I`ve listened to some of the paki radio shows in Houston...You`d think you were in Peshawar or Karachi instead of the city that just got it`s ass kicked by the sox. Most of the callers are hardcore jihadis and I`ll be surprised if DHS or the FBI isn`t tracking the callers to some of the shows.

Unfortunately the generalizations overshadow the common sense in this piece. Very quickly the too broad statements:

1. middle and upper class famillies with one income earner do not suffer from diseases of substance abuse.
2. the culture of divorce exists without mainstream marriage counseling and intervention programs, practitioners, literature
3. that south asian americans arent interested in caring for their parents as they become elderly
4. the aging south asian american population does not have their own ideas and plans for their retirement years (i.e. desi elderly residential housing complexes)

This one is rich in superficial details (most of them done to death) while clueless on what the immigrant “experience” is like! Also a whole lot of generalizations – some of them absolutely foolish (e.g., statements such as “not objecting” to marrying girls of a particular color – as if parents still have a decisionmaking role in such matters)!

It would also have been worthwhile to compare and contrast with South Asians in Great Britain and other places – in some ways, a projection tool because of a longer associated time frame.

Also, the author should have left it as a descriptive account and held back on yielding to the (occasional) temptation to lecture people on what to do and what not to do.

Parmatma Sharan has written a couple of books on this topic about a couple of decades ago. There might be others, too. It would be of interest to track the changes since.

Most of that information in your article is incorrect. The specific things regarding Pakistanis, especially. Haven`t been lived in big cities like Chi, LA, and now settled in Houston whose desi or pakistani populations are more then midsize to small cities in pakistan and india, I speak from a far better experience...as opposed to someone from say Delaware...
