what i simply fail to understand about ppl like yourself is why claim to follow any religion at all
denouce it openly
but most ppl of ur sort r simply afraid to do so
if u cliam to be a muslim
at least bother ot study the quran
wht u mention as openess and culture and tolerance
has been expressly forbidden by allah
and follow thw commands of allah
if u dont like them then
be brave enough to denounce islam
dont lead a confused life

Bina, I enjoyed your article very much.
Rehan, I agree with virtually everything you`ve written in reply #63. Whilst I also believe that it is perfectly possible for a man and a woman to have a platonic relationship, this only reflects their external actions and not the thoughts and feelings which they harbour in their minds and in their hearts. As far as the latter two are concerned, no matter how hard one tries, I am convinced that the fact that one is talking to a member of the opposite sex is always floating about somewhere in one`s mind. It usually affects what one says and the way one says it. I guess this is a variation on the `When Harry Met Sally` theory which Billy Crystal propounds. Maybe men will be more readily prepared to agree with me but women will claim not to.
Oh, I was absolutely mortified when registering with Chowk so that I could reply to Bina Shah`s article. You may all be amused to read that my first preference for a user name (`Mehboob` which is my real name for heaven`s sake !) was deemed invalid since it contains an obscenity which `others might find offensive`. I suppose even computers can`t get sex off their minds !
Regards,
Mehboob

Babar: I agree with everything that you said, the article was written a bit tongue-in-cheek but I did pick up on the sadness that you describe, and felt it too on their behalf, even though I was only a visitor for a night. I find British Pakistanis a fascinating lot, perhaps this piece is a sort of paean to them at the same time as it makes fun of the need for marriage that is sometimes instilled in us from our elders, culture etc. The title is because I wrote a piece called Marriage Trap a while ago and it seemed to make sense to call this part 2!

Statesman (62):
Paki, though derived from Pakistani, is a derogatory label that Brit Aryans use for Indians, Pakistanis, Bangladeshis or any other brownie. Wearing sleeveless blouse and short skirts does not immune one from being an Paki, in fact, it shows more skin and makes one more visible as a Paki. As a brain washed and self-deprecated community, we use Paki for self-identity. Or may be we are very humble people before our masters.
By the way, in the Middle East (especially in Saudi Arabia) alien brownies are called Rafiq (busboy not friend or companion as in Urdu) and anything white is a Khawaja (erudite). Americans are much more flamboyant. I have heard Camel Jockey a few times but Sand Niger might be the final choice. The prefix of the F-word is optional. This is a worldwide humiliation.
I would love to translate Punjabi to Urdu and English but it removes the cultural and the poetic quality. Even Nusrat lost some of his charm in Urdu.

Ranja Ranja kardi ma tey appay Ranja hoi
All I got from you peice and postings that the special one has to be a Brit Paki or a Paki Brit. Hey, how about Salman Rushdi! As much a Brit as a Paki could ever be. Paki and Brit combined into one unique package. Not to mention a good writer like you. Not really!

Actually Cynthia Inghraham Ahmeds story is not new,Almost all marriages between American gals, with muslims from either Mid East OR Pakistan end up, with the regularity of a time clock. After end of 13 years the hormonal surge are gone,& what is the marriage worth hanging on to when it was based on lust, physical, attractions, youngness etc.
I have found white men put there live ins girl friend put children from previous marriage in to Oven & roast them to death in my town(heart of America)Also in my town i find a lame american girl sits in her pakistani husbands apartment doing nothing being freeloading. The poor chap has to do both inside as well outside the house.I feel sorry for these men who end up carrying the burden of ``gori``all there life& if she could, she leaves them by 40 to 45 when ``Ahmedo is no longer the same,he doesnt give freedom to women,so ugly, see me i am the victim,i dont know how i passed my 13 married years tolerating this man, until i cant take any more-i want divorce``When i will marry first thing i will do is kill my mother so that my wife can go in my mothers funeral,so i can know upfront whether or not she likes my country, people, customs, culture ,ways!

Re: Nighat
You haven`t struck any nerves, Nighat. I was simply out of town for a few days. It impresses me that you claim to know so much about people and situations without really knowing anything at all. Your flirtations with me (albeit amusing at first) are simply ineffective. Please stop spinning stories.

I expected, and hoped for, the lesser sorts to take offence to my post re the Nighat-bashers, and the real rats to raise their ugly and disgusting little heads. I succeeded in identifying you. More rats to follow?

Treza: Is this supposed to be ``The Marriage Trap: The Remix``? I like it. Perhaps Puff Daddy would be willing to lay down a track for it, or, my other favorite, Talvin Singh. Next time I`m in London...
Nighat: Competition? I`d rather stand back and watch you make a fool of yourself in public. The honor`s all yours, kid!
