I agree with most interactors that this is a funny piece. But folks, get a grip! There is some truth in this piece; it`s not the entire truth! There are many nice men and women who seek education abroad and remain true to their pious upbringing -- that is if they had pious upbringing.

For every negative incident that you encountered in your immediate social circles, there must be many positive ones too. Not all men who study and live abroad are gigolos and whore mongers, and similarly not all such women are sluts.

You suck Qumay!

Actually that Citizen Kane piece was fairly well written

Cheers.

Zeeshan: Disgust ? A hack ? Ouch ! It was not that bad. If I caused you that much pain, I apologise. The koolest thing about reading is that if one does not like something one can always STOP to read the piece.

If you are on the other hand feeling sadistic u should check out the trashy Bend It Like Beckham ripoff i almost wrote at http://qayyums.com/maq/prose.html . Now THAT was really the work of a hack.

Twisted: I get your point but i really didnt think when writing something like this one should say one way or the other. I think Nasihat oriented writing dates badly and ultimately does not really work. If you meant we should question it in real life, i am already there, way before ya :)

Ironman: Yup, the reverse case does exist. Have a couple of poems on that lying around here somewhere. Always meant to write a short story on that too, but never got round to it. either that or a friend of mine would have kicked my ass if i did. i think i will wrote one now and blame it on you. Actually this piece and the other before it are from a collection of short short snaps i put down in a couple of days about how people and kids deal with marriage. the idea was to look at it from various different aspects. there were actually a couple more pieces which if you are interested you can get a hold of at http://qayyums.com/maq/prose.html
Those i think balances out things a tad more and the idea was to put all of them across as a collection rather than only individually. i did make an effort to make each story work individually too.

smjafry: please send parents address. shall duly mail them a copy.

Mister Malik...

Biased me? Nah.

Flash fiction is very very hard to write. Not too many good short fiction writers can manage it.

I was merely sharing my disgust for his previous work for which I was too busy/lazy to write into Instep.

Are you saying that you post here so that some people may recognise and acknowledge the merits of your opinion and value it? Is that the actual purpose of criticism? To be lauded and bathed in honey? To be kissed and hugged at your ``polite`` insight?

I would appreciate it quite a lot if you spoke not about the spirit of chowk. The spirit here is to encourage whatever hack decides to click on the micrsoft word shortcut in the start menu.

Thank you for your time.

G`bye.

a must-read for my parents. both so they can get off my back and stop trying to forcefeed an amreeki-babu hubby down my sisters` throats.

maq: Its probably time to question whether `foreign qualified` is really worth it all, considering the fact that the rare innocents also get tarred with the same brush.

ironman: Yes, the reverse case exists. I remember when my female cousin from UK used to visit Karachi, the male cousins, friends, friends of friends would be lining up to get her hand in marriage and escape from here. There also used to be some speculation among some spiteful people wondering what the girl was upto in UK. The hypocrisy never ceases to amaze me.

nice and funny..

and honestly i am sure most of us can relate some of it with someone around us :)

besides, Zeeshanmahmud#6, although i like your stuff at times, i don`t think it is appreciable to have biases beyond repair. Don`t judge the author by just one previous work or on the basis of his relation to someother author you don`t approve of (ref: your comment on the author`s intro page!) And please your opinion might have some merit but this is not an healthy attitude and is against the spirit of chowk.

peace.

Stuka: Tainted gets 5 points. That was precisely part of the point when i wrote this piece. The character depicted here isn`t all that substantial too. Plus I like brief. Generally whittle down whatever i write in short stories to the bare essentials. A huge fan of Saki like that.

Zeeshan: Please chew me up one piece at a time. I will aim to please you more in the future. Comments beyond arsepickle would be more welcome :)

Twisted Delusion: What you are talking about was the standard situation. Me just wanted a move away from the same. Some kids just get tarred with the same brush as the philander. The idea was more that more of the kids that come back from abroad are losers than one imagines. Though they still retain a lot of bluster and bravado.

Aisha: Tafteesh ? :)

Would also be interesting to hear of the reverse...finding desi match for girl educated abroad ? Anyone know any cases like that?

the poor guy...poor loser.
But all the same, it was strange to learn that he could not find a girl. what i know of home, people are falling over themselves to get hold of a match with theis kind of credentials, whereas the case should be as the end of the story.
just a foreign thappa is such an attraction that most families fall for it, hook line and sinker, without carrying out the nessecary tafteesh. two of my friends fell for such guys, one US based who was a no gooder and in the end she came back and sought a divorce. the second one is married to a gulf/dabaee based loser with no mentionable credits apart from the fact that he could bring his wife here. her living conditions are another story.

This was kind of sad and funny at the same time. I agree with Rakaposh as well. I did feel sorry for the guy. A nice snapshot.

Hilarious. Reminds me of my cousin in the states and the events of his marriage. It makes me sick when its the rishta time and people say: ``Larka bahir ka parha hua hai. Green Card hai``. And fail to mention he`s a philanderer, gambler, druggie, casanova.

For the record they call it flash fiction.

This is smelly arsepickles but a definite improvement over the restaraunt review you did of this snobby eatery in Lahore a month ago for Instep. At least here we did not need to be told how many fabulous restaraunts you`d been to in Paris or London or how you were escorted by Mikal ``who cares`` Hasan.

simple and elegant indeed!

Not a whiff of `literature`. devoid of cynicism, arcanism, book-wormism, and obscurantism``.
Some people think that writing `insider-talk` adds prestige and aura to their writing. What is refered to as `eehaam-goyee` and `ibhaam-goyee` (I cannot think of english equivalents--sorry) in urdu exposition, both prose & verse, are as much a flaw in any language.

Nobody paints masterpieces. No one sets out to write literature. They become so, someday.

Again--simple & elegant should it always be--especially for those see-sawing between cultures and are druggedly confused.

good one, short and ingenuously portrayed which makes it interesting , looks like off the top of ur head;),though there is lot more to it isn’t it, at least no self pity when one afterall gets the FUN share.

A good write. Also highlighting a serious subject.

Marrying daughters off to foreign qualified without a 100% background chech has resulted in many horrible tragedies.

Some examples - paper marriage/actual marriage abroad, false degree, low menial job, jobless, drinking and womanizing habits. In some cases, schizofrenic with long lonely stay abroad or back to roots phenomenon of radical religionist or culture crazy.
