Ana,
Also, what`s wrong with being an intellectual? Its the ``anti intellectuals`` you need to be wary of...always complaining because they don`t get it and more significantly, they don`t agree with the viwepoint being discussed and will throw every firecracker to distract the majority from debating the issues at hand...why cant you be an intellectual woman and belong to other vital, pragmatic communities?
One last thought; I think ``anti intellectuals`` are the last flank of the ``p.c. backlash`` that plagued our universities in the nineties....
ylh
I think you know why I posted my academic schedule...disingenious to the very end...hope we that stereotype machine of yours doesn`t have trouble after the monkey wrenches thrown in it in the last two weeks...btw, would you consider your family as part of the Pakistani elite?

Ana,
DO email me! Are you in the tri-state area?
Rehan Bhai Sahib,
I hope there will be at least one of S. Ray`s stately and eloquent movies...not that I`m trying to tell you what should be on your syllabus (Don`t you regret having brought up this topic at all, after all our bakwaas?)

great deal from joing the Chursi Club.
I don`t think that he/she will want to unwind over a couple of beers.”
Rasbhai, you are very much too optimism.

Giving him choclate for seratonin release instead – that is ok anda lso will chill him out. Lo cal is also good ideas, otherwise too much weightgain, danger of hi cholestral. Na?

{Do tell..can you describe a particularly enlightening session?}
...well, i don`t think my experiences there would be very interesting for others to read about :)...i was just suggesting that you might find the place and some of its events interesting...
{Are any of you folks familliar with the Central Park Summer Stage outdoors concerts?}
...yeah, too hot (the weather) and too crowded...and as everything else in nyc, a bit pretentious...haha...

Some psychological correlates
of cannabis users
by
Menhiratta SS, Wig NN, Verma SK
Br J Psychiatry 1978 May;132:482-6
ABSTRACT
Fifty persons who had all been heavy cannabis users for a long time were given psychological tests measuring psychomotor, perceptual and other variables. Half of these persons were ``Charas`` smokers, half ``Bhang`` drinkers. The duration of cannabis use was 4--10 years, with an average daily dose of 150 mg tetrahydrocannabinol. A matched control group of twenty-five persons were given the same tests. Compared with this group, the cannabis users were found to react more slowly, to be poorer in concentration and time estimation, to have higher neuroticism and greater perceptuo-motor disturbance. The higher neuroticism and greater perceptuo-motor disturbance. The Charas smokers were the poorest performers and also showed poor memory, lowered psychomotor activity, and poor size estimation.

Fatal `Bhang` poisoning
by

Med Sci Law 2001 Oct;41(4):349-52
ABSTRACT
A young adult male of about 25 years of age consumed a glass (about 300 ml) of Bhang on the holy occasion of ShivRatri. The deceased died within 24 hours of consuming the Bhang. The deceased had suffered from rheumatic heart disease with multiple valvular involvements. He had also undergone open-heart surgery in the past. Fatality due to Bhang is extremely rare and therefore the case is presented. An attempt is made to review the literature. Bhang is one of the Indian preparations of Indian hemp (Cannabis sativa). It is prepared by the wet grinding of the leaves of the plant. The bolus is then consumed in various ways. Water is used as a vehicle. In the present case a bolus of about 1 to 2 gm was mixed in a glass of water. ShivRatri is a Hindu festival. On this day prayers are offered to Lord Shiva, who is the god of all evils and poisons. Bhang is a special article, which is offered to Lord Shiva on this auspicious day. Then, the devotees consume it as the God.
[What an enlightened DungBeetle Sicko-Lyer Dungocracy]
Gujrat is a dry state (possession, consumption, sale, etc. of alcohol, Bhang, opium and other psychotropic substance, etc. is governed by particular laws), but on the holy occasion of ShivRati, for a day, the law is relaxed for the use of Bhang. In most other parts of the country, particularly, in northern India, it is a common practice to consume various preparations of Indian hemp like Bhang, Charas, Ganja, sweetmeat, etc. The bolus mentioned above is probably the minimum single dose.

I just read a moving tribute to Kaifi Azmi in today`s Dawn..I had no idea until I read that that he had passed away. If anyone is interested in reading it, it`s at www.dawn.com, and just click on the Books section.
I remember that one song..from Kagaz ke Phool, where Guru Dutt and Waheeda Rehman (speaking of jaams and Waheeda) stand in the studio, and are so completely apart from each other..the only line I can recall right now is `tum rahe na tum, hum rahe na hum`, but whenever I listen to it, it makes me sad. May Kaifi sahib rest in peace.

*chuckling at Ras`s and Godot`s comments *
and wouldn`t the charsi club benefit even more from some really good tequila, or vodka, or good single malt scotch whiskey even? How about some of our own homemade alcohol, what is it that can blind someone called..`tharra`? If this is what it really takes to loosen someone up...why stop with the few hits when we can advance to shots?!?
no, no, no...no need to panic. Surely I jest?

Really scout I was so damn serious in that post..I couldn`t tell.. yeah whatever...Actually, I don`t think that class would all bad, particularly if chursi keeps in mind that he is not god`s gift to mankind...
I hope he doesn`t plan to start like every other expert of Indian Cinema with a screening of `Pathar Panchali`... yaar please apnay students par reham karna! That movie is boring as hell! Atleast with commercial indian cinema, one gets a few laughs here and there.

Godot,
I`ll be studying at the Graduate Center, The City University`s Ph.D center in Manhattan. AND lest anyone should wrongly assume that it is a ``rinky-dink`` institution, it is considered among the best post graduate institutes around that happens to offer state tuition to its students. Admission is grueling and our faculty contains some of the most venerable as well as cutting edge in academia...also extremely diverse as CUNY schools are; a huge Asian-South Asian student pop. for example, and whats more, many students who have left NYU`s and Columbia`s programs for The Grad Center`s equally challenging yet not cutthroat atmosphere...I had two Ivy League refugees who couldn`t take the backbiting and exorbitant tuition who were thrilled to be at the Grad Center in one of my classes last semester....I`ll be starting ph.d. (inshallah) there by next summer

ylh #44,
bewaqoof larkay, why can`t you just relax a little.... don`t u get it, it`s all in good fun, my conversation with saminashah here......i saw that picture in the url that u posted a long time ago.
i have no money to enroll in any school right now, old or new.... and besides, what`s the big deal in going to a lecture or two?
and i am quite familiar with Ayn Rand, i just don`t make a big issue out of it. some people call her a pseudo-intellectual....it`s all about how you view things.
u`re too young to take everything so seriously and so negatively. take care.

Samina, You are working on a PhD, aren`t you? What school? What dept? What`s the dissertation? Just curious...
Re: ylh, scout
Rehan doesn`t have a chursi face (that would be an insult to the chursis like me!) In his picture, Rehan is just ``trying`` to look angry! He`s A Rebel Without A Clue!
Re: Rehan
Hey, I know you cannot stand my guts (that`s alright; join the club--you maybe the president!) But perhaps we should meet one day and share some churas. After a couple of drags, everything will slow down and you and I will become really good friends. Churas has that effect on people! If Musharraf and Vajpayee, and Sharon and Arafat could do that together, there will be peace on earth in no time!
