Jews circumcised themselves to keep them separate from others. They didn`t want any pollution.
Christians tell everyone that they destiny is hell if they don`t accept Jesus christ as the savior and the lord....etc.
Islam - the less said the better.
Non semitic religions.
Hinduism, Budhisim, Jainism are known for acceptance.....Any visit to a Gurudwara is enough to how freely people of all faith mingle without feeling strange.
Hinduism has some strict rules - but it is not an exclusive religion like the Semitic religions.

Nandita, the simplest thing to do is to drop the surname. Put an advert in the local papers and change your surname.
I do hope that going to Sanawar has given you the ability to think for yourself. I say this because my 11 year old son is studying there, and the least that education should do is give him the ability to make responsible choices for himself as well as others under his care once he finishes.
In todays day and age you can become whatever you want. Follow any of the religions or start your own religion. Race, caste, religion are ways of dividing mankind. Countries are nothing but clubs where you get membership by birth.
50,000 years ago, our ancestors used to live in an area in Africa. Everyone was brown skinned till migration started. Incidently National geographic is running a project which takes your DNA samples and traces the exact route that your ancestors took.

Kaura,
Do you like embarrassing yourself?
``Syncretism in Islam
The Druzes integrated elements of Ismaili Islam with Gnosticism and Platonism. Their practice of disguising themselves as followers of the dominant religion makes difficult to ascertain what is believed and what simulated. Several of the Jewish Messiah claimants like Jacob Frank and the donmeh ended mixing Cabalistic Judaism with Christianism and Islam. Sikhism blends Hinduism and Islam and was notably supported by the Mughal emperor Akbar, who wanted to consolidate the diverse religious communities in his empire. The Bahá`ís follow a prophet whom they consider a successor to Muhammad, and recognise Jesus, Moses, Buddha and Zoroaster amongst others as former prophets. Some have therefore considered it a syncretic faith.``

Saminasha,
Your source is so polarised and biased. Religous persecution reach it`s height under Shah Jahan and Aurengzeb to new limits. Aurengzeb was convinced by his Qazis that his mission in life is to convert all Indians into Islam. He did not eat his food till he had 60 KGs(approx 140 lbs) of Janeu(Hindu Sacred thread), in other words about 20,000-30,000 forced conversions in a day.
Is that your view point and you thinkt hat it is okay?
If Bush starts converting all of Muslims into Christianity by reasoning, financial incentives or co-orcion would you become a Christian?
You are only quoting one Mughal king(Akbar) who was realtively peaceful but what about 99% of the rest.

samina,
can you ever pen something on your own??????
i don`t give a damn about wikipedia........where any fool can inoput.
anyways u are dead wrong on sikhism.
sikhism was a reform movemnet that challenged the prevalent ethos of both Islam and Hinduism.....it rejected both dogmas.
Akbar respected all saints (superstiious???) ..... like Ranjit Singh, he was an illiterate person.
he jst showed respect towards the gurus of the time.....nothing more - WHAT support???
pls use your own brain - instead of copying from wikipedia.
