It appears that the forum is split between Shaukat Aziz and the apparent absence of an MNA aspirant for the slot. All over, the local opinion also appears split. There are voices going hoarse that the messiah has arrived and all would be well thereafter. I would just confine my comments to the prformance.

Pakistan`s economic team by no means was led by Shaukat Aziz. He was only the minister of the Finance. State Bank being autonomous was led by Dr. Ishrat. Dr. Ashfaq was responsible for the crafty debt management. Hafeez Sheik headed the ministry of investments and privatisation. Industeries was led by another minister.

The credit for Pakistan`s fiscal reserves primarily goes to the ministry of overseas Pakistanis that exported this manpower, State Bank and Dr. Ashfaq for the crafty kerb policies and interventions in the local markets and expats who diverted their money from the Hundi to national banks. In this regard efforts of State Bank to channelise the nation banks is also praise worthy.

The credit that goes to Shaukat is the impovement in revenue mainly because of the lopsided sales tax, which remains a levy rather than a VALUE ADDED TAX. It is something like extortion.

Eversince Shaukat took over, no foreign investments have come to Pakistan other than the cell phones of PTCL. Gawadar was a direct contract between the two governments in which the ministry of finance moved in much later. If anything, this ministry has been scaring away investors.

It was common knowlegde that all was not well between Hafeez Sheikh. His efforts were continously stalled by the ministry of finance. Though more qualified and fired up to perform, this stallion was held in check.

What were the interests in doing so? Personal rivalries or not allow Pakistan to become economically independent??

We have to getover the euphoria that a new savior is coming, yet as a Pakistani I wish it is so.

Mantolives - Just because I oppose your illogical and misplaced criticism of Mullahs does not mean that I am a ``supporter of Mullahs``. This is the problem with ``you people`` that you go around labeling others (Rush Limbaugh style). If I criticise pakistan, then I must be a hindu-lover. If I am against the killing of civilians in Wana, then I must be the taliban-sympathizer ! If I don`t agree with a ``conservative stance`` then I must be a bleeding heart liberal !

You wrote ``Mullahs extremely organized, militant and fanatical bunch... they just don`t walk up to the parliament... they burn things on the way.... they are actively involved in Murders, killing, and arson outside the assembly... and they are actively involved in sabotaging progressive legislation within it.``

That is a very accurate description of our army and ISI !!! The only thing i would add is that they are also involved in the use of gunship helicopters on civilians.

You asked - ``We know where the RICH people got their money but WHERE did the Mullahs get their money from ?``

Actually we DON`T know where the elite got enough money to enable them to own towns and villages and the inhabitants living in them. It weren`t mullahs who advised Nawaz Sharif to create artificial sugar shortage in Pakistan and then have his Ittefaaq Conglomerate make exclusive deals with Indians to import sugar to pakistan.

and finally you say ``the real issue is one... the existence of Mullah in a religion which is not supposed to have any mullahs.``

FYI - there is a long list of things which we have added in our religion and our society today which are not supposed to be there. Its just that Mullah is not at the top of that list. But there are some people who for completely illogical reasons would like us to keep our minds occupied by mullahs so that we don`t turn our attention to the real and more dangerous criminals amongst us.

Romair - Indeed this is a great day for Canada and for all the people of many cultures living in Canada. Canada represents the BEST that West has to offer. Unlike its southern neighbour, it does not merely preach the right of free speech, it ACTUALLY practices it.

I have lived in Canada for a couple of years and I have great admiration for its spirit of tolerance, and compassion and its ``multi-culturalism``.

And the Muslims should never forget that when thousands of muslims were fleeing US for their safety after september 11 and overwhelming Canada`s border posts with assylum applications, Canada did not close its border to these refugees who were adherents of the most hated faith.

Indeed, Vive le` Canada !

I would say vive le pakistan; what does canada have? nothing. First of all they have an uncontrolled democracy while we have a controlled democracy, so there, vive le pakistan. I did not see canadian soldiers climibing the walls of canadian parliment hill because we know white man can`t jump whereas in Pakistan patli patli taangoN waalay jehlumi faujis can climb all kinds of walls - from parliament to presidency to prime minister house to radio and television stations. Our faiji jurnails can beat any canadian kothay tapni anywhere, see them rollover when america whistles - viva le pakistan. Knayda murdabad. Knayda kutta hai hai, Knayda paapi hai hai.

Urstruly # 132 - ha ha . Well put !!! and these ``patli patli taangoN walay`` fauji who do not hesitate to kill pakistani civilians, have yet to win us a war with our neighbours.

And that is despite eating 40% of our yearly budget !! Now where the fuk is this budget going? According to some, the army may be eating 40% of our national budget but it is Mullahs who are getting fat!! This does not seem to be logical, unless the army has a very active digestive system and metabolism rate.

malik

and by the way, the other day the tv showed jamali and fazlur rehman hugging each other while saying farewell to jamali. It was quite a humbling scene to see both men touch only at their rims while their hands were struggling to reach each other`s shoulders. I was wondering if they are put in jail together in one cell then they wont be able to choke each other to death because their hands cannot reach each others necks.

Mantolives writes ``I lived in the US for four years till 2002 for my College Education ... I didn`t find the discrimination people like you keep harping on about. Nor was I target of any hate crimes... If you don`t act suspicious ... I don`t see why you would be accused of anything``

I too don`t see any reason either why one should be accused of anything if he does not ``look`` suspicious. But hundred of american muslims who were put behind bars without trial, thousands who were deported, tens of thousands who were finger printed, and millions who continue to live under the shadow of the draconian Patriot Act may, just mayyyyy, disagree with you a tad bit.

I really think you should reflect upon the way you debate. You have once again made this broad, unqualified statement about american muslims which does not hold any water. And calling me ``mama`` or saying ``mullahs are rich`` and ``mullahs drive landcruisers`` are the kind or arguments I don`t find enticing enough to engage in. Sincerely.

Mog...

Somehow that was not the case 55-60 years ago... when all of our Mullahs were in Congress Party`s pocket... especially the Ahrar party... who was the biggest Islamist movement of its kind ... which ironically was accusing the Muslim League of being Kemalist but was amazingly allied with the Secular Congress Party... something was wrong there. Especially how after 1947... the same Congress supporting Mullahs who wanted a United India i.e. Ahrar and Khaksars came to Pakistan and started to demand an Islamic theocracy... The Mullahs are sell outs... and you people are their oldest clients... shall I go back to the Khilafat movement?

Malik99...

I don`t wish to continue my discussion with an expat who wants to obfuscate ... I will say this.. you brought in the rich people because you mistakenly thought I was filthy rich... wealth was never an issue... what was on trial was how purchaseable the Mullahs are...

There is no denying that the fact that the MMA leadership has been bought and sold more times anyone else in our history. Denying it is only denying history...

Have fun in New Jersey or whereever ... it is easy to support Mullahs when you don`t have to endure them on a daily basis.

Manto yaar, let the Mullahs actually come to power once. You will be proven right for all time to come within a few months.

The Mullahs talk big when they are in opposition. They don`t do shit when they are in power.

I would love to see Mullahs come to power and stand up to US, take Kashmir by force from India, repress their own populations as per their rule in NWFP and still make Pakistan a success story.

Khamkhwa ki museebat...

I would imagine the amount a$$ whooping you get on a regular basis from every single Chowkie on Unplugged would have made you learn your lesson... but clearly you are incurable, or maybe `Ab to adat see ho gayee hai tujh ko` ...

Anyway have a nice day...

mantolive - you wrote ``you brought in the rich people because you mistakenly thought I was filthy rich.``

Not really. I brought in rich people simply to make as generalized a statement as you had made and to elicit the infuriated response. My objective was pretty simple - to show you that when you paint others with broad brush, others will paint you back with the same broad brush. Thats all.

And the kind of BROOOOAAAAADDDD logic that you use, if you were to use similar tactics in a political science class in US, either the professor will walk out on you or he will ask you to leave the class room. In fact he might just go beyond it and make a call to the College administration and have you banned from campus. And he will not stop at that. And I only shudder with horror as to what next steps he may take. ~shudders~

Huma Mir...

I have neither the inclination nor the time to continue this debate... especially when it will now become personal with insults flying all over... now that Khamkhwa is joining in. l I can say is that you chaps have deliberately drawn this tangent... I don`t care about American Muslims ... or their travails beyond my own family that lives there... and thankfuly none of them have ever felt the burden of the patriot act... mashallah all of them are doing very well... and I wish them all the best.

I already explained in my post what I mean by Mullahs... but in any event I have no respect for people who sell Islam professionally... as a Muslim it is my religious belief that Islam does not allow for any clergy... and very existence of the Mullah is aberration. These Mullahs are disgusting creatures whose very existence is the anti-thesis of the ideology of Islam. I hate the Mullahs because I am an extremely intolerant Muslim... so there... now you know of my bigotry. I am proud of it.

As my hero (I am sure you all know who that is by now) said once `Every Muslim is his own priest` ... His favorite phrase for the Mullahs was `These Mad Mullahs...`

I agree! Damn these Mad Mullahs...

Enough said...

Mantolives - I just read your ilog where you called me a ``piece of shit`` and ``asswipe``. hmmm...sounds like you ran out of arguments. I suggest that you take lessons on logic and public speaking from some mullah, ANY mullah. That way you will become just as successful as they are in convincing people of your stance.
