actually, when I lived in Sri Lanka I did celebrate Poya Day and other festivals with Buddhists, just the same way I celebrated Easter Sunday with Christians, the same way I celebrated Hannukah with my friend back in high school, the same way I celebrated Holi and Diwali with my Indian friends back in Uni, and exactly the same way I celebrate Eid with Muslims. I don`t see anything wrong with taking part in these festivals and learning a little something about another culture...because religion certainly does teach us a lot about a country`s culture. I love Christmas because its really a lot more than simply celebrating the birth of Jesus Christ, its about family, its about fun, its about bringing yourself closer to the one`s you love. AND YES, I LOVE IT!!! just the same way I love Eid, I love dressing up and getting my Eidi and spending time with the one`s i love.....nothing more, nothing less.

Have you ever made a pilgrimage up the side of a mountain with Buddhists, walked into an ancient Buddhist temple, ringed with lily pads in a pond, and laced with monkeys in every corner and a huge white elephant in the middle? It is the most spritiual experience I have had and I learned a lot about their religion. No, it doesn`t make me a kafir because I went to a Buddhist temple.

The other day I went to check out the Coptic Church here in Egypt. I went to this shrine of Santa Maria and I drank water from the well and lit a candle at the altar. Another very spiritual experience. Yes, i learned a lot. No, it doesn`t make me a kafir because I drank water from a well.

However, most Americans I know truly welcome the fact that I celebrate with them and most Sri Lankans I know welcome it as well.

Do Muslims welcome Christians who want to fast during the Holy Month? Yes, we do. At least the ones I know do. We accept it, we teach them, we show them what to do and why its important to us, and most of all, we love the fact that they are interested!

I agree, I have equal contempt for those desis who adopt the superficial aspects of Gora society but do not implement the core values of hard work, civic sense, respect for law and order, business ethics and the like. The one thing I am not sure about is respect for dissent because dissent with violence is an act of war, and should be responded to as such. Dissent from the barrell of the gun is not condoned even in Western societies.

z-tv (pronounced g-tv) is actaully a nauseating experience - Im stuck with it because it came as a satellite package. z-tv turns the tv into the proverbial ``idiot box`` where people don`t know anything more than indian movie songs - the variety shows, the talent shows, the general knowledge shows are only about songs. I have never seen a program which may give me information about India minus movies. Soaps are terrible - as a friends puts it ``it`s all about naags and nagins`` where characters act like nags and nagins coniving, trecherous, back biters, and leg pullers ugghh. I know it represnets Indian society but too much of it makes one wanna puke. Occassionally, I tune it for news, which is usually anti-Muslim, anti-Pakistan hate propaganda directed towards your own people. If for some starnge reason Paksitan is not on news then it is news of some pick pocket lynched by a mob in koitembore.

Yes I go home tired and the first thing I do is to find the channels where The Simpsons is on. Unfortunately z-tv falls in the way. The other day when I was flipping channels I saw a steamy scene on z-tv, where a teenaged girl moans ``hai mama``

I said ``hain? come again``

And then I realized that it was Uncle and niece.

Not everything is bad. Sometime, they show movies with mithun chakarborti, that I dont miss or a soap with vaishnavi mehant. If mehant makes me a pervert then so be it.
