actually, when I lived in Sri Lanka I did celebrate Poya Day and other festivals with Buddhists, just the same way I celebrated Easter Sunday with Christians, the same way I celebrated Hannukah with my friend back in high school, the same way I celebrated Holi and Diwali with my Indian friends back in Uni, and exactly the same way I celebrate Eid with Muslims. I don`t see anything wrong with taking part in these festivals and learning a little something about another culture...because religion certainly does teach us a lot about a country`s culture. You asked if I really enjoy ``celebrating and getting down into the nitty gritty`` of other religion`s holidays. Let me just answer that in as straighforward a way as i can: YES I DO. I see nothing wrong with it. It doesn`t make me a ``kafir``. I love humanity...I respect other people`s beliefs....and I love to learn. Its not about having a ``gora complex`` or wanting to be a white person. I love Christmas because its really a lot more than simply celebrating the birth of Jesus Christ, its about family, its about fun, its about bringing yourself closer to the one`s you love. AND YES, I LOVE IT!!! just the same way I love Eid, I love dressing up and getting my Eidi and spending time with the one`s i love.....nothing more, nothing less.
But what I`d really like to know is....what`s eating you?! you also said:

I have taken part in a Holi! And the ``kafir`` in me says its INCREDIBLE fun!!! it certainly doesn`t bother me that my white dress gets stained with color and redness! That`s the fun of it...and lately Pakistan has adopted this festival. More and more weddings have holi functions...i`ve been to a numerous amount in Pakistan also! ok so, if you`ve taken part in Holi... and
<<<>>
you`ve taken part in Diwali, which i have done as well....then how can u pinpoint me??? ah, i sense the sarcasm in that last line. Personally, I think Diwali is a lot of fun.
Have you ever made a pilgrimage up the side of a mountain with Buddhists, walked into an ancient Buddhist temple, ringed with lily pads in a pond, and laced with monkeys in every corner and a huge white elephant in the middle? It is the most spritiual experience I have had and I learned a lot about their religion. No, it doesn`t make me a kafir because I went to a Buddhist temple.
The other day I went to check out the Coptic Church here in Egypt. I went to this shrine of Santa Maria and I drank water from the well and lit a candle at the altar. Another very spiritual experience. Yes, i learned a lot. No, it doesn`t make me a kafir because I drank water from a well.
<<>>
ah, i think i have answered that already. I love humanity, not just the west. No, i am not their dog that I will do only what i feel they want me to do. I don`t even live in America anymore. I live in Egypt. And yes, Valentine`s Day is BOOMING in Pakistan as well. Its so nice to see couples out and about celebrating their love for each other like normal human beings!!
<<>>
Why does it always have to be Islam or no Islam with us Muslims??? Why can`t we accept other religions? You may call me a pagan or a kafir, but my faith is between me and my God....not between me and you. Its not between us!! Why is it that I have to be a certain way to be accepted by Islam? Can I not be normal? Can i not stay within the limits, (no alcohol, no sex, no drugs, no murdering, blah blah) lead a normal life, learn and cherish other religions, and still be Muslim??? Why is it that when a Muslim goes and enters a Church, he/she immediately becomes a kafir, but a Christian can enter a Mosque without a moment`s hesitation or abuse from his/her fellow Christians??? It makes no sense to me.
I need not explain my actions or my life to u. My faith remains between my God and myself.
<<< feel the need to only accept part of the gora culture, that which is most ``fun`` for you, neglecting the feelings of those real practicing Christians for whom their festivals actually mean something? Hmm? After all, no harm done if u accept just one half of someone`s belief system and do laat-maar to the remaining half na? It is after all, a sign of a progressive, liberal and oh-so-accepting and tolerant mind, when u selectively practice someone else`s religion and toy with their beliefs>>>
Toying with their beliefs? How did learning and respecting someone else`s religion suddenly turn into toying with another religions beliefs?? ah, if it offends them, than I am truly sorry. However, most Americans I know truly welcome the fact that I celebrate with them and most Sri Lankans I know welcome it as well.
Do Muslims welcome Christians who want to fast during the Holy Month? Yes, we do. At least the ones I know do. We accept it, we teach them, we show them what to do and why its important to us, and most of all, we love the fact that they are interested!
<<<>>>
We can have both, believe me. Lead a good life, be content within yourself, and have faith.
<<>>
So why do u even care....if you`re a kafir yourself!!!???

...only for the likes of mr.gul...this year i`ll be helping my little cousin dress up as harry potter...for the second year in a row...sigh...the kid`s got it bad...

{hamidm2, so now u have branded me an ``extremist``, is that it? :sadness:
It`s sad to see that so many of u have no understanding of the average human. }
...HE has no understanding of average human?...hehe...you`ve got to be kidding....i guess it depends on which humans you are talking about...so far he has demonstrated far more rational (and funny as hell) thinking than you have....

Urstruly
``but promise me that you will be as passionate about learning good things from other societies also - things like good and honest governance, respect for law and order, respect for dissent, respect for individual freedoms, respect for the rights of the people whom you hate, honest business ethics, and this list just goes on and on.......... if you promise this I think no one will even dare if you celebrate devils birthday or worship him. Can you do that? ``
Man, why u confuse us poor sould like that??? I am convinced that you are a loser till such time you come up with a statement like the one above. :(
I agree, I have equal contempt for those desis who adopt the superficial aspects of Gora society but do not implement the core values of hard work, civic sense, respect for law and order, business ethics and the like. The one thing I am not sure about is respect for dissent because dissent with violence is an act of war, and should be responded to as such. Dissent from the barrell of the gun is not condoned even in Western societies.

z-tv (pronounced g-tv) is actaully a nauseating experience - Im stuck with it because it came as a satellite package. z-tv turns the tv into the proverbial ``idiot box`` where people don`t know anything more than indian movie songs - the variety shows, the talent shows, the general knowledge shows are only about songs. I have never seen a program which may give me information about India minus movies. Soaps are terrible - as a friends puts it ``it`s all about naags and nagins`` where characters act like nags and nagins coniving, trecherous, back biters, and leg pullers ugghh. I know it represnets Indian society but too much of it makes one wanna puke. Occassionally, I tune it for news, which is usually anti-Muslim, anti-Pakistan hate propaganda directed towards your own people. If for some starnge reason Paksitan is not on news then it is news of some pick pocket lynched by a mob in koitembore.
Yes I go home tired and the first thing I do is to find the channels where The Simpsons is on. Unfortunately z-tv falls in the way. The other day when I was flipping channels I saw a steamy scene on z-tv, where a teenaged girl moans ``hai mama``
I said ``hain? come again``
And then I realized that it was Uncle and niece.
Not everything is bad. Sometime, they show movies with mithun chakarborti, that I dont miss or a soap with vaishnavi mehant. If mehant makes me a pervert then so be it.

well.. whatever. I practice what I know best, and that is no deceit to mine own heart. MMA be damned.

...... your wishes have come true.....i saw satan laughing with delight the day the music died ..............the MMA has declared :
``Pakistan is an ideological state and its media policies should be devised in accordance with the teachings of Islam,`` the MMA activist said. There is no room for promoting Western culture, he added. He also demanded that scarf-wearing and head-covering be made compulsory for women appearing on the screen of the official electronic media.
`cause fire is the devil`s only friend
and as I watched him on the stage
my hands were clenched in fists of rage
no angel born in hell could break that satan`s spekll
and as the flames climbed high into the night
to light the sacrificial rite
I saw satan laughing with delight the day the music died

hamidm - All I have got to say is it`s certainly a bizzare kind of world when adults are dictated by children. So adults now learn from children, who learn from what , pray tell?
