Monty pyton was post-modern alright. But Paracha sahib is post-post-modern:) And my Indian friends should stop being so pre-modern regarding *BHARAT*.

your opinons, sir, and respect them, even though I believe Monty Python is quite post-modern. Anyway, not only do us Pakistani`s think Mr.Paracha is a crackling read but he`s pretty popular with British readers as well, especially with the members of BBC`s famous Spoiledink.Com. In fact, the site`s editor, Scot Dile, is quite an admirer of his.

I don`t think there is any comparison between the definition of Islam (the definition of Bharat is pathetic but harmless) and Judaism in the article. I don`t think the definition of kafir is all that insulting, either. I can imagine Zionists (not that they`d be here) pointing to articles like this, written by liberal Muslims and responses like yours from other liberal Muslims, and saying triumphantly, they really hate us all, we`ve got to keep protecting ourseves. It`s a pity you think that is humour. I have read the defences, but I thought they were pretty weak, not surprisingly so, written by people who think of Jews the way you all obviously do. I say this in spite of having been fed some awful latkes for Hannukah.
Monty Python is hardly post-modern, you know, and I`m not completely sure who Jagdeep is-oh, ok, I remember, he`s Javed Jaffrey`s dad. Monty Python`s still on all the time on ABC radio here, and all the other ones that the oldies listen to, I think he`s very good. One that was really good was the politicians speech. I think Ali G is incredibly good as well, because he`s so subversive-and he`s even handed with his appallingly poor taste. The funniest thing on TV ever, though, is something called Kath & Kim, which you will never see in the US, but Brits probably will. I did follow that you see Ash as one extreme of India- but it`s interesting that you have used Hinduism and India interchangeably. Of course my sense of humour is different from yours- I should certainly hope so, anyway. Anyone that agrees with what we say is reasonable and anyone who laughs at our jokes has a sense of humour. The author is ok, if he amuses Pakistanis, he`s doing his job, but he`s not a comic genius who deserves international acclaim.

Thanks for your post.
My post to Gujjubania was meant to educate him as to the trivialness of money in the larger scheme of things. I found him totally focussed on the money aspect of life. No doubt, as a young man, his life experiences are limited. I was offended when he went on arguing without a firm basis. To me rule of law, culture are more important than money itself. I probably did not make myself clear in that post.

Well said, trashman. ``Bharat`` as a burp they find insulting. ``Islam`` as a Pushtun name for bachelor’s party for would-be polygamists is fine? Well most of us Pakistanis found BOTH funny. We win. Kashmir hamara hai!! D.

It is surpeizing tha even after reading all 160 replys you`re still asking questions that more or less have already been answered, at least by us Pakistanis. Isn`t it clear that the judaism definition is a clear attack at the hard core Zionists who are creating an irony by doing to the Palastinians what the Nazis did to them? Same is the case with the Bharat definition. A satirical take of the sort of Bharat right-wing hindus would like to imagine. Ash on the other hand is playing the role of one extreme of India, used here to sarcastically describe the other extreme. I am surprized that none of our Indian friends reacted as strongly and humouressly about definitions of the words Islam, Fundamentalism and Kafir.
A pity, indeed. Anyway I shall not suggest you have no sesnse of humour for not liking Mr.Paracha`s style, however, I would suggest you start watching stuff like Monty Python, etc., instead of old Jagdeep flicks to appreciate post-modern satire.

This is completely fascinating. I didn`t think very highly of the article but the responses are worth studying in themselves. As is often the case with chowk.
I don`t know that just not agreeing with what the writer says makes people humourless. I`d really like to know, DrDr (what`s that nick for?) if your friend really has that programme. I sounds pretty interesting. Unfortuantely, writing styles are so culture specific-how does that work? A lot of people apparently in their 30s and 40s and 50s on chowk certainly write like teenagers, and their views are even more juvenile.I did think gujjubania writes like an older man, but I guess I`m happy to learn he`s not- some of us, though not all, do mellow with age.
I have a problem with a number of the author`s definitions. It`s scary that people think that way, supposedly liberal thinking people-I refer specifically to the Judaism one. Where does that leave the liberal Jews of the world who are willing to give the Palestinians a chance? How different is this attitude from the Nazis? The Jews can and do look after themselves, though, and probably couldn`t be bothered less about articles like this-sadly, they expect no more from any and all Muslims, so I guess I shouldn`t be bothered for them. Bharat is just unfunny but amuse your selves if you want, I guess. I don`t know what poor Ash has to do with the definition of Hinduism.
Sridhar, I wanted to say -because you are a doctor- that as a profession, we have exceptionally high IQ scores, and let`s face it, we`re probably as good a bunch of souls as you could find anywhere. For myself, I`m not a doctor because of the wages-they`re not the end, though they do pay for the VW/Beemer. Most of us are smarter than a lot of people who make more than us. (My friend`s ex-girlfriend was a stripper, and she used to make 3 times as much as he did!)I could make more money by being an internet porn enterpreneur or a heroin dealer, as two of my patients have been in the past- so I find your equation of success with money profoundly disturbing. It`s not quite like us...you were probably very angry.
Gujjubania, the IIT-JEEs aren`t too far away, so you shouldn`t be wasting time-your mum and dad are probably wringing their hands with despair!
Tahmed, 12 head hasn`t gone anywhere, his distinctive writing style shows him up, even right here. It`s not surprising that you would think his contributions more interesting than gujjubania`s -its all about what we want to hear. Unfortunately, there wasn`t a lot new in your exchange, was there?
Subroto, come off it, mate- G`day maayte is more like, aren`t we really the lucky country? I`ve just spent a glorious Xmas in the pool and on the beach-where else would you want to live? They`ve taken the loss fairly well, I think-so many people came up to me and said , our boys were getting a bit full of themselves, good thing the Indians took them down a notch. They still haven`t recovered from the rugby-and neither have I! In the meantime, I wait to hear what Shane Warne`s mum does next..

Your question is valid. But bulk of Paracha`s staunch ``cult`` following have always understood his lashings & pangs against multinational cpapitalism and relegious hippocracies. Those who don`t I think love their colas and burgers and tableegi beards a bit too much. They`re cozy in their worlds propagated to them by cola companies, corporate mongers, hip islamists and , in india, the bjp and cable tv. ;)

~NFP,
I finally understood your cola-battle.
Bravo~
NFP`s going on and on about how multinationals are screwing up whatever intelligence left in Pakisatan and India`s middle class youth for over a decade now. He`s usd his cutting satire, fiction, music reviews and what not push home the point. I just don`t understand why so many of his readers have taken so long to understand the method behind his anti-corporate and anti-organized-relegion rants?

rsridhar #153 I shall add the movie to my list of new year resolutions. It is important to understand the cultural backdrop that caused gujjubania to emerge from a Coke Hall. ;-)
