Sherman lived during the American Civil war. Do u think he was referring to the Asian Indian when he talked about the indians? I don`t think so.
Older generation of white americans still refer to Native Americans as ``Indians``.

first of all ranjit is not a keeRa only for what he wants in his ``enemy`` country, but what he has said about indians in his own country. last i checked, and last some other indians understood, the muslims in india are very much indians. now i have lived in your ``enemy`` country, and i have heard certain remarks and heard about actions taken to get rid of some of your enemies by ``their own``. and i don`t think all that highly of those people either. so please don`t feel that i am singling your precious ranjit out.
i also know some indians from what is supposedly my ``enemy`` country who will constantly question and point out the fallacies of the state government of the ``enemy`` country but who do not have a problem with expressing their concern, and their compassion and the desire to help out in any way they can. now i wish i could explain what makes these indians function differently from you and ranjit, but i am afraid that you will not understand. and quite frankly, i have given up on trying to make people understand something they have absolutely no wish to understand.
and finally my views are my views. i cannot claim to represent the voices of pakistan, as my ``enemy`` ranjit claims to represent the majority of indians. aur meri nazar maiN, if the pakistani and the indian government considers each other to be ``the enemy`` then it doesn`t follow that i have to consider indian people as the enemy as well, and the indians i`ve met do not perceive me as their ``enemy``. i know this concept is difficult for some pakistanis and indians both to understand, and i understand why they would find it as such. also, since i am speaking only for myself, i have spoken against government policies against your ``enemy`` country often enough to where i have been considered ``the enemy``, so kindly do not preach to me about learning to live with a little ill will. if i choose to speak up against something, whether it is uttered by your enemy or mine. i will. if we can allow a variety of voices from india to speak up, then certainly we can allow a variety of pakistani voices to speak up as well. so try learning to live with a little goodwill, dharma ji. if not, that is your choice.

Why is ranjit a keera for merely wishing bad things to happen to an enemy country which went to war without provocation 4 times in 50 years? Maybe indians are brainwashed into thinking that pakistan started the wars. Maybe it is time to correct that? Maybe indians are brainwashed into thinking that jihadis are allowed to cross into India by pakistan army so that they can come in and kill innocent civilians along with the army men. It is time to correct that misconception. You can not slap a person and except him to have good feelings for you. Then everyone would be a mahatma. If you are as vocal in criticising your government for hurting india, then maybe indians would think that pakistani civilians are innocent bystanders. But none of the pakistanis wanted to even consider that it was regular army that was fighting kargil war when kargil was going on and even after it was over there was no overwhelming criticism of that dastardly act. Noone criticises loudly enough when Dukhtaran-e-Millat activists throw acids at young girls for not covering or when they burn shops for selling alcohol. For you all Ranjit is evil incarnate for not thinking well of pakistanis who maybe killing an indian everyday somewhere or other in the country. If it is not true it is time to prove that pakistan is not that kind of country and get rid of this misconception in peoples minds. You can not, not protest when Indians are hurt by pakistani actions and still want indian good will towards you. You can not have the cake and eat it too. Decide which one you want. And Ranjit did not do anything illegal or immoral. Just like west wants to see moderate muslims to be vocal , we want ordinary pakistanis to be vocal about anti india policies of the govt. If you cant do that learn to live with some ill will. It is not that big deal compared to the ill actions that are killing people.

.... i am not saying anything, but here is what sherman said in his letter to grant : ``we must act with vindictive earnestness against the indians, even to their extermination, men, women and children.`` ....... writing two days later to his brother john, general sherman said: ``i suppose the indian must be exterminated ........ sherman also cleansed his army of the ``wicked jews``................
....... and there are still some who attribute the famous saying to sherman, not sheridan ............. in any case, there are a few shrines to sheridan as well in pakistan, particularly in sindh and baluchistan ............. the urs of sheridan sharif in nawabshah draws devotees in the thousands every year .... on the second day they have a symbolic indian hanging ........an actor with shaven head and dressed in saffron robe is marched to the gallows and then dropped into a heap of cowdung as the noose is slipped off at the last minute ...........the crowd is greatly amused ........... go figure - pakistanis are strange people .........

hamidm is geographically challenged. He thinks Indian Indians are native Americans and that he is the white man.

it`s easy to confuse sherman with sheridan isn`t it, hamid ji?
and i had no idea after what they did to kim`s gun and victoria regina`s statue that they would let gora errrr sherman`s statues stand in chaburji of all places. *shocked*
kyooN ``bechaaroN`` ko aur bewaqoof bana rahe ho?

as for ranjit. . . . i didn`t know a chhoTa keeRa like you had the ears and the eyes and the heart of the ``overwhelming majority`` of the hindustani desh? chalo, if it gives you a sense of importance to believe in that. . . . you really don`t convince some of us pakistanis here on chowk. unlike your foul mouth, mine cannot speak for the overwhelming majority of pakistanis.

Sridhar, Hamidm:
Type ``indian is a dead indian`` and there are so many references that prove sridhar`s point. However, people are not so sure whether Sherman said this or some one else.
If true, why pakistanis ``worship`` sherman? Pakistanis will have to research that.
****
``The only good Indian is a dead Indian`` is a saying often attributed to General Phil Sheridan. In January of 1869, General Sheridan was in camp at Fort Cobb in Indian Territory (now Oklahoma) shortly after George Custer`s fight with Black-Kettle`s Cheyennes. Turtle Dove, or Toch-a-way, who was a chief of Comanches, trying to impress the General, struck himself in the breast and said ``Me, Toch-a-way; me good Indian``. The General smiled and answered ``The only good Indians I ever saw were dead.``
Phillip Sheridan repeatedly denied ever making such a statement, but several eye witnesses agree that he said it. Sheridan was well known as a bigot and Indian hater, and few that knew him doubted his agreement with the statement. In any case, the statement attributed to Sheridan evolved into the more generalize and powerful proverbial form ``The only good Indian is a dead Indian.`` and became synonymous with the Indian policy of most of the military at that time. This opinion lingered on, and another infamous, Indian fighter made the following incredible remarks at a speech in January of 1886 in New York: ``I suppose I should be ashamed to say that I take the Western view of the Indian. I don`t go so far as to think that the only good Indians are dead Indians, but I believe nine out of every ten are, and I shouldn`t like to inquire too closely into the case of the tenth.`` These words were spoken by Theodore Roosevelt less than 15 years before he became President of the United States.

rsridhar,
..... what you say might be true, and sherman might have been talking about native americans, but then how do you explain sherman`s statue at chauburji in lahore and chandni chowk in rawalpindi ?........... also why is sherman`s birthday a national holiday in pakistan ? ......... you really need to check your facts before jumping to conclusions ..........

Here is a secret. An overwhelming majority of Indians think exactly like me. It is just that they want to act all proper and politically correct, so they are mouthing compassionate words. I can assure you that most people in India are very happy about what happened to Pakistan.
The question is why is this the case? We certainly did not feel this way about Hurricane Katrina`s victims. The reason is the enormous ill-will generated by Pakistan with its relentless confrontation with India. Even today after all this earthquake and devastation, Pakistanis still want Kashmir from India. This nonsense has to stop some day. Indians are not cattle that you can lust after our land, commit atrocities against us, attack our places of worship and then expect us to feel your pain. You give up your anti-India policies and make peace, you will get that reciprocated from us. But if you think you will hurt us and we will take it like our ancestors stupidly did in the times of Ghaznavi/Ghouri, forget about it. This India and the hindus are now totally different people.
