And this would be true both in India and Pakistan.

The question is, where is all this money going? And why shouldn't government be held responsible for its spending?
And why shouldnt taxation be rationalized?

Taxes are levied all over the world, includng pakistan. What makes Pakistan and India and other similar countries unique is the lack og government accountability!

Television pictures in India showed the men chasing and beating up the panicking women. Some of the women, who tripped and fell, were kicked by the men.

But our correspondent says that right-wing Hindu vigilante groups loosely linked to the BJP are active in many parts of India and have in the past targeted Muslim and Christian minorities as well as events such as Valentine's Day.

I thought the above was a "tolerant, progressive and modern country"
...... any comments Mr jayp..... people like you really disgust me, you are NO different then a bigot Talib

ISLAMABAD: Pakistan government has reportedly put fresh curbs on disgraced nuclear scientist A Q Khan after the world community expressed
serious concerns over setting him free, after nearly five years of house arrest.

The rogue scientist who had confessed to having passed on nuclear know how to Iran, North Korea and Libya is not being given access to visitors and has to notify the government 48 hours in advance before leaving Islamabad.

Sources close to Khan told the Dawn newspaper that a few people met the scientist after the Islamabad High Court declared him a "free citizen" last week, but no one was allowed to enter his residence on Monday.

/////////a country taht reacts to foreign media , whether it is the arrest of its own hero or the victim of a routine rape is not an independant country, it has no govt.

Re: # 8
a mind...

Those who do not receive Govt. service, should be exempted from such tax... I think the author is talking about service tax not income tax...I know large section of Indian population also dislike it, specially service tax on services, you do not accept...
What service Govt. is providing when you use your mobile phone? Rather, Govt. collects handsome amount of money to allocate bandwidth to mobile service providers...

It is amusing to read about someone feeling cheated by the Government. These same persons would feel privileged if he / she was to receive the citizen of a western country in exchange for paying taxes. Was it not Kennedy who said, “Ask not what your country can do for you, ask what you can do for your country? And we are cribbing about Rs. 15 in taxes. Its not as if the taxes paid on Mobile Phone usage is being taken to England by East India Company. You have the privilege of participating in the political process, choose your own people to the government and decide on how you would like this money to be more effective to all the people and not just yourself. You have been a lucky person to be educated in such a way that you are able to find employment in UAE.

Finally, remember that when oil prices hit $ 147 per barrel, the oil prices in Pakistan did not even go above PKR 100 (for comparison check the prices in Kenya where one litre was selling at USD 2).

Pakistan might not be perfect but it is because of people like us the imperfections exist. I think Pakistan can do without people like us.

Dear 2nd-nick, this is not a Pak vs. Dubai comparison.

Tell me one thing that Pakistanis will miss, if we reduced the size of our government to half. Or even one fourth.

The point I am trying to make is that in Pakistan, the citizens are paying through their nose for the government expenses. In return, we are rightful to expect services.

The situation of government services is so poor that we have stopped expecting any service from the government.

The schools don't educate. Gov hospitals dont heal. And Law and Order have become law and disorder.

In such a situation, where Government is only a drain on meagre resources of its citizens, why should we have a government.

Tayyab Rashid,

Author is quite right about doing his RR about not getting services, but he was quite simplistic in assuming that without taxes a country could be run.

He does pay tax on his rent in UAE unless he is not aware that if it is not him then his company is paying 15% tax on his rent.

He does pay into government kitty in UAE when getting his car registration, and so does his employer when he gets visa for him (government fee and health insurance fee). He also does not seem to know that whatever he uses in UAE is imported and 5% tax is levied on all imports.

Actually, the author is in quite impressed by the monarchy of UAE. I understand this...

On the other hand he could have argued that despite paying into UAE kitty, why is still not citizen. In civilised world (including Pakistan), tax paying citizen are afforded the right to citizenship after say 4 - 5 years. Can he get this right after living in dubai for say 50 years.. No; the day his job is over, he will be thrown out of country like a dirt bag.....

Relax...
I used to get enraged for something like this...
But one of my Scandinavian friend informed me that, it is 60% in their country...the smaller the country and more smaller is wealth distribution, Govt. have to collect all this, which you can tell "stupid tax"...

OBama introduces salary cap/

Comments by analysts,
///////////////////////////

Analysts said the plan could raise the likelihood of senior executives moving from firms who need government aid to those that don't.

"There is certainly a possibility of talent flight from the big firms to the smaller investment banks," said Lauren Smith, analyst at Keefe, Bruyette & Woods.

Fellow analyst, Mark Poerio, of law firm Paul Hastings said he agreed.

"If you have someone who was making well over $1m, and now they are capped at $500,000, it is very conceivable that they are going to look to go to a company that is not subject to those limitations," he said.

///////////////////
Among all things obama has done, this could be the most far reaching. It is precisely the high pay and the consequent risk taking that created the mess. If the present ones leave, a new culture could develop in the largest of teh financial institutions.

Great obama.
