My Family Reunion
Posted by kaurasach Nov 12, 2004 12:44 pm
I did not witness the 47. But, I remeber the houses muslims left behind and now occupied by some of my relatives who came from Pakistan.
These are the stories that were eyewitnesses told me.

A very good family friend was a kid (8 yrs) in 47. He witnessed a muslim woman`s child killed and her breast cut. Before she left for Pakistan, she prayed at the graveyard and dargah for punishment. One of the two culprits was poisoned by his own children with pesticide. The other died an equally gruesome death. This happened near Phillaur.

My taya was allegdly involved in frenzy. He died a decade back. I was not close to him; so did not have the opportunity to verify it with him. Those who tell his actions, dismiss it as an episode. Muslims were killing too, is the answer I get.

Muslims were killing and kidnapping in E Punjab too. The females of the household were not allowed to go out. And, my grandparents were prepared as early as 46 with weapons. My grandfather was a ``khund`` and an officer. He had guns. He vounteered to go fight a muslim mob that was ravaging villages on the way to Pakistan. On the way, he was thrown off his horse by a friend. Though he was hurt badly, he survived. Because the rest of his companions were killed.

Part 2 .

My maasar`s family was a prosperous and hailed from Gojra. They received a call telling them to leave. His mom tells they were not even allowed to remove the `daal` from the stove. They came penniless to Amritsar. Eventually they were granted land in Kapurthala district belonging to muslims who left for Pakistan.

My in laws family set their own home and business on fire as the mob was approaching. They walked out the back door. Also came to Amritsar.

Part 3

My nana nani were peaceful people. They were in Delhi. They saw army shoot a muslim neighbor. Muslims armed with daggers were threatening and challenging that kafirs would be killed. So, they packed their bags and waited for the moment they had to flee - which never came.

When muslims were attacked and they left. My nana took a buffalo. He released it when govt. announced of consequences for looted property. They also took a couple of buckets of red chillis (muslims had kept them to throw at mob). She said that the chillis lasted them for 3 years.

She also remembered her ``pathan`` neighbors who were extremely beautiful and lived in her native village in Ambala district.

Nikki,

If you wish, since you know the meaning now, we can locate the sardar for you. Piarra Love is itching to shoot an arrow.;)

There is an old Chinese saying, ``It is the beautiful bird that gets caged``.

I am tempted to come as a crow in next life.

The reason Punjabis aren`t famous fish cooks is there is not enough fish in Punjab. That is surprising with all the rivers, lakes, ponds etc. The only fish seems to come from Bhakhra. And it used to be forbidingly expensive.

I think the pollution (extensive fertilizers and pesticide use) killed it.

I remeber a PWD official dug a pond near Rajpura with haram da paisa; and filled it with the fish....hoping to cash in on the lucrative business. The monsoon washed away his fish and the pond. HA HA.

Best fish is outside of thekas. All misconceptions I had were gone when a very troubled (needed to drown his sorrow) relative took me to a theka. At the roadside machhi stand, in Ludhiana, cold night, trucks whizzing by, bottle of Peter Scott and fried fish from Bhakhra.

I thought Salmon only lived and spawned in areas like Alaska Canada and Northern Europe.

Is it farm raised (the one in India)?

Most of the Salmon in US is farm raised. It is gray in color and is dyed with red color to make it appealing. I think this farm raised ``leather`` is not worth eating. It is bhed chaal.

I tried it a few times (Indians here have dived into this bhed chaal and coerced me into trying it). Not my cup of tea.
Yasser Arafat: Twilight of a Warrior

I was listening to the radio this morning and last night. The radio hosts and callers were treating him as a terrorist not worth any sympathy. They equated him to OBL, and his role in Munich killings and suicide bombings. Some went as far as saying that he is going to hell, or he deserved to die a painful death or killing. Others (Christians) said let God be judge. He squandered and stashed millions - the money intended for common Palestinins.

Just wanted to post an opposing view (sentiments of most Americans) to the view presented here.

War is always nasty.

Neither side is full angels or demons.

Had there been better plan and intentions, things would`ve been better for Iraqis and American soldiers.

Regarding this article, it is biased as expected.

I got constipated just by reading her description of the food. I`ve had my good share of this pasta, meringue things/salmon/ blah etc. blah. One should try all this, but the way everyone is throwing lalaan on the page is just annoying.........

Nothing is as fullfilling as roti, chicken, sabji (sabZi for Pakis), daal....washed down with lassi or whisky. Rest is just `phokay pathay`.

#11,

It could be that from mitti (Earth, soil) we come, and are reduced to mitti after death.

Seems more plausible.

Shehlah,

This would`ve been more humorous (maybe).....had you not tried to over comical.

Hmmmm. The article`s contents are clear as mud. Conceled intentions/views are transparent.

Palestinian `movement` is visible because of European interests and liberal and leftist ideologies of USA. Otherwise, people have been fed up. That is why Israel has gone on offensive wtih visible gains in their strategy.

I read some sentiments of Palestinians. Arafat doesn`t come out to be a `hero` that others would like the world to believe. He did not succeed as a leader to them. He made mistakes.
Mistakes have consequences.

One man`s hero is another`s villain. That is how history is.

There are moving narrations of the barbarity in Littlemag magazine in past two issues. Go to their website. It covers 1993 bombay, Godhra and 84 (the most vicious and organized) riots.
