Pakis would probably love a fil on old delhi only if there are nawab sahebs and begums occupying some big haveli in old delhi filled with dhimmi hindu servants.........

where instead of working their arse off for a honest living these Nawab sahebs are shown living off occupied and grabbed lands and buildings........

agree that its should be dilli che..i have some fond memories of staying in an old bania kothi in bhagirath palace..its narrow lanes, walk over to eat parathey..sultry faces of bannias sitting in shops seeling anything from plastic granules to integrated circuit chips..eat at neelm hotel neat ghantaghar, buy cheap knockoffs of phoren text-books from nayee sadak which was prolly new during shahjahans time, eat at moti mahal in daryaganj, kothis had joint families ruled by dadimas keeping a strict eye on those uppity 12-grade pass bahus whose husbands pretty much ignored them after 2 kids by age of 24 and spent their money in paharganj and bangkok...rajma chawal..

U know the name for Jalaluddin Akber (by British) was Jalabdim Echbar (in a letter written by King of Enlgnad to Mogul Emperor Akber). British cant spell these names so they had these corrupt names.

A joke but true. A south Indian I know pronounce it Sandaas Road for Sandhurst Road (Harbour area Mumbai). Corruption of names happen on all sides.

Shoaib,

The real name of the city is DEHLI. Period. British corrupted it to DELHI & the corruption continues. However the subalterns in Hindustan (Hindi-speaking states) call it Dilli as their sense of pronunciation is not that refined.

* If u happen to read Urdu or any records of pre-British era then u find that Dehli is the correct spelling. U can also find that in the surnames of ppl like Sadia Dehlvi.

British corrupted many names in British India and elsewhere. We have Trivendrum for Thiruvananthapuram. Rajahmundry for Rajamahendravaram. Ooty for Uthagamandalam. Tajore for Tanjavoor. Ceylon for Sri Lanka.

This is totally out of place but could anyone explain to me the etymologies of Dehli, Dilli and Delhi?

sufia,

I think your expections led you to this rotten conclusion. Mehra has achieved something different in this film. He didn't work on story as such, but he made Dehli a character of its own. I loved its shot sequence: breathtaking.
I agree with you on bad editting and Abhi-Sonam missing chemistry, but there is something different to it. It's Dehli, you know! Mehra has simply deviated from traditional Bollywood storytelling and I love him for that.

Kudos to Mehra!

Waheeda Rehman was just passable? The Waheeda Rehman of Guide and Chaudvin ka Chand and all of Guru Dutt's filmeN?

I don't think I can watch this at all if that's the case. :*(

Sufia,

Boring, poor video quality, inadequate background score, lengthy narration almost bordering on absurdity, Storyline is outright outlandish (kaala bunder), insipid editing, poor screenplay, dilution of Abhishek+Sonam's relation and what not.

The few good points are

Masakkali song, a couple of photography scenes capturing the aesthetic splendour of old Dehli. the underlying moral of the movie.
