Hellbound:
Lt. General Talat Masood did not mind the Punjabi majority when:
``* he commanded the Punjabi majority ``
Hhe would have in any case. Chakwal gave a lot of soldiers before Partition. Even in Indian Amry, at least in general cadre lot of Punjabis from Potohar are there.
``* he led the Punjabi majority to death for vain causes ``
Who decided the causes? Kkashmir was a cause from 1947 on. Why blame Punjabis. The 1965 war was bright idea of Bhutto. Bhutto refused to share power in 1971. Punjabis of Pakistan are surely guilty of mule-like following policies but the policies originated elsewhere.
``* Punjabi majority made him a Lt. General ``
There are plenty of Mohajir, Pathan generals also.
``* Punjabi majority served him and his family for 30 long years
* Punjabi majority gave him agricultral lands and plots in Defence Karachi & elsewhere
* Punjabi majority gave his prodigy an a life-long status of blue-bloodedness ``
As did elites of Mohajir and other communites.
``* Punjabi majority tolerates his comments and his expert analyis ``
This one does not make sense.

``Who fought the last wars with each other - Punjabis
Where were the Wars fought - Punjab
Who suffered maximum during the Wars - Punjabis ``
and who instigated the wars in the first place? Poorbiyas. The Muslim League was all Bihari, Bengali and UP landed gentry. Punjab was ruled by Unionists.

as an urdu speaking ``muhajir`` i too don`t like what HP is implying about muhajirs :). However i must say i doubt that MQM represents the views of all or even a majority of muhajirs.
A question though: why must we insist on being punjabi/pathan/sindhi/muhajir/balochi? taking pride in ethnicity is one thing and preferring it over nationality is another.

Say what you will about Punjabis, and I`m no admirer, I`d rather they were on my side than against me. Wouldn`t you? I don`t think you can blame them for everything bad about India, and non-Punjabi Pakistanis aren`t angels either. What do you think our man Omar is? You don`t have to like everything they do, and you can always tell them to shut up if they`re too loud. As a Bengali, I look suspiciously at anyone who makes money..I look suspiciously at myself when my managed funds are doing well, which in itself is a rare event.

Happy to learn you like canoodling. Alas, the west has corrupted you. It`s probably harder to canoodle in Delhi than in Bombay or Bangalore...however, I can only suggest you try it for yourself.

Ha!Ha! Ha! Obviously you never met real Pakistanis. Most of the guys you met on ships were clearly of barely middle class families. Some may be from Mohajir type families, where playing cards is still a taboo-Against religion- perhaps.
Well `mujahjir type?` its strange that mahajirs aka urdu speakings are taught of like that --while we are the most educated (proved) and most moderate type of Pakistan. Theres no doubt that Urdu Speaking Coummunity is the most `educated and richest in the country` + we are most secular in Pakistan (MQM our political representative reflects our views) we are middle class people (lower / mid and upper middleclass).
I dont want to attack Punjabis or Phatans or any other our our brothers its that facts should be put straight foward infront of people who still watch and believed what PTV says.
Hp get a life !

``If we manage to keep afloat in future without being colonized by Americans or Chinese, it would be as good as your Napoleonic fantasies.``
Have to agree with that, it is going to take some time before we can even think of being a global role player. Nonetheless, why shy away from even hoping for such a future?
And on a more serious note, which lawns are you talking about where the young are seen ``canoodling``? How does one become part of the house party scene in Islamabad? Do people canoodle in India (in public places) as well? People canoodle a lot in the west. I`ve seen it with my own innocent eyes. I like canoodling.

Veeresh Ji,
The tone and mood of this part of the travelogue was very different from the preceding ones. Earlier, you were exploring and at times, also trying to validate your understanding of Pakistan. This time the opera and merchant navy led to disconnect; it is tough for a lower middle class Indian like me to understand the intricacies of opera. I hope people will ask more questions about these things and you`ll be kind enough to explain them during interaction.
``If there is one sentiment I believe in, then that is this - India and Pakistan can, as separate countries but with motive forces together, rule the world.``
Any kind of romantic relationship between India and Pakistan even if it is for the noble cause of ``ruling the world`` is a pipedream that Punjus from either side smoke when they are high on whiskey :-) If we manage to keep afloat in future without being colonized by Americans or Chinese, it would be as good as your Napoleonic fantasies.

NHK:
What is your definition of a Punjabi? Why are the liberals so self-deprcating?
Nikki:
You are absolutely right that we have lot of things in common, but none of the things that you mention.
Consider this for a change:
``We`` nurtured Buddhism when they were persecuted elsewhere in Indian
``We`` gave you a religion that safeguarded you for centuries.
``We`` died for you while you multiplied
``We`` endured the invaders` wrath while you slept in your temples full of gold
``We`` continue to suffer while you move to greener pastures!
You are right we do belong together but for reasons other than you mention!

Agreed. If India & Pakistan can coalse togather peacefully as normal independent states, they do no need the rest of the world. (there is no need to rule the rest)
I think this peaceful co-existance is possible, finally...
