the most successful religious party in the sub-continent will have to be PPP. they passed anti-ahmedia legislation. next is ML under sharif, when they got the hudood ordanance. BJP is an unsuccessful party since they were not able to bring in a ram-janmabhoomi bill on the floor.

Stuka #61, {``Tell me, would you call the Muslim League or Islamic Jamhoori Ittehad secular parties? If anything, the BJP is a mirror of Pakistani mainstream parties.``}
Stuka,
Although we can`t always go by names, but certainly you are right. ML cannot be a secular party if they cater to just Muslims. One may ask about the Christian Democrats in Germany. IJI sure sounds religious to me.

#55, mannyd {``I propose that all parties that limit memebrship on the basis of religion or caste be banned in India.
This would include Shiv Sena, Muslim Leauge, Shiromini Akali Dal or some Brahmin Dal, if any such thing and my assumtion on limited membership is right.``}
Manny Bhai,
I agree with you wholeheartedly. Too bad, we couldn`t have banned ML before the damage was done. :)
The alphabet soup is not my creation - we just have too many organizations trying to divide people against each other.

stuka#51:
Not really! In theory, the BJP is a strictly secular party which wants to do away with the religion-based laws. In that respet, it is more secular than any Pakistani party or even the Congress and the communists in India.
However, it does have an anti-muslim agenda based on real and imaginary historical grievances of Hindus against the Muslim period of Indian history. Its anti-muslim agenda and secularism may seem incongruos but are, in fact, not strictly incompatible, except that the BJP would perhaps be inclined to ban religious conversions.

``I submit that they are more akin to MMA. After all, the raison d`etre for BJP is to advance the Hindutva doctrine``
Yes, but the Hindutva doctrine is fundamentally misunderstood. The BJP is more like the IJI. Tell me, would you call the Muslim League or Islamic Jamhoori Ittehad secular parties? If anything, the BJP is a mirror of Pakistani mainstream parties.

#59 lumpen elements is also a code-word ;-)
more seriously, ss encourages its cadre to take its political protests to streets and sometime indulge in violence. they hope to get arrested in the process so that they can claim martyrdom. examples are distroying displays of valentines-day cards (not all shops since some are owned by sena members), digging up of cricket pitch before pakistan match, and more recent act in which they met a contigent of biharis on a special train and roughted them up.
when lallu prasad became rail-minister, there was a central railway req to fill a few thousand positions in various workshops in maharashtra. lallu filled up a few trains with folks from bihar on govt dime and brought them to fill these positions. raj thakrey got wind ot this and a melee ensued. nirupam a bhaiyya MP left shivsena after that i think.
so now this year there is a similar western railway drive to fill a few thousand positions, and the authorities are more careful. they are printing exam papers in hindi, marathi, english and gujrathi (poor madrasis are excluded) and holding the exam. its to be seen if Raj Thakrey takes any credit and rakes up the issue, maybe ferzana can listen to the street and find out.
offcourse communist have been master-lumpens for a long time.

Farzana #34: No you did not compare MQM with Shiv Sena anywhere. MY question was to Kham`s post #1, which was picked up by Flatlanders, Aquaris, Pokershark and Delhi Wala. I have heard of Thackrey on Chowk before, when Chowkies like Jay are given that name. Except for that nugget I know very little about Shiv Sena. I could not follow your article or have any feelings about Raj`s gain or loss, mainly because of my own limited knowledge about Bomaby and SS politics. What does `lumpen` and grooming mean? Is it a Bombayiya expression?
Thanks for the reply.

The make up of the Pakistani society is not communal as they are not in close proximity to a religiously adverse group.
Sure...Pakistan has almost 0% jews...That`s why 80% of Pakistanis have a favorable opinion of jews.

Salim Sahib: I do not know about all the alphabet soup parties you mention with slashes. There used to be RSS, Jan Sangh and Hindu Maha Sabha only when I left India. Hindu Maha Sabha died with some Mukerji. RSS was not a political party and could not stand in elections, Jan Sangh as its political front could.
However I can not tell the difference between the ideaology all the other parties. As a starter, I propose that all parties that limit memebrship on the basis of religion or caste be banned in India.
This would include Shiv Sena, Muslim Leauge, Shiromini Akali Dal or some Brahmin Dal, if any such thing and my assumtion on limited membership is right. If the membership is wide open to all adults, then Indians Muslims should join and work from within the parties to change party platform.
Just because Republicans are rich does not stop poor blacks or browns to go to their conventions and ask for changes.

Salim,
ghori, gaznavi.. they are all ferners or newly painted names of no-dong...i admit its confusing to me..proof of my evolution.
sure, i have no problem understanding that GOP/Baptist/right-to-life/rednecks/confederates have intersectional agendas, but i dont recognize them all as evil. maybe some of them dont like ferners...its nationalism..talk to HP he will explain the difference.

#50: OH, you want us to do what you say, not what you do or did. Is that because Hindus are a lower specie or species? Did you make up your mind yet about which word you want to mean what?
#52:Kham: LOL, not half as funny as you were.

Kham #33:`i shall appreciate if the harassment by the said person is stopped by deleting his threatening interacts failing which it shall be construed that his attacks on my person have the blessing of the editor/management.`
Dear Mr; KK: You would be pleased and proud to know that you intimidate me about twice as much as Salim intimidates you. As soon as your name appears on a thread, I get this strong paranoid feeling of being attacked and an urge to flee or hide in a restroom until you go away. Many times I can not post even a single line for hours when I see KK. Please stop your harrassment and threatening interacts. If you ask me to show you any proof, I`ll consider that a proof of harrassment in itself.
