I emapthize with authors predicament, nonethless, we have become more productive in this 24 hour period, than ever before in the history of man.
Whether that translates into a better quality of life, - that we should leave to the sociologists out there.

As a professional, whose job it is to speed up those microprocessors, amazingly the numbers whiz by at light speed. I started out with a 10 Mhz machine - less than a decade ago and now am working on developing a 1000 MHz processors. And the impact is mind boggling. - For the first time, the information age has started impacting the life of the consumer - one can make travel arrangements, stock trades, banking transactions- all in the comfort and safety of the home. Just take this a step further , in the not too distant future we will have virtual libraries ( if not already), virtual shopping malls and even virtual workplaces - Improving efficiency both in terms of useless transportation as well as elimination of the middle man in consumer transactions.

In technological terms, this is the Mother Lode of all the gold rushes that is
about to come, - it will fundamentally impact our lifestyles, far more drastically than we realize.
So how does the 5Mhz man cope in the era of gigahertz machines. Heck! as if I know, - i am too busy squueezing the last pico second from my gate count. My bonus depends on that damn Mhz.
