I don`t agree with Cemendtaur`s views. How can a fan following be comparable to a cult? He makes it sound like as if junoon fans would jump off a cliff if they asked them to.
I think Mr. Writer has not been to many concerts in the past. The energy and momentum are typical of any such event.

well i`m smiling Mr. Writer because your comments somewhat remind me of what my dad says about junoon...he doesnt like them either and though i havent heard the band since two years, i was a huge fan of their music...esp ``sayonee`` is divine!
but you are entitled to have an opinion and so i respect your article although i dont think Osama bin Laden and Junoon are comparable at all ...and oh you do paint a pretty nice picture of the concert...brought back memories of old :)

This is a very silly article. Cemendtaur makes Ali Azmat and Junoon sound like the greatest threat to Islamic civilization since Genghis Khan and the Mongols.

bell,
.... eddie vedder collaborated with nusrat on the soundtrack for dead man walking - which was awesome - but i don`t know of anything else he did with pearl jam ......... i heard they have done a concer or two with rahat, nusrat`s nephew ........ ??
......... unfortunately, as you get more ``mature`` like me you sort of taper off music and end up stuck in the era of your college days ......... most people stop paying any attention to the music scene after they hit thirty - it is the younger generation that keeps music alive ........ if it weren`t for my kids i would still be happy listening to pink floyd, ccr and kishore kumar !

Hamidm,
Nirvana is much more than `Smells like teen spirit`. They were a cursed band, they wanted no part of the mainstream but got it in dollops, hence the quick demise. The concept of Nirvana is what appeals to most of us, and the raw energy of the music.
On a side note, have you ever heard the songs that Nusrat Fateh Ali Khan and Pearl Jam sang together ?
to everyone else,
About western and sub-continental music, I see no reason to stick to either one. Why can`t someone enjoy both at the same time, or just one. Why should we be forced to listen to something. After all, that is not what music is about. I remember my undergrad years (late 90s early 2000s), we used to listen to metal one day and jJagjit Singh the next, music is but a reflection of moods.
Sometimes I like the raw aggression of Nirvana, while at other times the musical perfection of Led Zepplin or the amazing grace and poetry of Jagjit Singh etc.
Junoon started out well, but has degerated to bubble gum pop these days. There are many better bands in the sub-continent. I would recommend Indian Ocean for one.
regards,

Why an Western born and raised kid should or would not enjoy western music from bob dylan to whatever? why would they listen to say Abida Parveen auntie? I agree there. When an America or Canada born nephew/niece/cousin starts showing interest in Kirtan and Alam Lohar that scares the hell out of me. Similarily when someone talks about JLO in amritsar that scares me too. This kid in Amritsar talked about ``Friends`` and every episode of it in so much detail that I had to advise his parents to once in a while take him to some local mela to show him realty around him. Both of these people are detached from their realities.
Why would anyone above 35 listen Junoon and swirl his head? anyone desi and over 40 screaming in junoon concert is like calling a shrink in middle age panic attack.
everything has a time, place and generation for it.
but Junoon sucks big time.
BUT if as Ali say, if they can stand between Mullah and Makhlooq and save the makhlooq...I will start bying their CDs.

There are all kinds of stories (yes stories, NOt rumours, NOt conspiracy theories) that he, alongwith so many of his friends and friends of the Bush clan, are comfortably ensconced in the white house.
They are all relishing and enjoying their capers. and planning a few more post-white house.
Watch the Dirty Rotten Scoundrels-- Osama is played by Michael Caine.

The nubile ones are not allowing you to grow-up. You try painfully hard to always make way into the Gallup polls and Nielson ratings--early signs of rot.
When Nadir Shah pointed out to Muhammad Shah Rangeela that a lot of his constituencies are rebelling & declaring autonomy, he (MSR) speding too much time on the Peacock Throne.
MRS replied: `` Oh that is super! the more autonomous they become, the more our workload be lessened``
He believed in never having to say no to those who were supposed to be his wards.
You have an inherent ability to join the enemy at the `right` time.
Sleeper-cell song:
No mullah am I, all my relatives are, prostitutes & pimps
Bombs I`ve none & I`ve been seen in company of wimps
I roll myself up day & night in the star-spangled banner
You didn`t notice me saluting TwinTowers in your manner?

echo,
``Music lovers in the `west` as well, including the youngones, have their needles stuck in the seventies. ``
............ no, not really ............ as the bowling for soup song goes, some are stuck in 1985 !!!
...... you obviously don`t know any eighteen and twelve year olds ! ........... how come i am spending a fortune on i-tune gift cards and always shelling out money for concerts by all sorts of bands that i (and you) have never heard of ?........ cold play, the strokes, white stripes, maroon 5, the killers, whatever, etc ........ and what is this indie hair style all about ?
.............of course if you ask me nobody beats the stones and nirvana ......... ``i can`t get no satisfaction`` (1965) and ``smells like teen spirit `` (1991) were the best songs ever - but that was a long long time ago !
.......... but what kind of music are the the sleeper cell jihadis lstening to nowdays ? ....... black sabbath ?

tahmed,
..... you are evil ! ..........
.......... but as somewhat of a music buff myself, i get really ticked off when people try to label music ``bad`` just because it is ``western``........ growing up i heard the same sort of crap being said about ahmed rushdi, runa laila, alamgir, the vital signs, sajjad ali, nazia and zoeb hassan, hassan jehangir and anyone else who did not fit the mullah`s hate-filled mold ............ the progeny of zia lives on !

I would rather watch hijras clap and twirl (nails hammered underneath my nails is the only torture that will even make me do this) than hear or see Junoon sing.
So what if more people like Junoon? There are more beetles in one dung pile than there are peacocks in the entire jungle. Does that mean the dung is better?

hamidm: When the brits were still doing the British Raj thing in India, my father struck a blow for independence by switching the radio at the army officers club from english music to good old indian music. A british brigadier (overranking my father, a mere captain at the time) turned red at this insult to the British Raj, walked over and switched the music back to english. My father waited until the old boy had gone, then switched it back to indian music. The other british officers held their peace, and one of them told my father they admired his guts. The whole thing was very symbolic back then.
