April 5 (Reuters) - A suicide bomber blew himself up in a religious centre for minority Shi'ite Muslims in central Pakistan on Sunday, killing at least 17 people, a day after a deadly suicide attack in the capital, officials said.

Militant violence has surged in nuclear-armed Pakistan in the last two years, with numerous attacks on security forces and government and Western targets. Following is a timeline of major attacks in Pakistan since late 2007:

Oct. 19, 2007 - At least 139 people are killed in a suicide bomb attack on former prime minister Benazir Bhutto's motorcade as she is driven through the financial capital of Karachi at the end of eight years of exile. She was unhurt.

Dec. 21 - A suicide bomber kills at least 41 people in a mosque in Charsadda district, in the North West Frontier Province (NWFP), during the Muslim Eid festival prayers.

Dec. 27 - Bhutto is killed in a gun and bomb attack after a rally in northern garrison town of Rawalpindi. At least 16 others are killed.

Feb. 29, 2008 - A suicide attack on a police funeral kills 40 people in the turbulent northwestern district of Swat, 160 km (100 miles) from Pakistan's capital, Islamabad.

March 2 - At least 40 people are killed as suicide bomber attacks a gathering of tribal elders in Darra Adam Khel, a northwestern tribal region.

March 11 - Two suicide car bombers kill 24, most of them in an attack on a government security office in the country's second largest city, Lahore, near the Pakistan-India border.

March 15 - A bomb attack at an Italian restaurant in Islamabad, a favourite hangout for foreigners, kills a Turkish woman and wounds several others, including four FBI agents.

Aug. 19 - Suspected suicide bomber kills 23 in compound of hospital in Dera Ismail Khan in the NWFP, southwest of Islamabad, as Shi'ite Muslims protest a leader's killing.

Aug. 21 - Two suicide bombers blow themselves up outside the main defence industry complex in Wah, 30 km (18 miles) northwest of Islamabad. Nearly 50 people are killed and about 70 wounded.

Sept. 20 - Suicide truck bomb attack blamed on Islamist militants kills 55 people, destroys Marriott hotel in Islamabad.

Dec. 5 - A car bomb kills at least 20 people and wounds scores in Peshawar, capital of NWFP.

Dec. 28 - At least 30 people are killed in a suicide car bomb blast at a polling station near Buner, in the NWFP, during a by-election for a provincial assembly.

Feb. 5, 2009 - At least 24 people are killed in a suspected suicide bombing near Shi'ite mosque in Dera Ghazi Khan, central Pakistan.

Feb. 20 - Suicide bomber kills 27 people and wounds 65 in an attack on a funeral procession for a Shi'ite Muslim killed a day earlier in Dera Ismail Khan.

March 3 - Gunmen attack a bus carrying Sri Lanka's cricket team outside a Lahore stadium, killing seven people, including six policemen and a driver, and wounding six of the cricketers and a British coach.

March 27 - A suicide bomber kills 37 people when he blows himself up in a crowded Pakistani mosque near the Afghan border. Among the dead are 14 policemen and paramilitary soldiers.

March 30 - Militants armed with guns and grenades storm a police training centre in Lahore killing eight recruits, wounding scores and holding off police and troops for eight hours. The attack is claimed by Pakistani Taliban leader Baitullah Mehsud. Four militants are killed and three arrested.

April 5 - A suicide bomber blows himself up in a religious centre for minority Shi'ite Muslims in Chakwal in central Pakistan. At least 17 people are killed and around 11 seriously wounded. The attack comes a day after a suicide attack in Islamabad killed eight paramilitary troops in Islamabad.

...yes, this is definitely true....and there is widespread national agreement on this....an example of this, is that taliban cannot even dream of getting elected....what to talk of taliban, even mainstream relatively sane religious parties can barely win 1-3% of the seats in pakistan.....

take a look at the govt. people elected in nwfp - anp and ppp - the two most secular parties in pakistan......

.....the point i am making, or the two points i am making, is that pakistan will never be able to fight the taliban, if the fight is viewed as an american fight......plain and simple.....taliban are hated; americans are hated even more......

.....point no. 2 is that the number of civilians being kiiled by american drones and by pakistan military actions, is only making the taliban phenomenon stronger......they are gaining sympathizers.......

........people are in two minds....they hate the taliban for flogging the girl and for suicide bombings.....but they respect them for fighting the usa in afghanistan.....when pakistan fights taliban, as a us ally, people don't know whether to support pakistan military or to oppose it.......

when the taliban say, so many innocent civilians were killed in a us drone attack, and they say, in retaliation, they will kill police and army in suicide bombings, people don't know which way to go......

so, there is only one way to take on the taliban.....and that is to nullify their raison d etre of the taliban......i.e. stop supporting the usa, in any way form or manner......force them to stop drone attacks...and if that cannot be enforced, then at least not support it......

a girl flogged by taliban is bad, but the same girl killed by a usa drone is much worse......

......once pakistan govt. is seen to be out of gwot, i am quite sure, there will be a drastic decrease, if not disappearance of suicide attacks in pakistan (they only started after pakistan sent forces into fata)........this will stablize the intellegensia, and will keep them from migrating......

......this will, however, not remove the taliban from swat etc.....as much of that is thuggery and nothing else......

that is when pakistan govt. will be able to get the whole country, all the soldiers etc. behind this war.......that is when the taliban will be weak, and that is when pakistan should take on the taliban, on its terms, for its interests, and not for the usa's......

i.e. if they need to be bombed, it should only be done by pakistan, and for pakistan's interests.......

otherwise, trust me, this war will be lost in pakistan......pakistan will be nothing but a cycle of drone attacks and suicide bombings.....

to give you an idea of what is happening now......i have been informed (hopefully incorrectly) the area around the office i go to has been declared a suicide target.....now if that office goes, the cream of pakistan's professional technical elite will be gone.......

this is what everyone in pakistan is going through.......not just me.......

after that, their families and others like them will leave pakistan, in a hearbeat, with or without taliban......then we will have nothing left but tahmad and hamidm mian encouraging eveyone from pakistanis to indians to americans in fighting the taliban, from the comforts of their keyboards......

Is it just a coincidence that as long as Captain Clueless was living "comfortably abroad (read America)" (as he now accuses other expatriates of), he was a rather passionate advocate of the American invasion of Afghanistan (in fact the man wanted to give up his career in IT and lead American troops into the country). When he was kicked out to Canada, he began sounding disillusioned (but not totally against) of what America was doing. Now that he's back in Pakistan, he's become an outright opponent of the America's Afghanistan strategy?
