What? What did you expect after Godhra? Did you expect that Hindus will roll over and play dead? Or just whine?

Thanks for all the info. You are right about the cultural stuff, also education and civic facilities. What I mean by unfair comparison is that port cities have an inherent advantage wrt heavy/petrochemical industries and associated stuff, also in being international transit points for trade/travel from inland. (Why do you think the British were in Bombay, Madras and Calcutta?) IMO, an `equivalent` Indian city to Lahore needs to be inland and centred in a agriculturally strong and semi-industrial zone. Pune might fit better than Bangalore.

If Chennai`s advantage is that it is a port city, then one would expect Chennai to have a large labor class, not one interested in culture, arts and education. Nor should there be an advantage in healthcare or IT. Did I mention that 60% of the music and dance performances in December are free and open to the public?
By the way, while it is true that the December music season is the biggest, there are year-round cultural activities. We just had the concert series for Ganesh Chaturthi, followed by one for Krishna Jayanthi, followed by the one for Navratri/Dussehra. Soon December will be upon us and that will be followed in March by Ram Navmi celebrations. In fact, there may be just a few days in a year when you don`t have a FREE performance somewhere in the city center.
Bangalore`s Indian Institute of Science was there much much before Hindustan Aeronautics, the National Aeronautics Labaratories, Electronics and Radar Development Establishment or Bharath Electronics Limited. By the way, Bangalore holds its cultural celebrations at about the same time as Chennai (with the exception of a December season) and is rife with cultural societies all over the city sponsoring cultural activities.

It doesn’t. India is a hopeless case. I still wouldn’t put any money in India. There’s always the occasional great success story, but the Indian government is hopeless. The infrastructure is a disaster. India talks a good game but not with my money. In China, I could use my mobile phone all over the country. In India, you have to buy a separate mobile phone in each city. And those guys claim to be the great IT leaders of the world. If you walk into the shops in India, you see computers that are three years behind what you would get in New York. Most phones there don’t work at all. It is a bureaucratic and chauvinistic nightmare. I went there very optimistic. But the reality close to the ground was not with my money. And the country, of course, is going to split up. It is not a real country. The English mushed it together in 1947 in a panic and the borders of India as we know it will not survive.
