fuzair: interesting article. points to some ugly realities that the US bashers on chowk have been carefully ignoring.
One such ugly reality pointed out in the article: ``Newman calculates that between a quarter million and 400,000 Asians, overwhelmingly noncombatants, were dying each month the war continued. Newman et al. challenge whether an assessment of Truman`s decision can highlight only the deaths of noncombatant civilians in the aggressor nation while ignoring much larger death tolls among noncombatant civilians in the victim nations.``
As I write to khansahib below, these facts mean nothing to those who claim to weep for the hiroshima civilians when in fact all they seek is a stick to beat the US with.

There is a very interesting article (making use of the entire MAGIC/ULTRA intercepts, rather than just excerpts from them) that says definitively why the US bombed Hiroshima and Nagasaki. Suffice it to say, it wasn`t to test out a new toy, bully Stalin, eliminate the Japs, or some other such revisionist reason. Oh, and the Japanese weren`t getting ready to surrender, either. But hurry, not sure how long the article will be available.

Romair #25 What!! another set of examination questions! OK, i will try to answer (hopefully they are simple yes/no type of questions).
1. Yes. And even mushy agrees with me here: the right to exercise option of first use of nukes in case of war an explicit defense policy of Pakistan. You may not like this answer, but the fact is that war is ugly business where the rules are simple: kill or be killed. The sooner we pakistanis understand this, the better.
2. Christ said that before you judge a man, walk a mile in his shoes. I am not going to second guess why they did not simply demonstrate the bomb on an empty lot. Maybe they thought it would be difficult to convince Hirohito to witness it for himself and so be convinced of the bomb`s destructive power.
3. No. Vietnam was a tragic mistake on the part of the US. But World War II was not. In Vietnam, the only strategy that made sense was for the US to walk away. In World War II, the Japanese did not provide the US this option - it was kill or be killed.
4. Sorry, I dont like to speculate on hypotheticals because there is no basis in fact for forming an opinion.

khansahib: I think you are not reading what I am writing.
About muslim rulers in India: What I have always said, and still say, is that those who raided India (like Mahmud Ghaznvi) in fact violated the muslim faith and are therefore false heroes for muslims. The destruction of the Somnath, e.g., was a violation of the Quranic injunction against respect for all religions. We must break from that past and see it for what it was. You may see this as disrespect for muslim rulers - I see this as respect for the Quran, and based on which I consider all those muslim kings who attacked innocent people in India to be violaters of the muslim faith.
About Nagasaki/Hiroshima bombings: I state the opposite case because I am fed up of the crocodile tears that Pakistani ``intellectuals`` shed here. They merely seek a stick to beat the US with. I am second to none in feeling sorrow for innocent people of any nationality who lose their lives in violence. But I refuse to join these Pakistani hypocrites who all bleat like a herd of sheep the same stupid one-sided nonsense. And please do yourself and myself a favor by sticking to what I wrote - instead of making up your own claims about my laughing at the japanese civilians who died in Nagasaki/Hiroshima.

the only solution is to seriously TRY the Once Bussiness Partners, and Now Partners in a WAR OF TERRORISM , under a Full fledged World Wide court of International Justice for WAR CRIMES,
Messers Osama Bin Laden and Messers Bush.
So the world should know the reality, as it is, Not as Messers Osama Bin Laden and Messers Bush are trying to push through, and seems to be accepted blindly by every One.

[The “problem” with the muslims is they refuse to accept defeat, they precipitated the downfall of one super power in Afghanistan and now are humbling the other in Iraq.]
If enduring the humiliation of being strip-searched everytime you land at a western airport constitutes victory, well yes, Muslims are winning.

aslam I beg to differ because it is not that muslims refusing to accept defeat it is that they have accepted it but are afraid of the a defeated future that is making them act so defensive and destructive

Doomsday predictions have been stated in every major religions...............but what aghasts me is that so many of well educated persons accept this as a piece of sacrd dogma and do not voice against it .............if you do not treat the cult of OBL as psychopathic then we are looking at wrong end of the problem and trying to tinker with things which have little to do with the current rush of terrorism...............

The Bully Boy suddenly had a new toy, and he wanted to play with it....
History tells us, there were already, back door negotiations going on, through covert diplomatic channels, and there was some disagreement on the terms of surrender.
``Japanese were already essentially defeated, and therefore use of the bombs was unnecessary. General Dwight D. Eisenhower so advised the Secretary of War, Henry L. Stimson, in July of 1945. The highest-ranking officer in the Pacific Theater, General Douglas MacArthur, was not consulted beforehand, but said afterward that there was no military justification for the bombings. The same opinion was expressed by Fleet Admiral William Leahy (the Chief of Staff to the President), General Carl Spaatz (commander of the U.S. Strategic Air Forces in the Pacific), and Brigadier General Carter Clarke (the military intelligence officer who prepared intercepted Japanese cables for U.S. officials) ; Major General Curtis LeMay ; and Admiral Ernest King, U.S. Chief of Naval Operations, and Fleet Admiral Chester W. Nimitz, Commander in Chief of the Pacific Fleet .
the only advantage it had was to beat USSR in the victory game, and that too by a few hours.
.....That BOMB has defined the future psychology of the SOLE super power, it confirmed their superiority in terms of cruelity and destructive abilities
...the second BOMB was completely UNNECCERAY,....and it only boasted their arrogance, and the devil may CARE attitude.
Current events also show this same very attitude, Americans are guilty of WAR CRIMES, they are committing WAR CRIMES against humanity and calling those, over 100,000 civilian lives as `` Collaterial Damage `` .
The world should wake up, and take a moral stance, and try Mr Bush, and his Cotiere, Mr Blair and his Cabinet, along with Mr Osama Bin Laden in absentia, on the charges of Hineous WAR CRIMES...
Other wise the current events show, the World is fast sliding towards a Bloody conflict, and the lines are being drawn much faster then anticipated.
Its a cold , calculated, ruthless game with the only OUTCOME death and destruction not only of Humanity but civilizations, and should be stopped.

Let us not get confused by the discourse of the OBL-s and Romorons of this world- what we are seeing is not the situation of conflict over material and human resources but a mad doomsday cult which believes that the FINAL war is about to begin...............these are psychopaths who would like to conribute to the doomsday in order to justify their belief in the almighty....these are sick unbelievers because they lack faith and require ressurances all the time ......these sick persons desperately seek to show others that they are of superior faith........but the fact is that the more they indulge in crimes in the name of almighty the more closer they come to the doors of hell........................atleast the American honestly tell that they act out of greed............these psychopaths indulge in mayhem for NOTHING as someone said...............and we have to treat them for psychotic disorder than anything else............................today it is nuclear bombs .tomorrow it will be poisonous gases (remember the tokyo cult ).......next time it is going to be anthrax......thereafter if would be poison in the water supply............I do not think even if we eliminate all the nuke or formulas to make poisonous gases in the world this psychoathic cult of OBL is not going to stop trying to kill rest of the humans unless they surrender before them and accept their slavery to their cult after the FINAL mayhem....................

tahmed32...I thought you were a sensible person...you were ready to call the previous muslim rulers of India as probaby rapists and thieves, and now here you are justifying the slaughter of hundreds of thousands of civilinas in one fell swoop in Hiroshima and Nagasaki as a cause of celebration...remember all imperialists are the same, they all have the same vices and motivations, and all barbarities are the same too, whether performed by those that you love or those that you hate.

Prof. Hoodbhoy.
While I admire your liberal views, I find it repulsive that you have tried to draw a parallel between radical Islam and American policies. The two are poles apart and have nothing in common.
American policies are by and large governed by a morall compass. They may not execute it perfectly, but America has always been the champion of freedom. But for America, we might be living under Nazi rule, Communist Rule or brutal Japanese rule. The Afghans would still be under the Taliban. The bosnians would still be getting butchered. Thank God for America that we live in a free world where there is a chance to live a good life.
Radical Islam, on the other hand, is satanic evil in its full glory. It is the most vile, filthy, disgusting ideology. It treats human beings as animals who should blow themselves up in jihadi missions. It enslaves women and minorities. It encourages brutal beheadings and random killings of innocent people. It is a curse of satan on mankind. All people must join hands to eliminate this scourge from our lives.
