I agree with Taji on the views of this article. We like to shift blame on the West for all our problems. The first step to solving them is to accept they exist because of us and only we have the power to solve them. The Western culture is different than ours but it is neither bad nor good, it just is. Like language or religion or color or flavor...they just are and they work differently for different people. For every short-coming in the western culture there is an equivalent issue with our own!

Dear Asadi
"under those circumstances, to assimilate is to surrender to servitude and slavery...."
Adaptability is a sign of strength but vulgar ego makes you miserable. You do not become a slave by following rules.

Masadi #94, ask the Chinese whether modernity is evil or not. Let me think, what force has lifted more people out of back breaking poverty than any other? What force is responsible for China's growing economic power, as well as India's? Let me tell you, it's certainly not the force of religion, traditional values, communism, or whatever you think should replace modernity.

Thank you for removing the baseless red-flag on post #94

In addition to #96, if you (chowkstaff) determine that it has been redflagged just to promote censorship, I would urge you to penalize such false redflaggers by banning them. Thank you

I am wondering why #94, written in quite professional and politer form has been redflagged? Chowk staff please take note and have a nice day.

It is not fair to single out the Pakis, though some being “good Muslims”, they are the worst offenders since they have more ‘religious’ baggage from home. Other migrants from non-European countries have similar problems too. Again the educational background of migrants plays a crucial part in this context.
Assimilation is not the right word as what is required is integration and not standing out like the proverbial sore thumb in the West, where ironically the migrants flock to, in which ever way they can; across the seas even in a leaky boat.
Imagine spending mega dollars to obtain admission in a training school for cooking or hair dressing courses etc, to spend few years in the developed country in order to qualify for permanent residency certificate.
No, it can not be true that they wish the demise of these countries—that is akin to killing the goooose which lays…….many many social benefits, but they want to construct their Churches!

Fouz in #2 to assimilate or not to assimilate is not a choice the immigrant can make but depends on the social structure of the receiving country; first generation immigrants those that come with more social capital do much better than their so called assimilated kids who are assimilated based on the inferior status the structure allows their kind of people- under those circumstances, to assimilate is to surrender to servitude and slavery....
Mr Cheema: Modernity for the white elite has meant freedom and riches, for the vast majority of whites it has meant loss of family, humanity and emotions and for the colored folk it has meant underdevelopment and death. So either convert all the people in our parts of the world into the elite or don't sell this modernity dream that has only brought us death and destruction.

Yeah and you have to work 3 times as much to get half the praise the white man would get, and treat the women 50 times as well while the white man treats them as dirt but they still go after him....get a hold of the status notebook in the white man's society and you will know just why they don't love you back, you are way down in the hierarchy they have set, and from way down there you can never get "love" that is shared only between equals, otherwise it is a one way lane. If you were to read the literature on interracial marriage you'd note how this compensation of status occurs with white women marrying a higher class when interracially etc, a society based on dividing humanity hierarchically is not the type of society in which love can be shared.

During my school days, I never felt this... In my village, we, gang of boys used to fight with gang of girls in school, even upto 11th standard...then I had to prepare for exams and after 2 years, I found that many of my class mates (girls) ended up as Nurshing Trainee...I was surprised to see their parents allowing their daughters join such course, rather than encouraging in higher study....it was eye opener for me...One girl I know, was realy brilliant, was supposed to use stethoscope than wearing nurshing appron...neither our teachers helped her, nor me...and his brothers were also studying; so , she had to take this easy path...I am sure, you will find many such instance in most part of India...if the boy and girl both in a family have to go for higher study, the girl has to sacrifice...fortunately, now, it is changing...
