Dear Sir,
Your articles are interesting and objective. Please continue writing in this fashion.
But the waste of scarce national resources in this fashion does not speak too well of the Government of Pakistan. I do not know if we are much better in India.

Mr. Bhutta,
I found the account of your father`s dedication to the field of education very moving and inspirational. The world needs more people like him. May God bless him and his family.

Re: MORE BILLI KAY GALAY MAIN.......
Last night I met a young fellow from Pakistan. Inevitably, as the sun follows the moon, the discussion turned towards Pakistan. His name is Mukhtar. He said he has coined a new phrase.
Guilt-servicing-- as in debt-servicing.
In gatherings-be they in Pakistan, here or on the net---we are found indulging in guilt-servicing.
What is predictably worse, these discussiions tend to shoot straight into the yonder.Like your Heaven-- fifth or sixth or seventh--who knows!
Discussion.Discussion.Discussion.
(Problem) Identification, (Cause) Analysis, (Possible)Soultions and (remedial) Action is needed.
Inevitably, as it is witnessed even on the Chowk the farthest we venture is step 1.seldom to step2 and rarely to step 3.
I have to leave now. Will come back later.
P.S. Pervez Sahib, If you are near the beltway,
you should look up Tariq Hussain. He has some interesting ideas and solutions.

My reaction to your article was a now familiar sense of cold rage. I was about to write down all my theories about the Why that you asked. They were addressed very well by tow or three replies to your article. The cultural, political and economic reasons are well-known and very well expressed. We consequently exist in a vaccum of fatalism and fear. I think a lot of times, our fears are misplaced and we are not quite as powerless as we imagine. One can in a small way fight the system.
Regarding why we react to issues of women, food and religion with such passion but refrain from any reaction to the real rights and wrongs; I think the man on the street doesn`t even find out when he was exploited. The common man is full of fear and anger. An obvious wrong like a torn page of a book he has never read but which is somehow the key to all his pain is comprehensible and his reaction is suitable. A woman running away with a man is an outrage to his dignity and is comprehensible. Some University`s foul-up is incomprehensible. After all, can he ever go and attend it? Does he know who to trust? How does he know if Dr Pervez is on the right side? He is alienated from all power and decision making as a citizen. His concerns of food and children reign supreme. He hopes God will give him food if he is good and does Jihad for him.

I don`t get it! Corruption is corruption by any
other name. In some countries, we have the
``lobbying`` institution, which is a form of legalized corruption. In other countries, we have the ``illegal`` corruption version. The outcome is
the same on society. Why are we such hypocrites that we belabor and critcize the unkosherized version?????

RE: BILLI KAAY GALAY MAIN GHANTA
Rad and others. More words. More talk.
Revolution? (In our unique dictionary it means transfer of power from one un-elected group to another).
Neither as individuals nor as group do we have what it takes. That spark is missing. Forget all that bull about Commitment,Faith, Ideology et all. (Exceptions excepted)!

Interesting article.
True there have been `` like a tidal wave burning cars and smashing shops `` like mobs happen over Kashmir, anti India, punjab, whatever. But i don`t see that those problems have gone anywhere as a result.
It is fashionable to blame things on apathy. But personally i think that there comes a point in time where the situation is beyond simple protest and condemnation. What is needed is a revolution. And a revolution needs a leader - a full time commited job. A full-time activits with a mission and a will to lead.
So my question to you, Dr Hoodboy, is - are you going to be that person?
Rad
p.s. Many of us go through life thinking that we will do something worthwhile someday, when we have time. But I think that if instead each of us simply decided to fight at least one battle in our lifetime - just one - to the end, we could make a huge difference. Rather than simply feeling apathetically-guilty-helpless and making a half-ass effort at each war-torn battlefield we see. Just pick one.

Ordinarily, congradulations were in order on such an expose. But I will refrain.
Pervez Sahib this is not an isolated incident. Can we honestly name one government institution that has not been pillaged, plundered and robbed by any/all governments in recent Pakistani history?
What frustrates more is the apathy. Nobody cares. Nobody gives a damn. Yet everyone
(in power) talks.
Truth (as in Supreme), honesty, submission (as in Islam), purpose (as in life) all have been discussed to death. None exists. I would not be surprised if the few remaining symbols will fall down too. Perhaps one of these days we will learn that Abdul Sattar Edhi is a child molester
with millions tucked away in Cayman.
If and when I read such an expose my sense of personal bewilderment will lead me to the peak
of my Mount Everest of Hypocracy. And I will soar away to where I know not.
P.S. As an aside, I Would like to thank Chowkwallahs-both staff and contributors-for this meeting of ways. Allah re zor-e-qlum aur ziyadah...

I`d like to express my admiration for Dr.Hoodbhoy`s candor. It`s easy for us to sit in the US and talk big. We know no one can touch us here. It takes greater courage to live in Pakistan and still be so forthright.
Is this Dr.Alvi the same one who was a professor and dean at NED? If yes, what a shameful irony!
Regards,
MNI
