Asif Naqshbandi #56,
Toba astagfarullah!
In your shariah/hadith-loving/etc etc fundamental Islam, it`s haram to talk about such things with members of the opposite sex who aren`t married to you.
Please refrain from such ``shaitaani`` postings.

You said that Islam encouraged frank discussion of sexuality and that Rumi had written eight books on the topic. Then you said that it is unbecoming to talk of such matters publicly, as a Muslim. Sounds contradictory to me. If the religion is open about it as are other religious people, why should only Mahim not be open about masturbation???

Re: Latif Chappu, #36
Where did you get this? If you wrote it, you are a genius (seriously.) I liked it so much that I copied it and e-mailed it to few people. It is not only humorous but is stunning in its straightforwardness, unlike that obscure ``Porn for Girls`` that beats around the bush (excuse the pun) and doesn`t get anywhere.

Hi Mahim!...I am not a big fan of poetry in free verse (whether in Urdu or English or Farsi or any other language) preferring rhyming prose but i do not see what the hullaballoo is all about just because your subject was about an activity which many in our community indulge in but do not like to talk about it; and though it is naive of me, i never thought that muslim girls from pakistan would wank off...)
Personally, I think that it is not vey becoming to discuss such private matters in public but what you do in the privacy of your own bedroom is your own business...;-) As for those people who are saying/himting that you are not a Muslim becoz you admit to masturbating (or certainly writing about it)...come on! Traditional Islam, unlike modern paki society, has discussed all matters sexual openly and frankly as being a complete code of life it legislates on all things and sex is a major human activity. The blessed ulama have also discussed this matter and the general ruling is that though it is generally not encouraged, and considered haram, it is considered better than doing zina (but inferior to controlling ones appetite by fasting) and the Hanafis have said that in some circumstances, if one is weak, it might even be necessary (if for example you have a lot of sexual energy and no halal means of dissipating it --i.e. a husband) or if your hisband/wife is far away from you and you feel the need for sex then it is better for you to wank than to commit adultery. And Allah knows best.
Yraditional Islam is v. candid about female sexuality (just read the hadith!) and some of the greatest ulama have written treatises on how to enhance ones love-making and the various positions, techniques, etc.
The great Jalal uddin Suyuti rahmatullah alayhi wrote EIGHT separate books on this topic!
The great Proof of Islam Imam Ghazzali discusses in a v. candid way how to ensure that the woman reaches orgasm as well so as not to deny her her right...subhan Allah!
It is our shame that we do not KNOW Islam; unfortunately, the trend amongst our so-called elite and ruling class is to mock islam and its ulama based on an insufficient and biased view (aped from the western media)!
To summarise, you seem like a talented writer and that is good :-) But it is better to not discuss such private matters in public as a Muslim....
welcome to Chowk!!! And may Allah give you a Muslim husband who can satisfy all yuor sexual needs (and you his)!!! That is also a part of being a good Muslim. (BTw in shar`iat it is allowed to wank off your partner till he/she comes. A person asked Imam Abu Hanifa about it and he [rahmatullah alayhi] replied that it is allowed and may those who do it get great reward for it.)

Mahim
I guess your commnet re contributions to society in your earlier piece - was seen in a hallowed light. Nice peom - but frankly without the suggestive title - would not have been able to make the connection. Thouhg I wonder what people`s reaction would have been had this poem been written by a man and was titled ``Porn for Boys``.

Mahim:
That was a nice little gem of a poem. Don`t worry about the naysayers. Most of the time they are either incomprehensible (get help studebaker), and at others they are akin to the corner mosque mullah who find Islam in danger at the mere sight of a sleeveless female. Maybe they should be given a map by Idrisi and allowed to set sail in their tiny rowboats to discover new Islands.........

Re: Mahim and
``As for my comment that I would like to help Pakistani society, how do you know I am not already?``
Agreed. But why mention it so specifically as if you are going out of your way to make a contribution of epic proportions. Islam suggests that one helps another fellow, in need or contributes something to somebody the left hand should not learn of what was given through the right hand.
Creativity without context is a pitfall. You feel ever so proud to represnt Pakistan at some nameless ``canadian`` university, by presenting sub par, unoriginal, poems, which have no literaray basis at all. Serves to show the rather dismal taste and standards of such a forum.
This has nothing to do with religion or taboos. The diatribe you are being forced to listen to is on account of your heavy-handedness and arrogance in dealing with the replies; not for a moment taking the time to realise that your masterpiece might not actually be worth of being called literature much less art.
Perhaps it would be advisable to not wear you heart on a sleeve in terms of contributing to Pakistani society, while juxtaposing your adolescent cravings, onto unsuspecting readers. Granted according to you everybody wanks; Not everybody wants to glorify it to new and previously unscaled heights of notoriety,
Sincerely,
Asim

Thank you for the info.
Nothing is a ``theory``.This ``methodology`` of finding & reporting facts somehow elevates the university type to a brahmin/mullah/priest level.
Some of them are knowingly intellectually corrupt, which thus aggravates their crime. This ignorance coupled with authority is the greatest curse upon us today.
Anybody, even the most ``uneducated``/``backward`` can hold an opinion/conviction.If the ``educated`` one does not understand something it is not anybodys fault.
This is simply written to chip away at the tyrrany & hegemony that our ``learned`` ones exercise.

Idrisi was no doubt the greatest cartographer. His maps are still amazingly accurate/detailed.Incidentally they also show the American continent.
Columbus got hold of some maps from Portugal, which really had become a navigational hub because of Prince Henry`s deep interest in the subject.
In those days map makers were a wile bunch(they had to) because they did not want illegal copies of their efforts made.So they incorporated either extra info or omitted some key info to lead astray.
It was important to have the cartographer around to ``explain`` the map once a voyage charter was granted & the map-maker duly acknowledged.
Columbus was lucky to run into one of these & he ran away to Spain with them-----ever fearful for his life!

And just as I feel my
end is near
when I almost merge
with the two onscreen...
...you are there,
banging
my

down.
so what did that person find you with....coke,pepsi bottle.....before you ended up in Jinnah hospital?

Thanks Bina.
Personal attacks and ribald permutations on my poem seem to be very popular at Chowk.
I did have the good fortune to study abroad. That should not be held against me or anyone else. As for my comment that I would like to help Pakistani society, how do you know I am not already? And why does everyone take it upon themselves to judge my supposed social contributions or lack thereof?
I do not wonder how each poem `helps` Pakistan when I write it. I just write as the words come.
As Pakistanis we certainly do not need the awards of Canadian universities to justify or applaud our writing. But I am proud of the fact that I did represent Pakistan in that way at the University. I used some poems to enlighten people I met there about Pakistani Culture. Why are some comments so xenophobic then? Xenophobia does not equal patriotism. it means narrow mindedness.
Irving Layton might have written what many consider obscene poems, but sending work in for an award doesn`t mean you have to write like Irving Layton himself.

I agree.
But it is poetess` responsibility (more than reader`s)to be explicit about her intentions. Her comment #8 in her last post makes it very political and `infringing on religion` issue. She must understand that if there was any opposition/critique to her work, it was due to the quality of her work and to some extent the content (not the political and religious side (there aint none)of it but the decency). She must not snap back at her readers and blame them for being biasd against her.
