ferozk #35 (to continue form #34) I should also note that cultural diversity is not just tolerated but actually celebrated in the US (they even have ``Diversity Celebration days`` in many towns where immigrants from different parts of the world get to show their foods and clothing and other cultural aspects). But underlying this diversity is a commonality in certain important values that are promoted in schools - self-esteem, respect for others, creativity, and so on.
That is the true strength of this great ``nation of nations`` - and a vast contrast to the intolerance for cultural diversity and lack of emphasis on key values that we find in the regressive societies like Pakistan where a woman dare not wear jeans in public for fear of ridicule, but where generals overthrow elected governments and pirs feed off the ignorance and fears of the poor.

ferozk #27 agreed (and good to see you on chowk after a long time). also note, that there is no such thing as an ``east coast`` or ``west coast`` culture either - indeed, given that these two areas have had traditionally been the areas of immigration, there is a vast diversity of cultures and sub-cultures. There is even a vibrant Pakistani-American culture - increasingly establishing its own distinct identity - that is emerging these and other parts of the US.

What happens openly in the US, happens behind purdah in South Asia. Here people live with choice. There, they live in subjugation and pressure. India is changing rapidly; Pak will follow eventually.
For ex- gays and homosexuality in NWFP is far more notorious, and boy toys forced into work. adultery is rampant behind closed doors.
I do not agree with both the extremes (US or South Asia). There must be some balance and boundaries.

Social contract my arse.
The fact is, Western society is based around the concept of individualism, and Islamic ones are not. This, however, is not the root of differences between the two...
Islamic society has been anything but static since the 7th century...and quite frankly, those sex-obsessed buffoons who think Islamic mores only increase ``frustration``...dude, I`m sorry to say but even in the much lauded ``middle America``, the youth are most definitely frustrated.
It is said that the most popular TV shows in middle America, despite the `conservative` values, are the more racy ones (Sex in the City, Desperate housewives). Sex sells the most there. Indeed, that most red-neck of red-neck shows (WWF) had moved to a sex-filled format to win the ratings game against the ``cleaner`` rivals...and it`s stuck.
The only state that really acts according to their faith is probably Utah...lol
The preponderance of sexuality in the media, and that permeates through society as a whole, does not indicate that the people have somehow come to terms or are less frustrated with their sexuality. If anything, they`ve become addicted.
Enough on that, there`s much much more to America than it`s ideas of sex, which quite frankly the Islamic world can do without (much like the extremist notions of Individualism).
Pick`n choose folks...that`s always an option. To hell with what the purists say.

What else one can expect fro AbdoolAmreeka: (The yelping mutt from the cantonement kennel)
One wmust always talk about the good news. Elections are good. The Americans being body-begged even better.
Oh how the US thugs are busy digging their own graves!
(Cheers! Ovation! Clappings--resound)
MashAllah:
The US thuggs are being killed in huge numbers to bring ``democracy`` . Now that is good news. The other good news is that aal is happening by the attrition of ``democracy`` in the U.S. The second term of the Terminator of ``democracy``.
Isn`t it wonderful to see that whatever the outcome, the Americans are doomed. The reality on the ground is that the people are exhibiting their fundamentalist mindset . Not a single westernised garb in sight!
There is the inked-finger and there is the expression on the faces, in burquas and hijaaab!
The finger-licking-good:
It is telling the U.S thugs: ``up-yours``!
It is telling the muslims the world over : La Ilaha Il-lil-Lah by the Shahdat-kee-Ungli ( the witness finger , as it is called among muslims)
Freedom-fight & elections are going hand-in-hand side by side. There is a purpose, a resolve, a method. A chain of Pro-Iran people from Iran to Syria & Lebanon! From Persian Gulf to the Mediterrenian--now that is a good idea . Same tactics were used when Helaaghu came calling to Baghdad. Even at that time It was the Ayatullahs who rescued muslims from the corrupt Motassam ( the kafir, who declared himself , literally, a god--pharoah like: READ IT) and Helagu.
It is a battle for civilisation. To civilise the US thugs. The world`s oldest civilisation versus the newest ``civilisation``. The old money vs upstarts. The punks with money can never ever be a match for the sagacity & wisdom of the old.
The real war has just begun.
``Bring them on them bodybags``--the Chief THUGG has asked.
They will be delivered!

re: amit # 19
Excellent points!
Most people fail to realize that America is a conservative society and to most of Middle America, the east and west coast life styles are totally alien concepts.
It is no wonder that the east and west coast seem so baffled by the way Middle America thinks and how it reacts to issues and situations. What makes America a great nation is the willingness to tolerate and not to judge acts, which might seem as immoral to others. There is a frontier spirit in America, which most Americans have, which suggests a desire to be left alone and not to be judged and for that, most Americans are willing to follow a live and let live philosophy.
Ciao

I have absolutely no doubt in my mind that Pakistani Fauj helped Americans run, what they call, elections in Iraq. The only elections that can have 72% turnout can only be run by Pak Fauj.

``..................The Western social contract is far more tolerant and fair than the Islamic social contract rooted in 7th century notions of intolerance. It is time people like me were heard to speak this truth that being Muslims we much prefer the freedom of the West to the culturally barren landscape of the Islamic world. We prefer Sexual license to so-called `honor killings`, Free Speech, Apostasy and blasphemy to blasphemy and apostasy laws, drunkenness to Prohibition, and abortion rights to unwanted children. ................``
Well said!! In fact the Western Civilization has again started seriously looking at the ``Social Contract`` Theory which re-affirms the individual without neglecting the society. The rich traditions of western democracy has infact has excited a number of neo-social contractarian thinkers that none of them would reject the idea of an Islamic Social Contract - provided those who seek to get into the contract accept the fact that others can also have a contract.
After all what was TNT all about.....it rose to prominence in the imagination of the muslims of indian continent because it gave them a possibility of re-newing their covenent with the almighty in a separate piece of land...............but that is the moot point in western social contractarian democracies which have implicitely eschewed commitment to theological aims as an improper basis of social living...........Yes, there is a God, but he is like the British Queen who is best in her palace and not in the parliament................So Western Social Contract only believes in arriving at a over-riding consensus between the subjects through a representative parliament or senate and does not believe in the Society as a contract between the people who need to further renew their covenent with some metaphysical being called God..............
Let those who want to include God and his ``essential order`` (as described in his books) in the matters of temporal living may be asked to seek a contract amongst themselves and then segregate themselves from us in another divine and pure land of their imaginations....................Atleast I would ensure that they do not come near me by miles............
