Shandana,
I couldn`t help bring it to notice.
I am notoriously famous for editing even wedding cards!
Regards,
Saman.

Jagjit Singh is not the only one who mentioned kuRti in a song....sadey Arif Lohar ne vi kuRti de vatt kadd ditey si.
kuRti O... tang kuRti...
wicho baddan jhaatiyan maarey.

saman,
noted. thank you. i usually run my articles past two editors, the husband and the editor of whichever publication i`m submitting to. grammar really isn`t my strong point as a writer :)
neither of them picked those out.

p.s: just asked my mother as well, the former language teacher, she`s quite horrified that i didn`t know that.

Shandana,
Saman is right you know. It should read kurtis. Not kurti`s.
Adnan`s explanation is awesome though :)))). Here naming a place singular is a significant busines risk!
Cheers, write more

adnan_rafiq:
I understand the significance of an apostrophe on a shop/boutique board.
As far as I know, the apostrophe has three uses:
1) to form possessives of nouns
2) to show the omission of letters
3) to indicate certain plurals of lowercase letters.
Hence, the significance of its use in the sentences I`ve quoted is beyond my comprehension.
I guess its the language editor in me.

shandana: absolutely scintillating! Now you`re obligated to do a dhoti expose` for us.
samankhan: the apostrophe is how the urban elite of Pakistan makes a desi creation chic. For example, you can open up a boutique in Clifton, Karachi and call it `Saman Khan`. No self-respecting burger would venture in your direction. Add an apostrophe, call it `Saman Khan`s`, and voila! You can sell a bohri bazar dress for Rs. 30,000 and no one would question you. Behold, the power of the apostrophe!

Yeah, they are a rage in India too.
But pardon me, why the apostrophe?
Kurti’s are the little shift type garments...
Kurti`s are the intelligent, educated and financially...
No one is really sure whether short kurta’s have always existed...
Both kurti’s and kurta’s start at about the same...
Just wondering...

My first kurti
a gift from the missus early on in the courtship
is still unworn. Innocent me when questioned that night said it was too short. Thank God cold silences are hard to decipheron long-distance phone calls.
Second one
a cute long-sleeved maroon thingie made out of t-shirt material with some neat embroidery
we bought together at Commercial St. last weekend. Already worn once, so my marriage is safe for now.

How did you come up with this topic? I must say a very good & sensitive observation.
The word `Kurti` has been in Punjabi language since I was born. It always meant a light casual summer girl/woman shirt. It sounds light & feminine.
But Jagit`s song has made it immortal. The song brings out the most delicate, sensuous and poetic expression to that subtle female urge to be mildly suggestive. And it is all wrapped up in the song in the best of Punjabi ethos & aroma.
The song also talks about the `Jutee Khal dee murara nae jhaldee` - the light shoe can not withstand the twists & turns of the Punjabi mutiar.
All in all - a really good song - lyrics, voice, expression. It is subtlity at its best.

Re:#2 Saminasha
I think its already in. I`ve seen Kurta/Kurti alikes at Macy`s: the kind Enrique Iglesias wears.
But after reading this I am confused. Is that a Kurti, or a Kurta?
I always thought of Kurti being a `mom-pops-word` for a short Kurta.
What is the difference?

``No one is really sure whether short kurta’s have always existed, but research suggests this form has never been so effectively phonetically articulated before.``
I beg to differ. Didn`t Jagjit Singh, forever immortalize the, ``kurti`` in:
Dhai din na jawani hai jhall di kurti malmal di
With, its most famous line being:
Patli kurti de vichchon di, roop jhatiyan marey
Seems like the village folk got onto the kurti bandwagon, far before the city folks figured it out.....
