Halloween

All hallow`s eve - Satanic Character?- Well, that`s undeniable, innocent fun? yeah sure, that`s undeniable as well - But why should cultural practices entirely alien make their way into Pakistani society? Globalization of culture(s)? Syncretization?

What role do obscuritanista play in this process? Fun, simply Fun, I fear, will soon come under attack in some circles in Pakistan - And I welcome it! Because it is a reflection of the desperation, the bancruptrcy of ideas, the shallowness of the obscuritanists grasp and vision of society.

So is Halloween in Pakistan good or bad? - It`s absurd, it`s neither good or bad - such a characterization, would be a evasion of responsibility, a responsibility we share - When our youth, our culture, our society finds alien ideas more to their liking, more in keeping with their aspirations, then we can no longer claim that it is not later than we think, we have missed the boat so to speak, we have allowed for this space in our culture that is now filled with specters such as all Hallow`s eve.

I dont believe this guy. He lives in the 21st century and from this long history of Halloween, also well read. Yet he makes her little daughter cry by perventing her from having some innocent fun. Do you sir, tell little kids that there is no santa claus? Do you also agree with the witch burning of Salem? and have your stack of stones ready for any woman accused of adultry?

...... how come you didn`t tell us this before ?............i have been going out trick-or-teating with my kids for the past twelve years and always had one heck of a good time ......... they have dressed up as cinderealla, princess jasmine, little white ghosts, big fat peaches, esmeralda, beauty of the beast, and this year my older one was planning on going as a pedestrian (i guess she has grown out of it!) and the little one has her heart set on being a mummy ......``abu, i love mummies - i want to be an archaeologist when i grow up`` ...... so i figured it is an educational outing and the good lord really woudn`t mind sharing this one day with satan if it is for a good cause ............. now you tell me that it is bad, evil and some kind of devil worship ............ i am mortified ! ..... or is it mummified! .................

............. for satan`s sake, lighten up ! ............ carve a pumpkin, put some irish coffee in a flask and go out and have some fun .....don`t be a sitck in the mud - don`t ruin it for the kids with this silly nonsense about the terrible history of halloween - nobody knows and nobody cares ......... you can always make up to god by praying yourself silly during ramadhan !

P.S. ..... i did not read your dissertation past the first three lines so i still don`t know what halloween is all about ............ i don`t want to know ......... the day i found out that eid was all about some crazy old man trying to kill his son, i stopped having fun and started having nightmares .......... i wish i had never found out

I detest halloween. No self-respecting ghoul would dress the way these human kids do. And ghosts are meant to be heard and rarely seen.

On the serious side, this was certainly a needed article, to give people atleast the history behind this custom. ``Halloween is not funny business as Satan gets the last laugh``. For my personal belief system, halloween simply does not work. It could be alright, and definitely is, with a lot of other muslim parents, who go along with the teacher`s version of ``it`s all harmless fun and kids need to feel integrated into their society``, but then to each his own.
