Fascism`s and Mussolini`s connection with religion was quite intimate, forming a mutually supportive, international alliance for domination of others, and of other cultures.

Golwalkar was less than a nobody in that arrangement.

Golwalkar was a product of his times. When the khilafat movement died in the 1920s, Gandhi`s attempts to bring religious muslims to join his movement backfired and Hindu-Muslim unity turned into Hindu-Muslim enmity with Mopla riots in Malabar coast and elsewhere. The resulting communal polarisation created support for both Hindu and Muslim communalism. Some of the Hindu communalists were also impressed by Fascism, especially Mussolini in Italy and Hitler in Germany. Golwalkar was one of them.

Hey, at least nobody is trying to sanitize that other supremo, Prophet Mohammad.

His insanity is being proudly proclaimed as the Way of Life for All Time to Come.

Hey Gatadya, how many jobs have you created this month?

i visited nagpur a couple of years back for the first time. nagpur is a bastion of two political movements, the bal-bhim crowd (Republican-dalit party) and the jai-bajrang crowd (the RSS). (they are however not at odds with each other.)

the RSS crowd feels really anacronistic in todays world. the shakhas are mostly full of 60+ folks. They are at most proud of making sure that no squatters from bangla-desh build huts in their muhallas (though their pride is misplaced, there are plenty of colonies). a few youngsters still join the RSS and their parents worry who will marry them. all doctors and professional who are retired gulf returnees seem to be kattar RSS supporters and are busy with blood-banks etc, but they too are 60+.

they all conceeded that rss is dying due to too much prosperity.

PS: Zafar Ali Khan was the editor of a magazine called ``Zamindar`` which was the mouthpiece of the Unionists in Lahore.

He supported the Lahore resolution because his unionist mentor Sir Sikandar Hayat Khan was the prime mover along with Fazlul Haq of Bengal under the Sikandar-Jinnah pact.

Akbar-e-Azam ofcourse was a potent symbol of the Mughal Zenith for Muslims ...

As for the belief that RSS=Nazi, because they have some approving quotations about Hitler in the 30s. I have bad news for you: in the 30s people like Hitler were widely admired throughout the world by many people. It was the combination of economic advance of german people, standing upto the british power that was part of it. Racism was also not considered the sin it is considered today. It was only after Hitlers invasion of Poland and his subsequent mass-murder of jews and gipsies that there was mass revulsion against him.

But why bother about these subtleties? You admire a mass murderer like Stalin and offer him pooja day and night TODAY in 2006. You admire a killer like Mao today in 2006. But being a hypocrite, you feel it OK to criticize other organizations backwardness.

Hitler’s Mutual Admiration Society

During his campaign, California’s governor-elect, Arnold Schwarzenegger, got himself into hot water with his praise of Adolf Hitler’s oratorical skills. Maybe he should have reminded people of a dark secret that went down the public-school memory hole long ago, for obvious reasons: the mutual admiration society that existed between Hitler and other Western leaders during the 1930s.

In his book Adolf Hitler, John Toland points out,

Churchill had once paid a grudging compliment to the Führer in a letter to the Times: “I have always said that I hoped if Great Britain were beaten in a war we should find a Hitler who would lead us back to our rightful place among nations.”

In his book The Rise and Fall of the Third Reich, William L. Shirer wrote,

A foreigner, no matter how anti-Nazi, could come to Germany [from 1933 to 1937] and see and study what he liked — with the exception of the concentration camps and, as in all countries, the military installations. And many did. And many returned who if they were not converted were at least rendered tolerant of the “new Germany” and believed that they had seen, as they said, “positive achievements.” Even a man as perspicacious as Lloyd George, who had led England to victory over Germany in 1918, and who in that year had campaigned with an election slogan of “Hang the Kaiser,” could visit Hitler at Obersalzberg in 1936 and go away enchanted with the Fuehrer and praise him publicly as “a great man” who had the vision and the will to solve a modern nation’s social problems — above all, unemployment.

A reminder of this dark secret recently surfaced on the Internet in the form of a nice review of Hitler’s mountaintop home, published as late as 1938 by a prominent British magazine named Homes & Gardens.

So why were people so enamored with Hitler? The major reason is that the 1930s were the period when capitalist countries were abandoning the philosophy of the free market and adopting the same socialist and interventionist economic policies that Hitler and his fellow socialists embraced.
