correction : ``# Finally , it is a fallacy to expect governments to :A. Generate Wealth
B. Generate Employment.
Thats not what governments should do. Governments should get out of the business of business and have no role other than one of providing basic civil services like policing , traffic control and defence. Let the private sector - whether deshi or videshi, take care of the rest....
By the way , I just read the article again , I dont know if the writer realises this or not , but this is such a stupid statement...I quote her : ``Creation of wealth means nothing to most of the 6.5 billion human beings alive today unless other economic factors are also looked after. For example, creation of employment opportunities allows the common man to partake of the wealth created by state and international economic forces. But people can only enjoy this wealth if their taxation systems are regularized and income-friendly. ``
Hello !! (keeping the Indian perspective in mind) , 90% of the tax money goes into paying the salaries of the 5 million odd government servants . $30 billion of the tax money is used to keep the workers of sick PSUs employed. All for zero returns. Zilch end product. So basically , in India`s case ,
`creation of employment opportunities` = `very very high taxation`.
Low taxation is possible only if the sick PSUs are closed and employment is linked to productivity , keeping the end product in mind.
B. Generate Employment.

Few points.
# Does the writer even understand the meaning of the term `creation of wealth` ? How is `wealth created` ? Obviously not.
# Else the writer wouldn`t treat `employment generation` as distinct from `creating of wealth`. If there is `creation of wealth` , there will be `generation of employment`.
#There are no free lunches in life. When systems (socialist/communist) attempt to provide `free lunches` , decay is only natural.
# Employment must be linked to productivity. Else we end up with a system like Nehru`s India where public sector merely exists to employ people , profits be damned , inefficiency and lethargy is the rule , accountabililty is a joke. Every year , 150,000 crore rupees ($30 billion) is taken from the national exchequer and pumped into loss making Public Sector Units.
#This is how it works - No doubt the writer employs a maid servant to do the domestic work - cleaning of dishes etc. This is possible if the writer has a high paying job which allows her to use a tiny part of her income to delegate the house work to a maid. Suppose the writer loses her job and subsequently her house - but the maid servant still expects her monthly 500 rupees , although she has no work to do anymore.
Stupid analogy ? Maybe. But at the same time , it describes the socialist system very well , where generation of employment takes precedence over productivity.

hassan if poor counteries could have done what you say they should then we would not have had WB. There is a WB because poor countries can`t do what you think they should. I`m not for WB but reality is cold business.

I might sound really harsh but the reality is that poor countries will have to get out of their problems themselves instead of relying on World Bank or other countries. Furthermore, the longer they wait, the deeper will be the hole they`re sinking into. Most poor African countries are ruled by dictators and tribal lords who don`t give a flying fart about their people. That needs to change. People in those poor countries should be given a chance to make something of themselves BY THEIR OWN LEADERS.

....... donate blood or march in a may day parade .........
......... and no, i am not willing to give my hard earned dollar to bono or oprah so that they can open up a arts and crafts center for bushmen in the kalahari !......... if the bushmen want an arts and crafts center, they will have to do it the old fashioned way - earn it !
......... this silly pathetic tirade against globalization and histrionic display of altruism is characteristic of the new breed of well-fed whiners who are the successors of the fat socialists of yesteryear ..........go join the peace corps or, if that is too much, go down to the local blood bank and donate some blood - it will make you feel better !

......... all very good, but please answer the following rather sophomoric questions ...
``It is a fallacy to suppose that the creation of wealth must be the sole objective of modern governments participating in the global village. Creation of wealth means nothing to most of the 6.5 billion human beings alive today unless other economic factors are also looked after. For example, creation of employment opportunities allows the common man to partake of the wealth created by state and international economic forces. But people can only enjoy this wealth if their taxation systems are regularized and income-friendly. This has a direct impact on the quality of life of the average person, as do things like health care and infrastructure such as transport, electricity, water and telecommunications, etc. And a better quality of life is a step towards building a more stable nation. Which leads to a better world. For you and for me. ``
1) if it is not creating wealth, then what is the purpose of modern governments ?
2) if creating wealth does not create employment opportunities, then what does?
3) how do you create wealth without creating emplyment opportunities? oil? junk bonds? and if junk bonds, what do these junk bonds finance ? oil?..... you get the drfift ?
4) what the heck is an ``income-friendly`` taxation system? isn`t that what bush is proposing - a tax cut, no inheritance tax, tuition exemptions, etc?..... so you are proposing no taxes, eh?.... or is it duh?
5) how do you propose free health care, free gas, free phone and free mineral water without taxes ?....... is cuba the model you are proposing?
........... and we thought we had done away with this socialist crap ! ....... bono and oprah are going to save the world ?............ what about pee wee herman !
