This is interesting. The same logic applies to why its ok for little girls to wear blue pants and a shirt but unimaginable for little boys to wear a pink dress. I think its because we are all a product of male sustenance. Women can be good enough to be male. It is progress, but men can`t stoop low to be women, that`s backward and shamefully funny.
Farzana, I wonder why people point to your honesty of thought - because this is how we think, with freedom of thought movement, and a basic connection - as ``shooting arrows in all directions.`` It is the most truthful people, who are most creative. We`ve become so used to structures. I detest artificial boundaries on natural writing of a brilliant mind.
Anyone who has gone though breast-feeding knows how frustratingly misplaced fascination with breasts is. Might as well cut them off and serve them on a platter for disgruntled and frustrated men. Real slap in the face for objectification.
Beauty is complete when painted on a static canvas of changing reality, when looked at holisticaly, not in isolation.

Dear Farzana,
When thousands of female foetuses are aborted before even they reach the age of viablilty, when thousands of brides are burnt because of inadequate dowry, when still girls are served food after the boys have eaten, when girls are not sent to school(they will babysit the younger brother),those who complete schooling are not sent to college (it is too far...),when still in the matters related to marriage,a vast majority of girls are not even asked what their choice is....,how relevent it is to ``talk to Mallika Sheravat`s breasts``...?

Hot air. For all the on-street experience you claim, your articles on current affairs dont seem to reflect that. They read like a term-paper written by a person in Gender Studies class, all that person had to do was read newspapers and magazines. While it may get a well-deserved A for a well-written piece, for readers like us it gives little other than a Ghissa-Pitta perspective on current events.
Us admirers deserve better based on your street-on-the-feet experience.

Farzana you started with Mallika but deviated to Erin Brockovich & Paula Jones. Would have been better if the focus had been on the changing attitudes in India instead of US where it is passe. Why only Mallika, what about the increasing number of item number girls that are cropping up all over the place. I remember seeing this interview on the Shekhar Suman show where the lady was taking about a dance show she did in a small town and was approached by a married woman after the show who told her ``aap nay humko hott kar diya``. Ab tum mano Yana mano.
And for the admirers of Linda Lovelace, as it turns out, she was threatened, raped and forced to do all those movies. So while she made countless men happy, her own life was more like a horror movie.

Normally i do not like to interact at the forum that has this writer as the author, but this sentence was too good to pass by without a comment:
(And unlike the Aishwariya Rais who simper and giggle, most of these girls can talk cogently and make their point clearly. If you look at their sensational quotes, you might find some truth in what they are saying.)
So, what is this author`s problem?
Aishwarya Rai is now the stuff that dreams are made of. Her interview on CBS showed her to be both vocal and intelligent. Just as in the old days, Helen of Troy`s fame helped sail a thousand ships, Aishwarya Rai`s famed beauty has resulted in more than a 1000 websites solely dedicated to her by her fans.
One can read her interview on CBS by going to this Url:
http://www.cbsnews.com/stories/2004/12/29/60minutes/main663862.shtml
BTW, this woman etched her place in history when her staute was unveiled in Madame Tussaud`s. http://www.expressevents.com/tussauds/
Mallika Sherawat has got only her boobs to show. I have seen one of her movies and that is all she got. Aishwarya Rai`s role was noted in Chowker Bali. Her recent film Raincoat (also set in the backdrop of calcutta) is being noted for her good performance.
A good actor evolves with time. This is what Ms Rai is doing. Actors like Sherawat go downhill. As i said before, they have little else to show.
(As for Mallika’s comment, let me ask you: Do you know of any woman who has got silicon implants to help in research or because she wants to be a well-padded mamma to her nursing infant? I don’t.)
Cheap mindset begets cheap talk. With peanut sized brains, it is not surprising she makes such cheap statements. She has shown that she can only wallow in jealousy and self-pity.

Farzana, I`m not sure of the stats in India, but in both Australia and the US, breast reduction surgeries are more common. Often the health service will pay for these if someone has really large breasts(sorry for indelicacy) and severe pain in the neck and back, so it may not come under purely cosmetic surgery.

I don’t understand how the title is misleading…the lady says men talk to her breasts, so by saying “let’s talk…” I was trying to indulge in a dialogue that would take us to what the body conveys and how women project it and are rewarded/punished for it.

[Regarding Paula Jones, I dont think Men will buy Penthouse for an over-the-hill PJones. Their idea of solitary entertainment is facilitated by nubile east european women. I didnt read that issue (or even see it) but I`d suspect Phouse hoped to get publicity via Paula`s clinton connection. Again I dont see the problem with her Phouse appearance (for the money).]
The point is not about men, but about her making that decision and realising her role as a single mother. Strange that an over-the-hill Clinton can sell a book that shamelessly declares, “I did because I could”.
Sure, there are thousands of women who make an honest buck by posing nude, but people like Paula have to live with the baggage; people do not question those other women about their moral position.

I wasnt sure what the point of the article was.. maybe it is
But, is that why Mallika Sherawat and Paula Jones have been ridiculed? The reason is simpler: They do not try to save their ass by talking about saving society.
maybe it is something strange about me.. I havent seen any of her (MS) movies but she has a lot of favorable coverage on the media and spices her interviews (any news is good news in terms of publicity).. She casts a very favorable impression as far as I can tell and manipulates the media as she wills. Good for her. Maybe she is a marilyn monroe wanna be. All power to her.
yes, I do find it strange that people like A Rai make a big hoo haa about kissing. beats the heck out of me. Maybe it has to do with her parents or whatever (or her PR image). She is not liberated/honest in that sense (sexually).

There are thousands of lesser known women featuring in porn all over the world. They do it to make a honest buck and are completely aware of the tradeoff. So what ?

Farzana Versey: one of the few authors who manage to shock me - always, without fail. Others being Manto and Ismat Chughtai. And again, this makes me skeptical about my claim of being a `progressive`. But seriously, if someone to ask me if there is a modern-day version of Ismat Chughtai, I`d say without hesitation - Farzana Versey. But after reading writings such as these, I am an even bigger fan of her iLogs, which so reminds me of a remark that Manto made after being `disappointed` after meeting Ismat: `the wretch turned out to be a mere woman afterall`. That holds true of Farzana as well. (http://www.urdustudies.com/pdf/16/21_Manto_IsmatChughtai.pdf)
I don`t agree with all that written above, but I am forced to re-examine my reality - again and again - and I thank you for that.

Farzana, since you ask, here`s a thought. A hundred years ago, medical researchers often performed experimental procedures on themselves. I wouldn`t put it past a researcher to get implants as part of a research project...I`m only half joking!
It`s interesting that in shows like Extreme Makeover where participants have cosmetic surgery, almost all women opt for implants. Whereas in the general population, women are more likely to have breast reduction procedures!
Please give me a hint about this well-known socialite............my ex-Bombayite radar`s buzzing.
Yes, warpster, any surgeon will warn you about breast feeding with breast implants. It is not some little-known fact.

I see this a bit differently. People take advantage of the best resources available to them at any given time. Male pop stars, from Elvis to Mick Jagger to Ricky Martin to Eminem have used overt sexuality in their stage acts. Also, men in Hindi cinema are increasingly dropping their shirts, waxing their chests…they too are taking advantage of what is a ‘natural’ talent.
For me a Mallika Sherawat who is straightforward about her approach towards her own body is any day better than a Kareena Kapoor who makes it seem that an innocent act between lovers (kissing) is sinful, while she is ready to flaunt her assets for the whole world.
[Morality is a difficult one to tackle. Every culture and society has set its own values. What works in one culture/society does not work in another. Linda Lovelace is now married, has children, and evidently lives a normal life on Long Island. In how many cultures/societies would that have been possible?]
What you call morality, I would call a value system. In the latter you make choices depending on the social environment, not on a stratified ‘code’. You are right about cultural differences, but in this piece I have talked essentially about the standards applied to two sets of people within one culture: a starlet vs. an actress with backing; a woman who uses her assets for a cause vs. one who does it to support her kids and maybe a better standard of living.

The sculptures of Ajanta were also for ‘show-sha’ only…if by purpose you are implying that fewer women are breast-feeding their children, then it was true a few years ago; there is a return to this and many other natural aspects. In India the main culprit was the multinational formula milk companies that created a more desirable alternative with disastrous consequences for not the well-off woman, but the slum-dweller etc. (I have scripted and help shoot an A/V on the subject, so I know what I am talking about…but that is not the theme here…)

What does it prove? Even if it was a strategy, she was the one who employed it to further sex up her act…the hits on her search reveal more about such a society, less about her.

Vulnerable minds have already got attuned to girlie magazines…why would you think a Paris Hilton who had money and fame resorted to what might be termed “lowly measures”? Are women who cling to men, fully clothed, as trophy wives sending out the right messages?
What about the women parading naked in support of the ethical treatment of animals? Or the female senior citizens who posed nude for a calendar for a cause? I think this sort of brainwashing is far more dangerous.

There is nothing to imagine about a man talking about his penis…their obsession comes across in several ways. If you felt sexually harassed after reading this, think about what women go through…and FYI, there are nude paintings of men…Indian temple sculptures have given equal prime time to men as well as women. I just read that Michelangelo’s ‘David’ in Florence is going to be protected by jets of air…
Contemporary artists have used the male body…and male strip clubs aren’t exactly providing stimulus for discussing quantum physics.

Gross reflections of attaining power… Man or woman… the lust is always there. Not just sexually or for money.. it’s the urge for power that makes us do what we might not do otherwise.
Well I remember a lady judge being appointed in our district courts some 4-5 years ago. It was her first appoint as a judge and she was deputed in her home town which is a big city and judges use all their resources to get appointed there. Well it was quite surprising for all of us so one of our colleagues mentioned it in front of the honorable lady and said that Mam you must be having good “SIFARISH” that you got your first appointment in your own city and to our amusement the lady replied…..
“maere sifarish to maeray sath lagi hoi hay… I don’t need any other sifarish”
Now that was plucky….
Yahya Jamil-Ul-Haq talks about branding nations.. I guess men should also enter the competition and start thinking of some part of their body to be branded in a manner that it can be exposed to be used as their “sifarish”… I hope I’m not being mean ...

Godot,

Many in Pakistani movie Industry have a happy family life after a long career in seedy side of the Industry.
Deep Throat came out long before many here were even born. I never saw the movie but I have heard that it was a pioneering movie.
Do you know what is common between Linda Lovelace and Bermuda Triangle?

In best traditions of ccnp (chowk cutnpaste)
TAMPA, Florida (AP) -- Radio giant Clear Channel Communications has come under fire from women`s health advocates over a Christmas contest in which stations granted breast enlargement surgeries to women in four cities.
In the ``Breast Christmas Ever`` contest, 13 women were awarded the procedure after writing essays to the stations explaining why they wanted larger breasts. A Tampa station claimed to receive more than 91,000 entries.
Clear Channel said it had nothing to do with the contest and that it was a decision by local station managers to hold the promotion. The contest was aired on Clear Channel stations in Tampa, Jacksonville, St. Louis and Detroit.
The contest has drawn the ire of both the National Research Center for Women & Families and the National Organization for Women. NOW has urged its supporters to file complaints with the Federal Communications Commission against Clear Channel and its stations.
The controversy comes within months of Clear Channel paying a record $1.75 million fine to resolve indecency complaints against New York-based shock jock Howard Stern, Tampa radio personality ``Bubba the Love Sponge`` and others. The station formally agreed to ``clean up its act,`` FCC Chairman Michael Powell said in June.
While neither women`s group is alleging the breast surgery contest violated decency standards, they are complaining the contest promotes potentially dangerous surgery and leaves its winners with no legal remedies should the surgery go awry. Under the rules, winners must be at least 18 and sign a waiver protecting the company from all liability claims.
``I try not to be judgmental about whether a large radio station should be giving away free toys to children instead of free breast augmentation,`` said Diana Zuckerman, president of the National Research Center for Women & Families, a health advocacy organization.
NOW is urging the public to send e-mails to Clear Channel and the FCC to complain about what it considers a ``degrading and unethical contest.`` About 3,400 messages have been sent to the FCC and Clear Channel, NOW said Monday.
Jennifer Gery, a spokeswoman for Clear Channel, said the company had no oversight of the contests and didn`t sponsor them.
``There is no reason to be concerned because it`s not a Clear Channel-sponsored contest, Gery said. ``We empower our local manager to make programming decisions.``
David Fiske, a spokesman for the FCC, said the agency does not regulate the content of radio station contests unless it violates decency standards. The FCC only requires radio stations to conduct contests exactly by the stated rules and to fully disclose the terms of the contest.
NOW has been active in lobbying the Food and Drug Administration against the marketing of silicone breast implants and has an ongoing ``Love Your Body`` campaign aimed at countering what it says are unrealistic body images promoted in the entertainment industry.

A warning to would be mothers (who intend to breast feed)
Can I Breast-Feed with Breast Implants?
Frequently Asked Questions
Breast implants may interfere with your ability to successfully breast-feed. With respect to the ability to successfully breast-feed after breast implantation, one study reported up to 64% of women with implants who were unable to breast feed compared to 7% without implants. The periareolar incision site may significantly reduce the ability to successfully breast-feed.
At this time it is not known if a small amount of silicone may diffuse (pass through) from the saline breast implant silicone shell and may find its way into breast milk. If this occurs, it is not known what effect it may have on the nursing infant. Although there are no current methods for detecting silicone levels in breast milk, a study measuring silicon (one component in silicone) levels did not indicate higher levels in breast milk from women with silicone-filled gel implants when compared to women without implants.

Breats may come,
Breasts may go,
Some are good,
Some are bad,
For each pair,
Let`s be glad.
Mallika`s breasts are fine. But what about Jackson Five lady who wardrobe malfunctioned for a few seconds to become the search engine hit of the last year? So there is no logic to jiggles and nipples. That is what I am thinking.
Rest of article I am trying to, ah, get a grip on.

plenty godot. In India in recent memory we have had Vyjayantimala (from a devadasi background), and if I am not mistaken the mangeskars were also from a similar back ground (could be wrong here but not wrong of Vyjayantimala) . In the south you had Rekha`s mum et al.
really the transition is there. But the question is degree of notoreity here. Linda Lovelace was a pretty smooth operator and there was not much of serious mud clinging on to her. Most others have not fared this well.

You are wonderful, a woman (?)talking so candidly about sex and its body weapons. Men are attached to penis and women to breasts. Both these `protrusions`get errected and produce `milk`, the life giving liquid, the former doing so in a rather more condensed form. So let them talk in a speachless language as they are the pinnacles of life as depicted wonderfully in Ajunta. The tragedy is the modern women now use their breasts for `show-sha` only and rarely for the pupose nature ordained for them.

You are shooting arrows in too many directions (I felt dizzy trying to follow all those arrows.) However, from all this shooting, two distinct and separate arrows emerge: why women are perceived differently than men, and morality (use sex to support a child.)
My view for the first one is that because, from time immemorial, women have been seen as an object of beauty and desire by men while the other way round is not true; hence, women taking advantage of that.
Morality is a difficult one to tackle. Every culture and society has set its own values. What works in one culture/society does not work in another. Linda Lovelace is now married, has children, and evidently lives a normal life on Long Island. In how many cultures/societies would that have been possible?
