ABCD

`ABCD,` about an East Indian American family, is one of several ethnic films hoping for a wider appeal.

By JON MATSUMOTO, SPECIAL TO THE LOS ANGELES TIMES

When Krutin Patel co-wrote the script to his film ``ABCD`` in 1993, the most prominent East Indian in American pop culture was probably Apu from the television series ``The Simpsons.`` Eight years later, that animated convenience store clerk is still the most recognizably East Indian character in American television and film.

http://www.latimes.com/entertainment/printedition/calendar/la-000094888nov29.story

The paucity of East Indian American representation in the popular arts in this country is a primary reason why Patel feels so passionately about his independently made drama, which captures the intriguing dynamics of an East Indian American family.

``ABCD,`` which opens Friday at selected theaters, is one of a handful of new films involving rarely seen immigrant American characters and scenarios. ``The Debut,`` which is currently in theaters, and ``American Adobo,`` which is slated to open in Los Angeles on Jan. 23, are both small movies reflecting Philippine American life. A coming-of-age film about a Philippine American teenager, ``The Debut`` opened in Los Angeles in early October and has grossed more than $1 million. Home to large Philippine American populations, the Los Angeles and San Francisco areas have accounted for 90% of the film`s box-office success, according to its distributor, 5 Card Productions.

All three of these films deal in some way with ethnic minority immigrants and their children trying to reconcile traditional cultural values with very different American attitudes.

In ``ABCD,`` two grown children react differently to the expectations of their loving but very traditional Indian-born mother (Madhur Jaffrey). Older brother Raj (Faran Tahir) tries to conform to her wishes. He has a very respectable job as a Manhattan accountant and is engaged to a traditional Indian woman he does not entirely love. His younger sister Nina (Sheetal Sheth) rebels against conservative Indian mores by dating non-Indian men and by embracing a sexually promiscuous lifestyle.

Having emigrated from India to the U.S. at age 8, Patel is familiar with the difficulty of trying to straddle the line between two cultures. Like many men with Indian immigrant parents, he felt the pressure to land a white-collar job. To appease his parents` concerns about his desire to enter the uncertain field of filmmaking, he majored in both film and finance at New York University. While he hopes to transition into filmmaking full time, Patel currently works in the marketing department at the Food Network in New York.

Ironically, previous screenings of the film have indicated that ``ABCD`` is unlikely to be fully embraced by the Indian American community, particularly by that segment which espouses conservative cultural values.

``The strongest reaction to the film has come, believe it or not, from non-Indian Americans,`` remarks Patel, who also directed and co-produced ``ABCD.`` ``There are those in the Indian American community who don`t want to see its dirty laundry hung in public. The portrayal of characters like Nina [makes them uncomfortable]. They want to keep their heads in the sand. In the Indian community the film will raise a few eyebrows. That`s a good thing because there will be debate about it. We tend to be a community that doesn`t communicate in regard to some of these harder issues.``

Nina is the film`s most complex character. She rebels against the sexual conservatism of her ethnic culture. Yet her contrary ways also keep her from finding the emotional intimacy in her romantic relationships that will lead to happiness. When she finds herself falling in love with an Indian man she reluctantly meets on a date arranged by her mother, she is disinclined to commit to the relationship.

Patel says the Nina character has sparked much debate during question-and-answer sessions following screenings of the film. Some Indian Americans have found her to be an inaccurate representation of their people. Others have found her to be very real.

Patel recalls, ``One of my memories of showing this at a film festival was a British Indian girl telling me, `That`s my life up there on screen.` I was like, `Wow, thank you.` Nina really translated to her experience.``

``ABCD,`` whose relatively polished look belies its modest $200,000 budget, couldn`t have been made without the financial help of Patel`s friends and relatives.

``After my parents came to America, they helped other Indian immigrants who subsequently came to this country,`` explains Patel, who spent about five years raising money to make his film. ``Some 30 years later I needed financial backing and they turned around and gave me that help.`` Only a few of the Indian American investors asked to read the script.

Moviegoing is hugely popular in India. But Patel believes there would be little interest there in a serious-minded film about an Indian American family. Bollywood, as the Indian film industry is known, generally produces escapist melodramas.

The hope is that films like ``ABCD`` and ``American Adobo`` will find audiences among independent film lovers and in specific minority communities in the increasingly multiethnic U.S. Patel says there are sizable Indian populations in most major American cities. ``ABCD`` is slated to open in 15 to 20 markets in North America.

Non-Indian audiences may not fully understand a few of the cultural subtleties of the film and some viewers may not empathize with Raj`s possible encounter with workplace discrimination. But Patel feels he has fashioned a movie that has mainstream allure.

``I always wanted to make sure that the movie appealed beyond Indian people,`` Patel insists. ``As we started showing it at festivals so many people would say to me, `I`m not Indian, but so much of this film I can relate to my own family.` That`s when I realized that the film really has a universal appeal. My writing and directing style is going for a certain realism. If you make characters that are human and real they will transcend ethnic lines.``

[I respect the GOOD doctor Shankar.]

Yeah. He hates the fact that he is a Hindu, or at least he claims so. That ought to be music to your ears. So, go ahead, respect this man (if he can be called that) for his self-loathing. I prefer to respect those who have pride in themselves.

[Shankar is mopre credible than all of those named above put togethwer.]

I got a rusty knife for that idiot. So anytime you are ready, bring on the mullah, do a little chop chop and have the headshrinker become another Abdullah (Allah`s slave). Maybe he will then start hating Islam.

Please, oh puhleeeeeze, take him.

[Why you are disecting Shankar Bhais post.]

Because that brain-dead idiot poses as a know-it-all on the Chowk and you pathetic fools lap it up when he spews his self-loathing here.

[People mention popular name (celebrities)as point of reference ,to communicate more clearly ,b/c then they remember the land marks.Whether he said Carmivchal ,or altman,or nari point andheri ,IS NOT THE PINT.get it???]

It IS the point. Because, this guy has been making up stories all along here and I am catching him on his inconsistencies. Unlike him (or the rest of you guys and gals here), I have a steel-trap memory and I intend to nail this frigging idiot every time he trips up.

[thaught you were boasting of Jag!!!!!!!!!!!!!!]

No. Read his posts. My reference to a Jag is to make fun of the Headshrinker.

Anyway, wait till I get my hands on the medical roster in Michigan. I have a strong suspicion that this guy is not a qualified doctor as he claims to be.

[In my primary schooldays, I used to go to the same school (Hill Grange) as the Ambani brothers (of Reliance fame). We used to all beg to go to their house, because he had the only authentic table tennis table in his house. Besides he used to live in the tallest ``skyscraper`` in Bombay in the 70s--Usha Kiran. That building was in one of Bombay`s classiest neighborhoods (Altamount Rd).]

Some of us (not those like YLH or the Chowk Editors who always fall for your anti-Hindu views) always knew that you just make up things as you go along.

Usha Kiran is a 24 story building on Carmichael Road, not Altamount Road.

Don`t come up with the bullcrap that the Brihanmumbai Mahanagarpalika (that is Greater Bombay Municipal Corporation to you Urduwallahs) has changed the name of the road.

They would have changed it to something like Kakasaheb Doddering Fool Ashole Road.

[However, when I actually stepped in his flat, it was decorated very simply, no different than the gujjus in my building--I had tons of Gujju friends/neighbors. I`ve seen Anil Ambani coming to play in bare feet :) Thats what I like the most about Gujjus; no snobbishness ``because I have money``.]

You are as likely to have gone to school with the Ambani kids or gotten into their flat as to have landed on the moon.

As for non-ostentation among the Ambanis, the press reported that during Anil`s wedding, the fireworks alone cost Rs. 5 million.

Headshrinker, you have a serious problem.

You want to be seen as a kindly man providing friendly advice on the Chowk and professional advice to your patients.

I think you have gone loco.

Cuckoo.

Over the bend.

Now go take your beautiful wife on a drive along Altamount Road in Bombay in your Jag.

semipreciousme: I thought that was a nice picture too (man and burqa-less woman shaking hands in Kabul). Another cool picture is in the washington post today of a NA soldier in his military uniform alongwith his two taliban prisoners. The three are sitting in a restaurant, with full meal of chicken, Afghani naan and salad too in front of each, with talib prisoners eating with elegantly held spoons!! The newspaper caption claims the NA soldier even paid for this lunch!! This is Afghan hospitality at it`s best.

Of course war is never fun and games, and even as we speak there is a battle going on in Kunduz with thousands of men seemingly doomed to a certain death. But what the heck, there is always this other side to things.

al1i: over to you to explain the real reason why the three guys are such good chums and why the NA soldier is investing in this meal...

{{haven`t the marus made it big?????}}

Didnt mean to discredit marus by leaving them out:) Sure they made it big. Maybe my perception is incorrect, but marus generally tend to stay put in India & make their fortunes in the country. OTOH, Gujjus & Sindhis have gone all over the world & made it big. I`m just relating my personal perceptions (without any scientific backing)..

egalitarian_brahmin,

Youre right about the gujju`s ability to make money. I sincerely believe if India`s finance minister were all gujjus; we would be better off even than Japan, today.

Gujjus, like their neighboring cousins Sindhis, have gone all over the world & have money--regardless of what type of govt. I know a Gujju who made money in the Communist Soviet Union--right from the 70s! He sold Indian handicrafts to the Communist elite. I wont be surprised if there is a Gujju owned grocery store in North Korea:)

Eventhough they make a lot of money, they like to live very modestly--so its pretty hard to tell which Gujju is fabulously wealthy by just looking at him or his lifestyle. In Bombay, at least.

In my primary schooldays, I used to go to the same school (Hill Grange) as the Ambani brothers (of Reliance fame). We used to all beg to go to their house, because he had the only authentic table tennis table in his house. Besides he used to live in the tallest ``skyscraper`` in Bombay in the 70s--Usha Kiran. That building was in one of Bombay`s classiest neighborhoods (Altamount Rd). Those guys were fabulously wealthy even in those days. We were all very impressed at the swanky building & the classy ``phoren`` made cars in the parking lot.

However, when I actually stepped in his flat, it was decorated very simply, no different than the gujjus in my building--I had tons of Gujju friends/neighbors. I`ve seen Anil Ambani coming to play in bare feet :) Thats what I like the most about Gujjus; no snobbishness ``because I have money``.

Also, theyre born capitalists. If youre a Gujju, you could sell a comb to a bald man:) People (esp local maharasthrians) are very jealous of them . Thats why, in Bombay , at least, the term ``bania`` means Gujju. I`m surprised that in Chowk (& maybe in Pakistan?? bania means, all hindus).

The bottom line is ,``more power to them``. Theyre 10 times better than those goddamned ``ghatis``; who have screwed up Bombay, with their frikking Shiv Sena politics & goondebazi. Come to think of it, I dont think I`ve ever come across a Gujju goonda:) That prejudice against Gujjus is no different than the prejudice Jews encountered in Europe.

I have one VERY SERIOUS complaint about Gujjus, though. I used to DREAD that goddamned Navratri. A guy cant get a wink of sleep on those days because of your frikking dandya ras. Besides, havent you noticed that the guy & gal who have the worst frikking voice always volunteer to sing those goddamned Gujju dandya songs. Nine nights of sheer frikking torture.

By the time we were in high school, all the nongujju guys vowed that we`ll lock up all our banya friends in a garage, so they could`nt go to that frikking dandya . Thats when the Gujjus spilled the beans. They said ``some of the cutest girls in the neighborhood have been coming to dance. Best excuse to er.. line marao:)``

Goddamned SOB Gujjus!! Screw this S *it, the heck with sleep, WE`RE ALL GOING to dancing! Hey pass me one of those damned sticks...

So as you can all see from the post below... the 60th bottle of beer indeed was taken down by me personally.

All the allegations circulating in the media about Tahmed & I having siphoned off some bottles of beer into our personal stash are baseless & libelous. I am currently in dialog with my attornies contemplating legal action against these nefarious rumormongers.

As of now 59 bottles of beer remain on the wall and shall remain until some such time when they are necessitated to be removed. Until then Tahmed & I stall retain the right to use the removed bottles at our discretion. Needless to say the said bottles will be used solely for the betterment of general society.

Now if you will all excuse me I have a long off-season ahead of me.

A quick response (hopefully will write more later) to some people:

Latif Chappu: I knew Chowk Staff would do it`s best to stop the record from being broken. I agree, MVP goes to AAmir (ylh seems to have gone home in the meantime, probably to study for his South Asian History and Great Man Studies exams). On RSaxena`s objections, I guess our posts did interfere with the serious business of dragging Indo-Pak relations into the gutter as some folks are dedicated to on Chowk.

Egalitarian Brahman: Maybe you could put the Bombay pictures on the internet sometime. I plan to go to Bombay one day. And other parts of India too. My niece did it last year (on her own) and she can now write a book on it. Incidentally, they do have water sport a few miles from Islamabad as well. Also, for more on Islamabad, please check out the story on Islamabad wildlife in my response to AnNy below. Glad folks in Bhuj are moving on with their lives after the earthquake.

AnNY: (since you have an emergency question regarding the Islamabad tiger): You may walk fearlessly. No tigers have been reported on Margalla. A leopard was reported 20 years ago, but he must have retired to Florida by now. An occassional wild boar may cross your path early morning, but wild boars dont eat people (dont get it mad though). Really early, you CAN hear the majestic roar of the LION. But this LION is in a cage, no problem. It shares the tiny Islmabad zoo with other rare and exotic creatures like chicken, ducks and even a goat!! To see monkeys, go for a walk on E-Sector (I forget the road`s name, right next to the Margalla) early morning past the house of the Father of Our Sacred Nuclear Bomb (I forget his name): they come down next to the sidewalk because the guards have been told to feed them. If you go for a walk at 5:30 am on that same sidewalk, you will see an elderly person(my Dad) taking his early morning walk. Generally he will have one or two other such folks with him discussing bridge. Say hi to him for me.

``About the hits ,the last highest hit was 1189 for Bilal Musharaf ``he had no choice article`` in oct 99 .When your post had more than 1000 hits Latif Chappu,TAhmed321,& others just thaught to break that record for as you know ,Bilal is not the most popular guy in CHOWK. Simple as that.``

Oh brother! I did NOT know this was a popularity contest between Bilal (let us hope he gets better soon) and Aeisha. Ofcourse, Bilal is a hated figure and we all love Aeisha. What better proof than the number of hits on this board?

Only if I knew this earlier! I would have stopped all my other (far less important) work and posted a couple of hundred times myself, instead of sitting back and grinning away at the silliness of some leading Bilal haters, namely, tahmed321, Latif Chappu, et al.

Re: Chowk Staff

In the middle of the assault for the record, the Chowk cyber genie swallowed a whole bunch of my posts. I thankfully have the habit of saving down my posts to counter against just this eventuality.

Following I repost all my lost postings:

Re: 1108 Semipreciousme

Thank you brother but next time break it up into five pieces please? Let`s use our heads people! This is no time to panic!

We are at R minus 78 here! Push push push...

69 bottles of beer on the wall.

Re: Tahmed 1102

Steady now pardner.... steady!

Hey did you see Saxena`s post on the other thread? Looks like he`s pissed at us. We must be doing something right!

68 bottles of beer on the wall.

Re: Team

Have you guys noticed the form fields creeping into the posts? I though the Chowk bot was very averse to html tags being used? Are we seeing sighs of panic??

Go for the jugular now!

67 bottles of beer on the wall.

Re: Veeru

You didn`t double post but that`s OK! Very ethical of you brother!

99 bottles of beer on the wall is a song sung in the back of SUVs by bored American kids while in the middle of a road trip through 245 miles of dead straight road with prairie on either side.

This song is second in popularity only to `To Grandma`s house we go`.... and may be `Diarrhea`.

64 bottles of beer on the wall.

PS And you are right... this song was also part of the 1983 underground bootleg release by Floyd where Waters sand this song for 6 hours in the tour buss. The ensuing fracas famously resulted eventually in Mason, Wright & Gilmour voting Waters off the band and keeping the name. Waters is still known to sing the beer bottle song every now and then.... and guards at the loony bin in Cheshire have reported that Sid Barrett also is fond of this song.

Re: Veeru

And on my end the glaciers have been melting in earnest dangerously swelling the marauding creeks which threaten the timid red willows on their shores. The cottonwoods have fully bloomed and release their little tufts into the early summer air. As I type this I see them floating past my window reminding me of Forest Gump and stirring up a passion inside me that can only be calmed by the assurance that `bama football is just around the corner.

Your trusted munim

Re: Yawaah

Babe you dont seem to get the point. It is not that I am pissed off at you for `not inviting Indians here`.

The thing is... you have absolutely zero say in who comes here and doesn`t.

Get it?

Zero say!

Re: Rsaxena

This is in response to your post on the other thread.

Do you think that what you or anyone else here does is actually more valuable or constructive or productive than what Tahmed and I are doing?

If we are talking about getting a life (you said there was a sale on herpes... no thanks), taking a breather, watch a movie and so on.... get a load of this smartiepants....

Out of 1111 posts:

Rsaxena = 84 posts

Latif Chappu = 30 posts

Tahmed = 34 posts

Even after all of our tomfoolery Tahmed & I have far less posts combined than you alone. So please dont say baseless things and get all YLH on me will ya??

Now be nice and shoot some posts this way.

Your exotic assassin

Re: Team

YEAH BAYBEEEEE! WE WON!!

WE WON WE WON WE WON!!!

Boy that was great!

First of all I`d like to thank all that have contributed. Tahmed321 for his constant support. Yawaah Latif Hamdani who latched on to the bait early in the game and made the final push possible. And of course the MVP AAMIR!

77 posts out of 90!! 40 posts in a row (new record). A performance for the ages! Who would have thought that he would come up so big when it mattered the most. A historic performance by an underrated giant reminiscent of Jim Laker`s 19, Buster Douglass` win over Tyson, Buruchhaga`s overtime goal to win Argentina the 86 world cup!

Bravo! Aamir, bravo!

Now go and enjoy the off season. And lets come back next year for another assault at the summit!

Your beloved third cousin

Latif Chappu

The following records have now been broken on Sarwari`s article;

Highest Team Score: old record 1189, new record 1201 not out;

Highest Individual Score: old record by ylh (no one kept score back then), new record by Aamir 89 not out (score subject to review by the Sub-Committee on the Improper Use of Steroids);

This match is now officially over. Individuals may continue practicing pitching wata balls on the turf.

Great Job Aamir. You have single-handedly waltzed almost to the finish line. And with such fine stories about our persian speaking friends to the west. Here is another one: Nawaz Sharif wishes to re-paint the Prime Minister`s House. He asks the Afghan contractor how much he will charge. The Afghan says 1 Lakh Rupees. He asks the Paki contractor. He replies 2 Lakh Rupees, and explains that he will use better quality paint. NS asks the Iranian who says 11 Lakh: 5 for me, 5 for you and for 1 Lakh we`ll get the Afghan to do the job.

Egalitarian Brahman #1159: I wouldnt go overboard on Islamabad. It`s a nice clean city with mountains in the back and a large population of retired civil and military officers takes good care of the environment. My first job was in Islamabad, where on the third day self and a few colleagues took off to spend the day swimming at the Rawal Lake after boating down to the middle of the lake. I dont think that is permitted since some people drowned I understand due to the currents and all. It was also quite a party town for the younger lot back then...but enough about my stories...I guess you wanted to talk about Islamabad...

Your home-town in India is where they had the earthquake as I recall. How are things there nowadays?

Time magazine includes this in describing the liberation of mazar-i-sharif:

``The Northern Alliance attacked in earnest on Friday night, and the Afghan Taliban soldiers immediately switched sides, while their commanders jumped into pickup trucks and sped south. Only the ``tourists`` — the term Alliance soldiers use for the foreign zealots who make up the most committed of their enemy`s ranks — chose to make a stand. Pockets of Uzbeks, Chechens and Pakistanis held out for up to five days before they were overcome or picked off by snipers.

Around 900 Pakistanis were surrounded in a girls` school, Sultan Razinya, in the southeast of the city. Over three days, the Alliance commanders — Ustad Mohammed Atta, General Rashid Dostum and Haji Mohammed Mohaqiq — say they tried to persuade the Pakistanis to surrender. The Pakistanis refused. By Tuesday afternoon, the commanders had exhausted their patience, and warned civilians living in the area to move away. Then they attacked, and the fighting lasted four hours. The Alliance took just 175 prisoners.``

So, around 700 Pakistanis seem to have been killed at that one spot alone. Who were these pakistanis? most likely boys from poor families sent to madrassahs in hopes of a free education and food and shelter, only to be then sent to support the talibans in afghanistan. the hatred of the afghans for these ``tourists`` makes it obvious that these people were not there as liberators but as part of the oppressors.

Damn the mullahs.

Latif Chappu #1111 ``Keep Aishwarya...`` Good, so the deal is done. Someone please inform her of the deal. We`ll have her run for elections, we`ll have her do TV series. I was getting ready to throw in a couple of goats instead when you rejected ylh, but Paki cricket captains are equally dispensable and you are welcome to take em all (you can see what a great cricket fan I am).

AAmir:

What is your problem? You seem to have inherited YLH`s disease of diarrhea of the keyboard.

I don`t think these 19 irrelevant posts and Latif Chappu and TAhmed321`s posts of `one potato` or `86 bottles of beer on the wall` should count toward the magic goal of 1189 or whatever it is that we are aiming at. I think YLH is perfectly capable of contributing 37 posts during Sunday.

Anyway, the Headshrinker is back defending Hinduism. I hate to think that I have rubbed off on THAT idiot.

Sweetheart, why be so modest? You are not semiprecious; you are completely, totally, winningly, awesomely precious!

It would of course be better if you had some analytic capabilities but then who needs brains today when you can get all the answers from the Internet.

Let us try and see who the author of this document might be. The way the word `Chitpavan` is spelt (Sithpawan), we know this guy uses a language that does not distinguish between `ch` and `s`. It directly leads you to conclude that the author is from Tamil Nadu, the strong-hold of anti-Brahminism. Not that anti-Brahminism is bad but at least we have a starting point.

[There is no copyright for this publication. It can be translated, photocopied, republished, reprinted and sold without prior permission.]

Translation: There is no intellectual content in this pamphlet so I don`t intend to sue anybody for copyright violation because I will be laughed out of court for having shamelessly and selectively plagiarized other people`s writings.

[JAWAHARLAL NEHRU said in his ``THE DISCOVERY OF INDIA`` (Page 37): ``HINDUISM as a faith is vague, amorphous, many sided, all things to all men.

It is hardly possible to define it, or indeed to say definitely whether it is a religion or not, in the usual sense of the word. In its present form, and even in the past, it embraces many beliefs and practices, from the highest to the lowest, often opposed to or contradicting each other.``]

Good point. Logically, then don`t blame Hinduism the religion. Don`t call the natives of India Hindus. Call them Sai Baba worshippers, Small-pox Goddess worshippers, Village-border-deity worshippers, worshippers of the Black Wind, etc. Because, when you ask an illiterate villager what his beliefs are, you are going to find that someone believes small-pox is the wrath of Mariamman the Goddess visited on the people, or the village is safe because there is the deity Ayyanar seated on his horse at the edge of the village or that fever is transmitted by `Karuppu Kattu` (Black Wind). I am picking all these from Tamil Nadu because the author hails from Tamil Nadu so we can all see how scientific his native beliefs were before Brahmins and Brahminism arrived to corrupt these innocent folks who were full of ancient wisdom.

[Their claim, for example, that 600 churches (including Mandaikkadu, Neelakkal ) and 3000 mosques (including Babri Masjid) were once Hindu temples is quite untrue and they are not based on historical or scientific evidence.]

Even though historians contemporaneous with Babar and other sultans of Delhi have recorded the destruction of temples, that is not to be believed because the temples were anyway upholding Brahmin domination.

[The Hindu mentality is such, that it usually accepts anything without questioning its authenticity. The reason is that for several centuries the higher cast Brahmin has taught that the low caste Hindu has no right to question any discrepancies in Hindu beliefs and mythology.]

Good. Let him convert to Islam and then question the Quran. In fact, let him just move to Lahore for a few days and question the Quran. Or, move amongst the Christians of Tamil Nadu and question the Bible. We will see exactly how long he will live after that.

[LEADERS OF FANATIC GROUPS

DHARMALINGA NADAR

CHO RAMASAMY]

Dharmalinga Nadar? Nadar? He of the Chanan caste of toddy tappers? He is a leader of a fanatic group supporting Brahminism and casteism? I think Brahmins have done a great job if they can take a member of one of the lowest castes in Tamil Nadu and make him a supporter of Casteism. On the other hand, perhaps he is sick and tired of the rip-off that has been going on in Tamil Nadu since 1967 in the name of the Dravidian Movement and decided that the Brahmin snakes are better than the Naidus (Telugu-speaking) and Naickers (Kannada-speaking) who have been riding the gravy train on the backs of the Tamil-speaking natives.

Cho Ramaswamy? Isn`t he the guy who asked K. Veeramani of Dravida Kazhagam why the stand of atheism applies only to Hindu gods but not to Allah or Jesus? Veeramani of course had no answer because if he had said there was no Allah either, he could not have walked through Thousand Lights in Madras and escaped with his life.

Cho. Clever Brahmin rascal. How come you Tamilians are so brain-dead you do not ask that question of the leaders of the Dravidian movement? Are you really dumb as the brahmins claim? In that case, don`t you deserve everything you have got so far and then some?

Did you know Veeramani rents his properties in Madras only to Brahmins? Because they pay their rent on time and cause no trouble to the landlord. Did you know that he told his underlings to find a good Brahmin lawyer to plead his case because only the Brahmins have got the brains to do a good job? (My source for this is a lawyer in Madras.) That tells you what HE thinks of non-Brahmins, a belief that I personally will find it difficult to justify or articulate.

[A Shudra`s witness is not normally to be accepted when there is no witness of a ``twice-born`` person.]

It is good that we are debating the political correctness of the Manusmriti. Is this relevant today? Does the CrPC (Criminal Procedure Code) say that a shudra`s testimony is not to be accepted in a court of law?

Why doesn`t the author of the pamphlet then point out that the Quran says that a woman`s testimony is worth half that of a male? At least, that is part of the Sharia and is enforced in Islamic countries.

[To get a strong foothold in India, the Brahmin divided the sons of India into various different castes. According to a recent government survey there are more than 2,000 castes in India. Each caste claims superiority over the other, a man from one caste will not marry a girl of another caste, no two castes congregate together........ and so on.]

The Brahmins divided people into FOUR, count them, you pathetic Tamilian idiot, FOUR jatis. Any further division is your own doing. All of you Brahmin-wannabes decided to pick on the next set of tribes to be declared lower than you. And collectively, all of you made the Untouchables the lowest. But even they have been given a mitigating circumstance. People following other religions and from other countries (the mlecch) are lower than the Untouchables. So, what is your problem? Everybody has someone to look down on, which is what you want anyway.

The one who preached against castes, CN Annadurai of DMK, whom did his children marry? They all married within the Mudaliar caste! Inter-caste marriage is for the Tamilian fools not for those like the DMK who preach it.

Have you seen the Matrimonial ads in Tamil newspapers and magazines? Mudaliar or Chettiar Boy wants a bride, preferably Brahmin. Why, are you guys trying to improve your stock through cross-breeding?

[After 40 years of independence we still can`t save the low caste Shudras from this bonded labour.]

Yes. Find out who owns the quarries in Tamil Nadu where people work in the baking sun quarrying granite for export? Have the guts to identify them by caste. Tell me how many quarries are owned by Brahmins.

[Needless to say, with all the facilities at their disposal they produce brilliant scientists, doctors etc. Assuredly even the low caste Hindus could do this if they were provided with the same facilities.]

Well, the fcuking idiots in Tamil Nadu have tried affirmative action for 53 years and in all that time the educational benefits have gone to Mudaliars and Chettiars and they have produced zilch. So, we might as well write those off as being mentally deficient. I am all for giving more seats to backward classes and backward tribes to see if they do any better. But 25% of seats in professional studies is not enough for them, it seems. Perhaps if they get all 100% instead, they may actually take Tamil Nadu further down the drain pipe. Oh, today 87% of the seats are officially reserved for the backward communiy in Tamil Nadu with just two communities, the Brahmins and the Pillais, declared to be forward. So much for the Nobel Prize winners and Booker Prize winners from the Tamil Nadu educational system.
