your thesis is acceptable as far as post partition scenario is concerned. But that was not my question. My question was why during the pre-british era when the alleged holocaust of Hindus were happeneing, their places of worship were being destroyed, the birthplaces of their dieties were being converted into mosques, and millions of hindus were being killed, their women were being raped - why not at that time Hindu nationalism emerged. What happened during Partition seems to be a local riot as compared to what is alleged as the holocaust of Hindus in pre-British era. Not even during the most hated Mughal Aurangzeb there emerged a Hindu nationalism. For reasons evident one cannot accept the anarchy created by Marhattas, Sikhs, Nizams, etc. as a manifestation of Hindu nationalism. No it wasn`t.

urstruly: the reason hindu nationalism did not arise when aurangzeb was pushing them around is the same reaons shia nationalism did not arise when the same aurangzeb was pushing them around - the reason being that nationalism as a concept was essentially non-existent at the time. There were marhatta revolts and what not, and those came closest to nationalism. And even then, it was basically one damned king vs another damned king while the poor folks and footsoldiers (hindu or muslim) did the dying.
Vous comprehend, mon ami??

I don`t know if you are aware of that or not but shias were able to establish not one but two independent states - provided we accept your thesis.

#152 amit great post.
does not address urstruely is because he wants to see nationalism as hindus uniting against muslims. else he wants to say that the razing of temples is a figment of recent hindutva imagination.
ursy, the hindu revolt was multi-faceted, with the marathas clearly supporting the ``hindu`` cause (shivaji personally did re-instate few temple deities razed by Adilshahi Turks and decalre himself as Go-Brahman Pratipalak or savior of cows and brahmins).
the political hindu manifested as a bhakti poet posing a strong bulwark against tyranny, as well as local chieftains (marathas or bundelas) establishing local rule respectful of hindu traditions. so, the hindutva then was not the kind which united everyone claiming that hindu religion is in danger, but through more subtle ways. even strong proclaimed hindu nationalist like shivaji had all kinds of muslim officers in his admin. in short, this political hindutva was all about establising self-rule, respectful of hindu traditions, not about wiping out muslims.
clearly, the political hindu won .. he survived where everyone, even the mighty persians submitted to islam. hindu tolerated isalm as a valid for spiritual fulfilment but did not submit. the proof is in the pudding.

That does it. People, if you know french, good for you. I`m impressed you learnt this, or like learning it, but please do not write incorrectly. Use the translation tool on google to correct your spellings if you have to.
tahmed_trente_deux: it is: ``Vous comprenez? mon ami?``
To quote from the article:
``there are other customs like reciting holy verses in the ear of a newly born``
Is`nt that an arab tradition as well?

Barachota #167,
I like you :)
But reunification is taking things a little too far. Let`s agree to live as friends. That should be enough, no?

I had called Nazar Khan a `brave machochist` for a reason. The emotions here are too high! No matter what you write, somebody will misread you.
