Indo-European fusion culture started pre-christian era. Gandhara paintings of Ajanta and Elora caves are great artifacts of indo-european art. That vanished during musla rules and revived under british rule.

Iron, Is it really necessary to comment? Isn't it enuff to read and appreciate? Just curious.
Secondly there's no mention of Raja Ravi Varma, which is very sad.
British rule definitely brought a new school of painting whereas native painters were class of their own who're not recognised by the west till date (Ever heard of Mughal era painters who used gold & other metal powders to make (miniature)portraits of Mughal rulers on ivory? Btw, British were loitering in the Indian Subcontinent by then).
Yeah true that Victoria Memorial, Calcutta and Prince of Wales Museum in Bombay had a very good collection of Raj era paintings, mostly donated by Tatas.

Iron Mask:
"..However, I am holding my breath - and counting the number of interacts before this is reduced to the usual fare of Chowk!..." I agree with you.
I must say this is a very nice, thoughtful, insightful article which every one must read.

a great article! Totally different from the others on chowk (in its life). In this context, I was wondering if you have been to the Victoria Memorial in Calcutta. That place is one of the largest repositories of brit-indian art of that period. And it is impressive.
However, I am holding my breath - and counting the number of interacts before this is reduced to the usual fare of Chowk! From my experience this is one of lifes greatest constants (T)

Great article. Breaks new ground not just for chowk but also in terms of taking a broader look at the British in India beyond the standard political rut.
