As JohnnySitar mentions below, Page got the idea

for the song while travelling through North Africa.

The beauty of this land -the unending sky

and vast stretches of desolate land has been

beautifully captured in the film ``Sheltering Sky``.

check it out.

Very insightful and humurous article.

youre right about the content of Zep music. It was never very politically motivated.

As Robert Plant said once in an interview,``Its the music for the music``

Bands like U2 and the Beatles of course have that missionary fire raging inside them.

(dont be in any doubt the Beatles still exist... they release something every 2 or 3 years)

At the time Zep wrote Kashmir they were very much into travelling and sampling different types of music.

Page and Plant both travelled extensively through Morocco.

Im sure Jimmy and Robert know the difference between Arabic and Indian music. They recorded in Bombay, India in 1972 (never released officially) with Indian musicians. That was before they ever went to Morocco and listened to the folk musicians there.

In my humble opinion Kashmir is painted as the ideal place of beauty and solitude that everyone searches for in their life.

I dont think it necessarily means the disputed territory located in the subcontinent. Just a destination all travellers look for.

I think they also want to emphasize the journey rather than the final destination. As I said before,at the time Jimmy and Robert were criscrossing Morocco like nobodys business.

Id better end before I start sounding too pretentious. :)

Incidentally Led Zep is second only to the Beatles in cumulative album sales ( more than 100 million) and Physical Graffiti on its own sold over 9 million copies in North America.

wow, Jimmys finally been recognized by the UN

Thank you for a wonderful article. I think Im going to dust off the old Zep bootlegs and blast em out loud 70`s style.

Love to all and Eid mubarak

Very interesting!!!
Reminded me to look at my old musical stash to
dig up ``Stairway to Heaven`` once again. Just the
greatest song of the Rock Era??
My family gives me strange looks when I put
Led Zeppelin on these days so I have to do it on
the sly.
On Kashmir, well someday cannabis will rule, but for now the violence has to stop.

Ras

ps: I can`t resist

``Your head is humming and it won`t go
in case you didn`t know
The piper`s calling you to join him.
Dear lady can you hear the wind blow
And did you know
Your stairway lies on the whispering wind``
(From Led Zeppelin-- Stairway to Heaven)
