Dear Scout,

``what the hell do you mean....just go ahead and say it in plain English...is that so hard to do?``

Well, why the hell are you reading poetry if you want straight forward stuff in plain English. Go read ``Dawn`` newspaper then.

By: Mahmood Farooqui]

Mahmood Farooqui must be your brother in India maligning the land of his birth.

Why don`t you move to Pakistan if you find India so bad? You get your MBBS in India, come to the US and make money, and make noises about India. If you want to do something for your fellow Indian Muslims, send some money to a charitable organization.

Remember the cabbie in NYC who runs a school in his hoemtown in India? He is doing far more with far less income than you would ever do. That is because you lack generosity of spirit, you pathetic idiot.

Why we remain backward!

By: Mahmood Farooqui

December 7,2001

[]

C L Dosajh, that venerable textbook writer, provided one of the great joys of studying economics at school. Although the books changed every year, his explanations for some of the fundamental economic truths of India remained unchanged.

Agriculture, poverty, population, underdevelopment, all was accounted for by the backwardness of Indian farmers. Lacking a scientific temper, they invested not in their farms, but on ``wasteful`` matters such as weddings. It is now the wedding season in India, and ``wasteful`` expenditure abounds everywhere, nowhere more so than in big cities where we live. Perhaps that is why our cities remain backward.

Ostentatious display of wealth has always been an important way of affirming status within agrarian societies. Following the decline of traditional occasions for convivial hospitability such as festivals, rituals associated with death and coming of age ceremonies - where one played out one`s social role and status - Indians now have fewer opportunities of displaying wealth on a social scale.

Weddings have come to fulfil that lacuna, especially in cities. Festivities associated with it are a way of inviting participation in one`s wealth, not so much with a view to share it, but to ensure a public display of one`s status. Status is about how others see us, and executing a wedding in the accepted ways is a means of creating as well as upholding commonly shared values. That is why the barat is usually a public procession, allowing the world to see it.

The barat, a literary historian told me, is celebratory because its roots lie in the practice of looting women. The wedding band announces one`s victory, and therefore guns are sometimes fired. Undoubtedly the privilege accorded to the barat also emerges from the subservient status of women in our society. It is the apotheosis of maleness, where a collective can claim superiority over another similar one, simply because it is associated with the groom. That superiority can be and is expressed in a multiplicity of ways. In areas of Braj society in Western Uttar Pradesh, there is a practice of humiliating the bride`s family, which is known as `phajeeta uraana`, that is `to mock`. One demands only one particular item of food until it finishes and the bride`s family has been shown up to be inadequately hospitable.

I recently attended such a barat in UP. Since early morning at the groom`s house a shehnai and a dhol player had been diligently serenading the coming event, but towards evening an orchestra-cum-band also arrived. The band is today an indispensable part of all weddings, and for something regarded as traditional it is spectacularly modern, both in origin and in appearance. It originated in the army bands introduced to India by the British along with the newly drilled, uniformed and disciplined armies in the 18th century. The irony doesn`t end there. All its instruments are western, yet it now only plays Hindi film tunes. The band members dress in semi-military regalia, yet most of them are poor and often barefoot.

By the time we set out we were more than two hours late. Leading the procession was the orchestra van, an improvised cart without brakes or steering which was being pushed by four men. Then came the two columns of the band. Behind them were the lights, attached to gardening pots and held in position by young boys on top of their heads. The boys were barely 13, most walked barefoot, and were not allowed a moment`s rest through the march.

The contrast between the festivity of the procession and the wretched misery of the light boys was glaring, yet the baratis decent god-fearing people all of them, remained oblivious. We took two hours to cover the distance of barely a kilometre because the procession halted every few minutes when people were dragged in to join the dancers in the middle. I was told that a delay of two hours was considered mandatory to ensure that the bride`s family knew its place.

What is curious is that most of the baratis were educated, liberal professionals, who otherwise would oppose child labour and male chauvinism but were yet happily consenting to both. They also did not seem unduly perturbed by the large number of beggars who crowded the pandal for leftovers from the feast. This apparent contradiction between conduct and ideology may seem surprising if one overlooks the fact that what people do and what they say they do are incommensurate categories. The heavy yoke of custom bound the people attending that barat, just as it does the extravagant farmers of Dosajh. In both cases we are playing out social roles that confirm our status.

The bored band, the barefoot light boys and the beseeching beggars are important because it is through them that we assert our difference. The barat will remain as long as there are these onlookers. So perhaps will the backwardness that disturbed Dosajh.

A. Sahib,

Still no answer for why your post needed to be crass...probably because the rest of the world and the diversity of thoughts, beliefs, and culture are quite frightening to your mistaken superiority complex....I`m sure your Imam will reassure you. Btw, I am a student of poetry, and yes, we don`t heckle writers unless we have something to offer that`s better. First rule of being a credible writer. The truly great writers are humble anf supportive.

re: ahmed madani # 31

Dear Mr. Madani,

Thank you for the invite. I might just take you up on that.

I am glad you work at such an exclusive hotel, but agar aap itne achche hotel me kaam nahi bhi kar rahe hote, tau bhi aap agar itne pyar se bulaate tau mai zaroor aapki khidmat me haazir ho jaata.

Yes, my grandfather was a Hindu, just like my father is, and I am. Feel free to call me whatever you feel is appropriate. Infidel, or Fidel, it is all the same to me. Buss jau bhi bulaayein pyar aur mohabbat se bulaayein.

You send all your children to English Schools? That is aapka badappan and generosity toward your children. I know that couldnt be very easy for you, which, ofcourse, makes it all the more remarkable. Please convey my best wishes to all your beautiful children. I hope they do recognize the hardwork and sacrifice of their father (and, of course, their mother).

Currently the US IT market isn`t doing very well. There has been increased unemployment in that sector. So make all IT related plans with some care. But markets go up, and markets come down. You should follow your dreams. Those who don`t follow their dreams are fools.

saminashah---29

What defence? In case you do not comprehend something written in average english let me write at your level--a notch or two less than the english madressah(convent)type.

I despise what you approve.I consider it vulgar the very ``FREEDOM`` to exhibit your fart as art, your piss as painting, and your sh1t as sculpture in public.Such people belong behind bars or need treatment, not my tax dollars.Ditto for those who even support such satanic ideas. This is Satanism,a religion, which must be confronted & crushed(like i`m doing now)whenever it tries to raise its ugly head anywhere....including among the pious & clean communities of US.And we muslims have more friends & supporters among the practising jews & christains than you can ever care to imagine.

Are you a new arrival to the poetry scene that you try to grab anyone around to tell them what you read? What makes you think others not read or not know more than you do.Perhaps they are good at spurning a lot of stuff which is around. Those who are even a little aware of Urdu & Farsi poetry will not visit english poetry other than for idle curiosity. It is as bland and insipid as their stuff they call food.

Write your ``critique``(what a joke of a word) or write a poem of your own,if that is what you do,or like to do,best. But please do not impress us with this `minimalism` kind of stuff.Leave that for the immature students at the university.

You are much greater in your cultural inheritence than you are aware of.Get rid of this inferiority complex and try to learn a little from your local imam. You might be surprised!

Afaqui Sahib,

Interesting, your rush to defense. Yes, I do extol the virtues of a society that does not attempt to censor art that interrogates institutions, icons, prejudices. For the record, I may not agree with the art or even like it, but I defend the right of the artist to create, the public to view, the individual to perceive/respond to it,as long as they don`t censor or destroy it. So bringing up Serrano is a bit of a moot point. Someone in my country likes him, and so I live with it. Secondly, are you suggesting your post in any way approaches an artistic expression? I`ve seen more humor, insight and craft on a National Geographic Show.

Thirdly, I just don`t ``get`` what your point in out crassing the next person is. The logic is...? Finally, Maher`s work is a poem that allows interpretation. Could the poem, like many poems be about desire? Is writing about desire a crime? Tell me, A Sahib, why did you react to such a small moment in a ridiculing manner?

Any student of poetry or literature understands the art of minimalism.Japanese and Chinese poets are the masters of this technique. Lets look at an example:

Slender Fingers

Slender, delicate, soft jade,

Fresh peeled spring onions-

They are always hidden in emerald

Sleeves of perfumed silk.

Yesterday on the lute strings

All their nails were painted scarlet.

Chao Luan-luan

This writer was a courtesan in the 8th Century, and is considered a decent poetess. Do deal with it.

sorry mistake in mywrite ok. I mean beautiful white skin not white blood. Explain: Jay is dark and we pakis are fair and white skin brings pleaser when person white like me in among dark indian muslims (mohajirs). I know know they feel dpresed for their dark color and every darki wants to marry whiter person, even women wasnts to marry hiter than character type (this is sad, my wife married me for both white coler and khandan type).I am worred my childs no marry darkis. They know they can get better DNA by marying Punjabi and sindhi. I do not care if preson is having lot of mony mony and white coler khandan type sindhi. but is limit ok. They are good but That what is DNA thing the poitess is saying. I think if little think you can understand.I am not rasist but i like white people to look at.It not right like that but even expak, does same.See Imran married white english, same mr gandhi , so it must be right.I think people give wrong mental about skin and esx i think. But good white skin and look can hurt man carier. My ex Fauji boss feels his wife feels me more handsom and he ugly. He troubl me i think that is mental reason. It is wrong but problom is that all movis in pk are hindu chhap and only beautiful people in that and boy and girl with even good religion train goes for buty and esx apeal.even i think religion enforces of 72 milk white =buty girls in haven for people slaughtered by jungali afghan, why not dark ugly.Anyway All lafangebazi. Any way good poim stimalated my esx thinking by lips and dna the look and coler, buty and race and dna, all power ful ok. good bye. Feeling hungry see what good food in our * * * * (4 star hotel)hotel on Dr. Ziauddin road. I protest!

Why do you think only you have the monopoly on Bullsh1t?

Here is my bullsh1t

Bullsh1t

Between the azure & the green

how serene!

flowers,a riot of colours

moisture oozing tall trees

and I wonder

how is it possible?

how the hell is it possible

in this barren land no water no soil

and no one here to toil

everyone asking someone else to work

exhorts them the virtues of hard labour

and less(or no)pay

This enigma,riddle,cross-word,cheestan

landed me into this asylum

although by this time

I had it all figured out

but my fault blunder only this that

like eurika I had blurted it out loud

way way up ALOUD---& they heard it!

it was

SaminaShah:--19

I thought of all people you are the one who appreciates such serious discourses on art & literature. No it was not for fun.

I think you are the one who was recently extolling the western-virtues of that piss in bottle & the icon(I cannot blasphem the name) art exhibit somewhere.

Today I read that another of your fellow traveller `artist` got a grant of 1300 dollars for his art exhibit in a gallery. The art?five vials of his sperm which he refreshes & produces by efficient wristwork.

Nothing is vulgar in the english language. They thrive on it and promote it.If we want to progress we must out-vulgar them.Is that not the reason heavy-tuitions,bribes,& connections were used to send us to Zero-level schools?

Quotable quote:``When you are spotted in heera mandi at dusk,do not pretend that you were on your way to the Badshahi Mosque``

Instead of the `minimalist` comment your own explanation or understanding of it could have enlightened us a little about your capabilities too.

Scout you take the fun outta everything! Is it my fault that your brain is too small to decypher the words of a simple poem? Go complain to your DNA!

No, Im kidding, the last thing I wanna do is anger a cub scout. All the nastly little things you can do with shoelace and nailpolish...

Look, I agree, poems are kinda annoying. Anyone can do them. Sheit, off the top: my debut...

Bullsh1t, by Drumz...

Is it the Nebulaic majesty of the night?

...queiter and darker, or have I closed my eyes?

Inwards, She calls.

Another taste of the nurturing nector of the eternal soul...

I baske.

And for a brief moment,

Pluto`s misery calmly, drifts away...

Now then, anyone know what I was talking about, cuz I have nooo fukking clue...

No Im kidding, of course I know what that was about. I shall now explain myself to the uncouth. The poem was was a chronicle of numerous venerial diseases native to the Iberian peninsula Circa 1670.

For my next trick, I will teach all of you poetry. You will become a great poet like me in no time.

1. Write something down. Anything, the more adverbs the better. The words don`t have to have any relation to eachother. Hell they dont even have to be real words (``nebulaic``).

2. Show someone else what you`ve written. the second party is the key.

3. Invariably the reader will give you a puzzled look. At this moment, and only this moment, you must look at your reader with intense anger (ie. immulate the expression of the father in the scene where he tells his daughter that she`s no longer welcome in the family. He`s found out she was seen with a boy who wears a leather jacket.``)

4. Reader will now begin to question his own intelligence. There must be something wrong with him. Afterall, the poem did make sense to you-otherwise you wouldnt have written it...

These are the private musings of a Paki ass(as in donkey) who has just been whipped 40 times by a uniform to mount a salivating Paki mare`s ass(as in -hole).The red red ass-hole is making the animal ass(as in donkey) wonder what will happen to his offspring? & if at all so possible,Can DNA & not AIDS be the result? Will the offspring go phhoren(thank you yourstruly)or get his Zero-Level here. What about the greencard? Are even mules under suspicion-- post-911.Even if he is a Democrats`legit seed?

And then the really big issues?OK so even if he has to mount this b/itch of a mare & not someone his level why can`t he at least have the freedom to get the real thing--few inches below. Some consolation though. At least the one who whipped was shouting in english. What a relief----phew!

And hey,the silver lining!the mare`s been around!was part of the Royal Stables on an exchange programme. No ordinary ass(as in -hole)this mare, the monarchs` own studs serviced her.

Oh what a fantasy this.First S&M and now the english connection! ``My cup(wink,I`m being polite)runneth over the rim.Got to go,got to mount``.

The Drumzial interpretation:

``Is it that your lip

stick is redder

when the shades

over only two

windows? When there is a forty

against my wrist?

Listless;

my lips

cling to the liquor-

-The blocking of her eyes brings new attention to her lips, as duz the fact that he`s pissy drunk (ie bout 2 get freaky).

``I mull

over the pattern

in the DNA

of my

desire.``

-S/he wants to get laid.

I think Mahim is better at this then I...

(Note: there`s a much deeper interpretation to the first verse but ya can`t feed meat to babies- juss playing).

Mahim,

What kind of education/background do you expect your readers to have in order to understand what you write?

I sware I don`t have a clue as to what you`re trying to say.... probably its just me. Obviously chowk editors understood your poem and decided to publish it.

How is the contribution to the Pakistani society coming along?

Mahim

Nice minimalism. It`s hard to pull off sometimes.

Hope to see more!

A forty is a large bottle of beer popular with college boys. Vivez Molson Bleu Dry!

Ah, am so fascinated with men and their desire for women.

Glad someone enjoys my Friday Times work. The column is a pleasure to write. I like messing with my readers.

Mahim:

I like the thought but am a little concerned with the imagery. Usually one receives if one gives but liquor, lipstick and substances with DNA in abundance are auxillary to the act. May the force be with you......

Desire is never far away from any serious poet.
Some strong symbolism here.

``When there is a forty
against my wrist?``

Need a little help understanding the line above.
