I appreciate the comments and feedback.
We are planning an event on Jan 8, 2010 to mark what students until a few years ago always commemorated as 'Martyrs Day'.
For updates, details and other material, please see http://www.drsarwar.wordpress.com.

Beena- thanks for reminding us that Pakistan has had great progressive leaders like Dr. Sarwar. I remember coming to your house with Khalid Hameed several times to collect funds for NSF and he was always so kind and gentle. And, when I wrote a series of articles on student movement in Pakistan his guidance was so crucial. We were so lucky to have him around.

ana,
I think it is YOU, who is anti-male.
If you do not agree, I suggest you please reread your own posts, or at least check your head, or preferably, do both together, at once.

Re: # 21
Mr. India,
You are right. The medical education system is in the hold of a few protectionists, who do not like to see many doctors around. Combined with this corruption, nepotism, religious/caste bigotry and protectionism, is the lack of a teaching culture. This is unlike, for eg., China, and is one of the main reasons why China has progressed far beyond India.
incidentally, Chinese doctors earn far less income per capita and there might be a lesson in this somewhere.
nkg, you have raised a gender issue.
3 points :
1. The awareness of mens rights has grown. Only a few days ago, another mens rights organization was born, called All India Mens Welfare Association ( google for more ). In another few decades, surely this will become a permanent feature
2. However, these groups, however essential, are neither well funded, nor show the enthusiasm of a womens group for any length of time ( probably because they are not well funded ). Unfunded Mens groups may not be able yet, to conduct brainwashing 'sessions', to sympathize with women as a gender, that women groups conduct with much publicity.
Besides, mens rights is usually ridiculed by the media pushed by 'commercial' interests. The adverts on TV today, ridicule males and routinely show women as the more intelligent of the species. There is hardly an Indian cinema that does not have a male comedian 'deservingly' being whipped by a woman ( or the general public )
3. Women are scoring more in education/employment. Unfortunately, this is because of the wide spread propaganda that 'Boys WILL study poorly because they have 'other' activities'. This myth is being spread like poison by the unthinking media and in schools, thus demoralising the boys to believe that that are not capable ( and 'capable' only if they are not 'boys' ). This belief is becoming reality. Whereas, as we all know, boys have, and WILL perform much better than girls.
People are arguing that 'women make better doctors, engineers, etc.' These views need to be tempered with some facts, such as the public tend to complain more against male professionals. This is due to sexiam, and not incompetence. Like Ageism, sexism is a revolting, but accepted norm in the western media.
Preferential treatment to women is an insult to men because its basic assumption is outrageous and does not recognise the natural and social disadvantages that men face.
Physical weakness is a boon for women; a curse for men and is just One aspect of life. There are other forms of strengths - intuition, manipulative ability, sexual power - and on all these women score over men. They know how to control the physically stronger men with these powers. A strong man is on his knees when he meets a lady with a sexy figure. And many in the recruitment department do exactly this!
The 'Equal Opportunities' must exist for male students, as much as it did for female students 1 decade ago ( even now ).

NKG:
Almost 45 years ago, there were only two women in Delhi College of Engineering class of 1965. One was in Civil Engineering and the other was in Mechanical Engineering. You need to re-examine that Women were not allowed in Mechanical Engineering.

Its a shame people like him aren't around anymore, with the new generation being retarded and all outlook is kinda dim.

Dr. Sarwar was a lucky man to have Zakia by his side through journey of life. Dr. Sarwar's presence will be felt in Karachi for a long time. At every leftwing meeting and mushaira, he will be missed and remembered.

GPs are rarest of the species now a days in urban india...In Kolkata, we still find such doctors, thogh they are very old and thinning...May be they are carrying legacy of Dr. Bidhan Roy...I knew one such person, Dr. Shetal Ghosh, who expired couple of years back...

you are presenting one side of the whole story...
even couple of decades back, women were not allowed to enroll in mechanical engineering, mining engineering and even now, they are not allowed in armed forces in combat roles...how many women are recruited in police and para-military forces? how many women are put up as candidates in state assemblies and parliement by political parties? until recently, women were not recruited in transport sectors too...the list is very long...better keep your eyes open, before putting such comments...
provided the opportunity, girls outshine boys in secondary education...but somehow, they loose significantly in higher education...do you feel biological reason is the only factor behind such massive degrade? In india, we still have enough space, where we can empower women in formal sectors like teaching, banking and finance, clerical jobs in Govt. departments....

Excuse me Parthaab? You're the one who keeps bringing up your "WAKE UP MALES, SPEAK UP!" into every fora, especially this one where it's hardly appropriate. Then again, no one is ever appropriate here.
And I am not an androphobe. Nor do I don't go from article to article raging about hatred towards men, or why women might still be at a disadvantage in many parts of the world because of male privilege.
You need help. Not to be ridiculed because of your constant rantings. They really have become a joke at Chowk.
Beena, I apologize for the detour here. I will ignore this troubled man from now on.
