Stuka,
This is an extraordinarily interesting piece. I`m afraid I`ll need to read it a few times to understand it completely...
Welcome to Chowk! :)

Hey, How`d you guys know that Parag is Stuka?
Very well written piece Parag. I remember my first year at the University was also in 1990, the year of Mandal. Classes were cancelled, but we were so excited about being in college that the entire incoming class used to end up in College anyways. This was no mean task given that buses would not go into DU, and everyday I would walk/hitch a ride to college, and the same on the way out. And all for what? A few hours of hanging out in the hallowed halls of Hindu College!
I remember the fun of chalo-ing ``Staff`` on bus-wala`s. That they would accept this from a small, thin guy with specs shows how scared they were. Not to mention the excitement of trying to fit 10 people into the only car which stopped in half an hour to give us a hitch.
I cannot say that I took any active role in the anti-Mandal movement. I only made angry statements about it within my friends circle, and to vague strangers in DTC buses who asked me what the news from DU was, and expressed their support for ``the movement``. I was one of those completely apolitical students who come in and leave DU without ever having voted in any student election. All I can say is that I had a really good time in the three years that I was there, and your piece reminded me of those good years.

Good work!
Knowing some Delhi University student ``politicians`` on a personal basis, I pretty much know this stuff.
You spoke of Karnal. Any connections, stuka?

[Do you or any Chowkie know how important is Students Union.I remember many strikes, processions ,protests & Vandalism done but looking back it was all waste of time property & energy.]
Nope. It is excellent training for participation in riots similar to those you have today in Gujarat.
I for one am glad that the policemen gave the author a sound thrashing.

Re: the article
Mr Vohra,
An interesting piece. I have seen strikes from close quarters. I always thought they were a waste of time. It is basically testosterone running amuck among teenage boys.

Stuka,
I really enjoyed this piece. It brings back memories of the general idiocy underlying campus politics. The curious correspondence between the strikes held for burning causes and prescheduled class tests was the best thing about it all :).
I was in N. Delhi for a while upto early `90, though not in DU. The Mandal agitation had not begun but the `holy bricks` for Ayodhya had already begun to be rallied. I remember girls returning to hostel after the weekend in the suburbs, saying `do you know today my colony dispatched its share of mandir bricks and I was shocked that my parents participated in the ceremony, I didnot expect this from my parents of all people`. I would myself have long arguments with my own rels., I would say BJP`s politics was destructive and dangerous and they would say `once they are in power, they will change and become responsible`. Those were such innocent times!

Is this a deliberate attempt by the `Chowk` staff to shake of Chowk`s Pakistani character?
#11 Posted by veeresh on March 2, 2002 12:20:51 am
DU has changed.
In the `70s, people hung about, did theatre, and went to Naxalbari. Bus pass 12.50, few bikes, no cars.
In the `80s, nobody knows what people did. Bus pass 12.50, more bikes, few cars.
In the `90s, people did Mandal, then got into the IAS. Bus pass 12.50, fewer bikes, some cars.
Now, all they want to do is MBA or ``compootur``. Bus pass free, very few bikes, lots of cars and no more parking space.

Failed your high school exams and bribed your way into college, depriving some deserving student of a place. And you have the cheek to be smart arsed about it. Utterly pathetic.
By the way, the word is ``guarantee``, not
``guaranty``. No wonder you flunked your exams.

I have the same question. How come it was such a public information and I never heard about it.
Brother Vohra...naah I will stick with Stuka..:-)..does not it feel like a dream..I mean those university days and all those agitations, bands, harhtaals, dharnas, bus roko, rickshaw roko, rail roko, Tanga roko..etc etc roko etcs...
The day Indira Gandhi was killed I spent the night in a police station.....it was really cold particularly early in the morning but luckily only a few days ago they had captured a truck load of ``Bhukki``...all that was stored in the veranda where we were kept...so as the night passed we cuddled with the boris of bhukki closer and closer...it was the only warm thing besides thanedaar sahib`s danda...which we heard working on few of us..I was luckily spared...

To the author:
``From that day on, as the agitation steadily worsened, with Rajeev Goswami and others immolating themselves in protest, my mission remained clear. Have fun, make money, but do not put yourself in danger.``
Vohra,
I hope you can feel the revulsion that is boiling inside of me for you and your ilk. A lazy good-for-nothing who proudly proclaims that it was promises of spin-doctoring (horse-trading is a more apt term if you ask me) that got you into university AFTER connections failed to work, you THEN has the temerity to protest the Mandal reservations, which even if they were unfair at least were made in a spirit of affirmative action and social justice. People like you, who have seen nothing but the easy way, the short-cut, the queue-busting all their lives are the reason why our country can`t get itself out of its sh1t. I hope you live in Boston forever and never come back. We are much better off without you.
As for the para I quoted, it`s just as an example of your pathetic attempts at injecting humour into a deadly serious thing like the Goswami sacrifice. People like you -- the hangers-on of our society, the drunken brats who drive Daddy`s BMW over innocent pavement dwellers, the moneysoaked raveparty freaks who go around shooting women who refuse to sleep with you, the cocaine sniffers at 5000 bucks a snort --- are happily missed.
I hope you take this in the right spirit, mate. You ARE scum, you know.
Cheers
SM

Dear YLH # 10 . . .where does it say anywhere that chowk.com is a Pakistani site? Or for that matter, an Indian site? Or a site that is here to discuss Jinnah/Nehru, Kashmir/Kashmir, Military Rule/Democracy . . . cricket, movies, humour . . . girls, boys, sex, poetry?
Chowk is as ``only Pakistani`` as Hamdani or Malik is a Pakistani or Indian surname.
warm regards,
Veeresh
