have you ever seen a lahore publication bothering to write about karachi ?? cosmopolitan to lahore hai jisskay aik weekly nay aapka article araam say publish kar diya ...aur article bhi kaisa....sirf venom.....can you imagine a karachi publication printing such an article about karachi .....?? yeh allagg baat hai kay no lahori is going to be bothered to write one....

bibi....compare karachi with faisalabad....or multan.....not lahore.....

ab hamara kya kasoor hai kay whatever you karachiites do and however wanna be your city is.....you end up being tacky .....

inferiority complex ka illaaj to tabhi ho ga if you come to terms with yourself na......vaisay i do admit kay yeh mushkil hai.....i mean if i was a karachiite...it would be very difficult to come to terms with that fact.....

aur yeh kya kay in karachi when we go to a restaurant we go only to eat ?? hain ? jhoot ??? to phir itnay zamzama pay pretentious restaurant kioon khol rahay hain ?? vaisay hamaray gharon main to lahore main khuda ka shukar hai kay choolha jalta hai aur roti pakti hai....iss liyay we go to restaurants to have fun......and yes....zouking is culture......aapko culture ka pata ho tab aap samjhain na.....

aur bibi....people didnt let you pay here ?? itni aap independent modern hain to how could anyone have stopped you from it ? aap daina hi nahin chahti theen paisay......asal baat yeh hai....warna baichaaray lahori mard kahan aap ko roak saktay thay......

I fear that Shandana`s article belies exactly the sort of attitude she seems to criticize. Pakistanis are plagued by a `culture of superiority,` or also known as Hubris for the more literarily inclined. Does doing others down really make us feel better? I hope writing such articles doesn`t give the author the idea that she is any better then those status conscious Lahoris standing in line at Zouk. Hopefully I am wrong, but was I the only one who sensed a condescending tone in the article. Or is that mistaken for witty sarcasm these days? just a thought.

I just read Shandana`s article on Lahore and have read some of the responses too. A born and bred Karachiite who has visited Lahore twice in a twenty something existence, I could never have captured the dichotomy as succinctly as the author just did.

kudos

well, i doubt if the author is massively biased against Punjabis, seeing as she is Punjabi herself. I think people who read it, had a good laugh, then moved on, probably got the most out of the article (essay?). Everyone else who had a hissy fit about it... chill out, nothing is sacrosanct. It`s easy to confuse derisison with disloyalty but they`re not the same things. Let the air out otherwise there is a great danger of an explosion. Try not to take yourselves (and life in general) too seriously. It`s all good, man, it`s all good.

Okay this article may try to be funny but given the seething hatred
and violence that exists between different racial groups I don`t think it
helps.

There seems to be growing hatred against Punjabis in Karachi
and this article reflects that.

What next ? A Lahore resident writes a similiar article about the
people of Karachi, we exchange insults in the readers reply section
and soon Chowk represents a little of Pakistan.

A also note that the author is absent from the replies section.

Farouq Taj.

This was a stomach aching, eye wetting and breath chokingly hilarious riot of opinions to a very funny, not to mention `naughty` and deliberately provocative, piece. I enjoyed following it a hell of a lot. The only other thing that comes close is the fire storm of criticism and abuse generated in response to Asim Hyat`s article where he told us what a horrid time he had at Aitchison. The suitors of La`whore, it seems, are more protective of her `honor`, than the Aitchisonian aliens are of their mother ship.

(…``Lakshmi Chowk`` in Lahore... Wow. does Lahore still retain hindu names for streets and buildings.. Surprising to hear ....do fill me in on such information if there are more…)

1) Ganga Ram Hospital
2) Lakshmi mansion flats
3) Krishan Nagar
4) Ram Gali, Rang Mahal
5) Ferozpur Road
6) Ambala House (?)
7) Anarkali bazar (?)
8) Gandhi Gardens (Karachi)

Some of these names have been `changed`, but everyone still knows these places by their original names.

Just read all the replies... the article, i thought, was quite hilarious; the responses, even more side-splitting. A casual read shows the piece to be a tongue-in-cheek reaction to a city rather than a chest-thumping Karachi V. Lahore slanging match. Most people read it as such, some people... well, I don`t think I need to expand on that.

Anyhow, even though she hasn`t been responding, the very beautiful Shandana has been following the debate closely, shaking her head in dismay on occasion, chuckling on others. All I can say to Dr. Butler is... ``eat your heart out.``

Wow, Shandana`s some package, then. All that and brains, too. Most impressive. What is it they say, Allah deta hai to khoob deta hai ...

dL:

The fiances/boyfriends of this world have nothing to fear. I was just referring to women other than my wife ;-).

temporal:

Bhai kya naqsha khaincha hai transatlantic barat aur on-board discussion ka, bohut khoob. How about a `sehra` from you on this memorable occasion for Shandana and her to-be ?
