Adam Smith’s Invisible Hand and Kashmir

Dear Readers:
I would appreciate some comments on the subject matter of the article, namely, the economy of Kashmir in general and its linkages with that of India in particular, at least for the first few Interacts before getting into the politics of it. You might have noticed that the article stays clear of any political choices. As the cliché goes, aur bhi dukh hain zamane mein siyaasat ke siva!

The Invisible Hand - a theory that has such wide applicability, it is amazing.

When it comes to Kashmir ``It`s not just economics``, you say... I couldn`t agree more, but do not underestimate the (potential) positive impact of the same.
Having said that, i don`t know how much of the Invisible Hand we see in Kashmir - the economic successes mentioned are definitely fascinating (Law of Unintended Consequences??), but i feel the economic links need to become far more pervasive in order to see some adam smith-ian changes.


Mantolives (#1) - what do you mean by the `real book`? Unless I`m mistaken in what you are looking for, the book is available reasonably easily..

at the risk of you repeating yourself, or causing any further controversial arguments, could you tell me why you would rather support giving the valley to pakistan? i may have missed out on this before.

If by ``both sides``, you mean Indians and Kashmiris, I totally agree. Ultimately, that`s what will happen.

I do not want to sound like a prick by disagreeing with you, but why then was not the same right given to Punjabis? Till 1946 WE HAD A UNIONIST GOVERNMENT. Danga fasaad was started by Poorbiyas before spreading to Punjab.

I would rather support giving the valley to Pakistan then to have an independent Kashmir.

Abey kabhi to such bola kar. The Amount we have wasted on Kashmir if we would have spent on Punjab it would have like England. The biggest chors in Kashmir were the Kkashmiri Muslims themselves, pro-India, Anti-India ..all of them.

Very well written ... but sadly only a sophisticated version of Romair`s theory .. `Economics is everything`... Adam Smith`s `hidden hand` is such a double edged sword though... `greed` or `profit` ... a thin line separates the two. Its not just Economics... the grievances of the people run deep... a sense of history, disposession, and `occupation` pervades such issues... I don`t like commenting on Kashmir, but ultimately a fair and just solution acceptable to both sides is a must.

An aside ...Can anyone tell me if they have actually seen or read the real book `Inquiry into the wealth of nations` by Adam Smith? I have been trying to get a hold of it, but haven`t found it yet...
