You and I often disagree vehemently. But on this you are right on. The `all of them are equally bad` club needs to read and re-read your
``Under Zahir Shah, Afghanistan actually moved forward. The Russians built him roads and the Americans not to be outdone built him a dam. American teachers were at Kabul university teaching the students English and science. Under Zahir Shah, 40% of Kabul`s doctors were women. With Muttawakil, we had even those doctors shut up in their homes. Anyone who quotes Muttawakil to discredit Zahir Shah is a complete idiot. He is keeping his mouth shut because the Afghans have done during this war exactly what they have done during all the wars: taken the money offered by anybody to switch sides. With America the only Daddy Warbucks on the scene, it is no wonder that the Taliban has collapsed so quickly. At least the US did not make the mistake of channeling the money through ISI whose sticky fingers would have retained 80% of the funds and who would have given the rest to Hekmatyar, the thug who used to hit Kabul indiscriminately with rockets.``
There is simply no comparison between His Majesty and the Taliban/ISI rifraff. Both were conservative but one looked forward and the other backward. If Pakistan doesn`t learn the lesson, it ought be taugh again. Maybe the US should force the ISI to be dismantled and decimated entirely.

Re: Stuka
Your idea of instigating terrorism against the Pakistani middle class to let them feel the pain is a very difficult choice to accept. The same applies to diverting water that flows from India to Pakistan. The worst affected will be the ordinary people -- and that is because the military government of Pakistan will quite willingly use its own people as a human shield (just as it has not batted an eyelid when hundreds of Pakistanis have been killed in Afghanistan recently, and thousands are surrounded in Konduz). By the same token, I have a very difficult time believing that a fully democratic Pakistani government will seek confrontation with India, and play games of nuclear brinkmanship.
Romair, lives in an imaginary world where he thinks that these options are not available to the Indian government. And if strategists like him continue to take advantage of innocent Pakistani people`s lack of a voice in political affairs, then I am afraid that India will be forced to exercise some of the above unpleasant options.
Romair has consistently projected the APHC as the `true representatives` of the Kashmiri people, yet will disregard their recent call for a ceasefire and cessation of violence, by maintaining that `Pakistani volunteers` should be given unhindered access to infiltrate under cover of artillery fire.

``...Do you really believe that democracy in India has allowed ``the best and brightest to take control of the helm of affairs`` in India?...``
Political compromise - yes; Economics - no. Striking a political compromise amongst 29 states, a billion people, and countless languages, religions, customs, while maintaining a (granted somewhat flawed) rule of law is no mean achievement.

``The important thing is that, perhaps for the first time, Pakistan has a forward-looking leader who is committed to the country and not to any vested interest. That, in my opinion, can only be good for India in the long run.``
He is not AT ALL forward-looking where India-Pak relations are concerned, he has infact regressed. He has virtually disowned the Simla Accord and has resurrected Partition as the basis for his stands.

``AND it IS not only simple commonsense but also much much cheaper -- to live in friendship with a neighbor -- with 150 million of their same miserable Muslims brethren -- and 900 million of the same miserable Hindu brothers -- who speak some of the same incomprehensible languages -- eat some of the same stinking food -- watch some of the same trashy films -- THAN -- to GO BANKRUPT -- financially, politically and morally, -- fighting over Kashmir -- till ``eternity``.
nasah, `us paar` it seems the biggest problem facing subcontinental Muslims is their beleaguredness due to the existence of Hindus. This supercedes every other minor problem being faced by them, eating grass included.
Even having a separate state didnot help one bit, because hey the Hindus are still around and Muslims are as beleagured as before. Every subcontinental event/dynamic is interpreted as being only subtext to this main theme(everything else is irrelevant anyway), namely the beleaguredness of subcontinental Muslims and the need to continuously thwart devious and evil Hindu designs.
Hence those Kashmiris who happen not to be fighting for independence cannot be true Muslims. Pakistani jihadis, deserving of affection though regrettably lacking in civic, social and sartorial sense due to attending the wrong schools, should not be stopped from volunteering, planting harmless landmines and IEDs and throwing an affectionate grenade, (when did one Muslim kill another Muslim afterall?). The Kashmiri Hindus are Hindus after all, bhagal me`n churi of the best and who cares about Buddhists, they donot eat meat or carry guns and so are irrelevant. Of course depends on how many were Khatris originally, in which case... And if these Buddhists happen to be Dalits , then its a different matter, then they qualify to be declared beleagured too. Kashmiri Sikhs are Sikhs after all, co-beleagured.
Anything other than Kashmir will be viewed the same way, whether trade or cultural exchanges, a covert attack on a beseiged minority.
If you can find a way for India-Pak detente to somehow fit into the beleagured Muslim-cum-minority-vs-evil-Hindu grand narrative which is fed to many Pakistanis like mothers milk then you are a genius and theres a chance for such a detente to happen, else all you are doing is asking them to disown that same mothers milk and the founding principles of their national identity.

``over the past fifty odd years we pakis have managed to create a national and cultural identity which transcends the silliness of religion and the absurdity of kashmir ....regardless of what you hear on the chowk most pakis are not preoccupied with kashmir - they are busy taking care of mundane things like trying to earn a living ..........``
Good, congratulations and I take your word for it, I said much the same thing #391. So why do Pakistanis keep following policies which are bad for them but good for the Army?

Meanwhile, back on the home front:
``Pak cabbie in US wins $55m lottery
From Afzal Khan
WASHINGTON – Pakistani cab driver in Washington overnight became a billionaire winning the largest single Powerball lottery prize – a $55.2 million (about Rs 3.48 billion) jackpot.
Ehsan Khan, 43, who lives in Arlingtin and had come to the United States 22 years ago, claimed the prize nine days after it was announced. During this period he was apparently working out arrangements for personal safety and had also hired a financial adviser. He declined to speak to the media as cameras clicked his pictures.`` (Nation, Pakistan)

It is easy to brainwash ignorant, poor and illiterate people. That is what average Aghanis are. with no modern industries, infrastructure, Modern education, health care, financial institution and communication system - the only thing available to them is guns through which they can survive either by loot, plunder sell their loyalties at the opportune time.
It has been easy for Pakistan to use Afghans and keep Afghanistan as a satellite state. This has backfired. Generals of Pakistan or not diplomats or historians. They are very myopic. They do not even have resources for such an adventure to sustain Afghans forever.
Maharaja Ranjit Singh, the son of Punjab, knew that it is expensive to keep Afghans as there was nothing to gain from them. All he wanted was to keep them at bay and took the future Afghan wars to be faught on Afghanistan soil. The British who followed Maharaja`s policies drew Durand line thus dividing territory of Afghanistan keeping NWFP on the side of India. After the creation of Pakistan, NWFP went to Pakistan although area is Pushtoon and not Punjabi. The language, food habits, culture, dress and facial features are different with exception of common religion.
Afghans were used by Pakistan and Saudi Arabia. Funds came from Saudi while Pakistan implemented it on behalf of Arabs.Afghans hate Arabs and Pakistanis - particularly the later. Talibans true to their character has quietly withdrawn thus leaving Pakistanis and Arabs to their fate. Now they are getting killed. Many such soldiers were on deputation from Pakistan Army: some retired and some still active although clandestinely operating and giving military advise even when American bombing was on.
Musharaff tried to lure the US with plea of Ramadan which would have bought time and given the chance to Taliban to regroup and retreat. It did not succeed. Then he tried ``Moderate Taliban`` stunt. This failed too. Then he changed to ``Moderate Pushtoon``. US did not buy this line. Even Turkey rejected it inspite of Musharaff`s trip to turkey. Then came the Islamic Army as peacekeepers including Pakistani force in Kabul. This was rejected by the UN. Three days ago Pakistan categorically stated that ``Northern Alliance`` government will not be acceptable to Pakistan. We have Baddruddin declared as President in Kabul today. It is not important was pakistan wants but Afghans want. Pakistan Army can use Pakistani people as doormat but not Afghans.
It is failure of Pakistani foreign policy. Afghans should fight to get NWFP from Pakistan which does not belong to Pakistan and is rightfully Afghani territory.
The real criminals are Pakistanis and Saudis. None of the hijackers belonged to Afghanistan. Afghanistan was used as a terrorist laboratory. America should go after Pakistan. AND IT WILL. You can not fool people all the time. Now that the war will come to an end soon. The phase three of dealing with terrorist elements will start. I hope top leadership of Taliban is caught and put on trial thus exposing ISI and Saudi Arab/Middle East connection. It is time to denuke the terrorist organisation. Can you imagine a country being run by Army, corrupt businessmen like Nawaz Sharif and Zardari. The alternative suggested is cricketer like Imran Khan. How horrible can it get? How low? How cheap? How nasty? The pictures of bearded Pakistanis being killed by Afghans is humiliating to Pakistan which Generals do not consider shameful.

Shirin Ahmed #71 Good to hear from you. On the Great Madani: He is a funny one and I enjoy reading his posts. However, his last post seemed so sincerely cynical and defensive of bribery that I did want to find out if he was putting up an act or whether he really meant that bribery is good for ya and for society. I never heard from Madani on that, so I fear the worst and all hope may be lost.

Pakis have too much khunnas built up from the ass-whipping they got from India in 1971 to give up on Kashmir...it nearly bankrupt them the first time around, until Uncle Sam decided to throw more change into the toilet bowl...it will be interesting to see what happens ext time around...of course, Kashmir ain`t going anywhere...not with nukes handily available to all.
